Who's the backup QB in KC?
Chiefs left tackle Willie Roaf retires
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2532615 By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com Eleven-time Pro Bowl performer Willie Roaf, one of the NFL's premier left tackles during his 13-year career, has apprised Kansas City Chiefs officials that he is retiring. Roaf did not go to training camp with the rest of the Chiefs players, and Kansas City officials said his absence was for personal reasons, but that they expected him to report within a few days. But a team source said Friday afternoon that Roaf, who has flirted with retirement each of the last two offseasons, told Chiefs officials that he is ending his celebrated career. "I guess they want me to reconsider," Roaf told the Kansas City Star. "[But] I'm solid on retiring and going back to school." Team officials have been able in the past to dissuade Roaf from walking away from the game, but their efforts apparently were not persuasive enough this time. Earlier this offseason, amid what have become near-annual reports of his pending retirement, Roaf insisted that he would play another season. But the 36-year-old Roaf has suffered through hamstring and knee problems the past few seasons, and that likely contributed to his decision. Roaf missed six games in 2005 with a strained hamstring. The departure of Roaf leaves the Chiefs without a proven left tackle and, with camps opening around the league, there are no quality replacements in the free agent pool. Third-year veteran Jordan Black, who played left tackle in Roaf's absence last season, will likely get the first shot at the starting job. Kansas City signed former New Orleans and St. Louis lineman Kyle Turley, who hasn't played in two seasons because of back problems, and he is expected to win the starting right tackle job. A first-round draft pick of the Saints in 1993, Roaf was traded to Kansas City in 2002. He has played in 189 games, all starts, and went to the Pro Bowl in all but two seasons. The former Louisiana Tech standout was one of the most dominant left tackles of his era, combining strength, quickness and technique to carve out a celebrated career. |

It seems to be a dickhead thing to do to wait that long to retire, and not allow your team to acquire a LT when there were actually ones available in FA/the draft.

Reportedly, he has been telling the Chiefs for 2 years that he wanted to retire and go back to school. Each time the Chiefs have been able to convince him that he should continue to play. It has even been reported that the Chiefs think he still may come back during the season. If these reports are to be believed, they have had plenty of advance warning that he was leaving.

Of course this could also be a plan to skip training camp all together and come back just in time to start the first game of the season.

I say trade him for Pat Swilling.
(Then you can play Swilling in coverage and not have him rush the passer!) |

Judging by your attitude alone, I'd say you were a 6'3", 250-pound linebacker out of Georgia Tech. Seriously, if I didn't know better, I'd think the Saints took you in the third round of the 1986 draft because they knew you'd improve their pass rush on the outside and complement little big man Sam Mills. Not so fast, touchdown. I do know better.

Hold it, I thought Turley converted to a much lighter TE because of his bad back? Has he suddenly put all of that weight back on now?

Yeah, he was supposedly eating enough cheeseburgers to get into that 280 range. I think he just ran out of money or something to that effect.

I'll be honest, I had to think for a second before I could remember who the Chiefs STARTING qb was.

Even with FOF, you know before the draft and FA period (though I would much prefer a chance to know a year before). ![]()

Joe Montana is probably who I still think of when i hear "Chiefs QB." Even if he only played there 2 seasons.

dola.
I suppose it is the Chiefs fault for only going after one OLineman in the draft when they had a pretty old line. Supposedly their backups are decent, who knows. |

Turley is penciled in at right tackle. Jordan Black has been working with the first team at left tackle during the off season since Roaf hasn't been with the team. Roaf considered retirement after last season, but told the team in the spring he was coming back. He apparently told them a month or so ago he was going to retire, but the Chiefs are all acting like this is just a ploy to sit out training camp. Peterson has made it clear he can come back anytime he wants.
Black got beat a lot last year filling in for Roaf and the offense struggled. It remains to be seen if he can come close to filling Roaf's shoes. |

As a Bengals fan and a big fan of a shift to the 3-4 defense, I'm liking these reports out of KC, the more the line falls apart the easier it will be to walk out of their 1-0 on the season.

Dream on. Aside from Chad Johnson, I think every single critical member of the Bengals will be injured (Palmer) or in prison (rest of team).

Having seen Huard play, I can't imagine why anyone would think Huard could come in and salvage the season if Green went down. Right now, I'd kick Huard to the curb and put Printers No. 2 and Coyle No. 3. I don't think they can carry four quarterbacks, and I don't either Printers or Coyle would clear waivers to put them on the practice squad. |

Everything that I've heard from camp says that Croyle is the best young QB on the Chiefs roster right now. Printers has struggled with the offense, but has a ton of athletic ability. I would not be surprised to see Croyle at #3. I don't know what the Chiefs will do with Printers at this time.
How can football fans not know who Trent Green is? Doesn't anybody play fantasy football or watch the pro bowl? The guy has only thrown for 4,000 yards in each of the last three seasons. Willie Roaf missed a good portion of the schedule last season and Trent Green ran for his life. I suspect it will be much the same this year. I think you'll see the Chiefs passing offense dialed down and loads of Larry Johnson. If you're a fantasy football GM...pick Larry Johnson. |

Daunte Culpepper played in Minnesota. Ever heard of him? If you're any kind of NFL fan you should know who Trent Green is. It's not as if he hasn't been elected to the Pro Bowl or led one of the most productive offenses in the NFL the last three years. I'm not saying you need to know all his stats or his favorite color, but at least recognize the name. Quote:
Amen Izulde. He's been the QB of some of my best fantasy football teams. |
