IWS #31 RESULTS ADDED
FINALLY, I have won I'm with stupid. Took long enough. Masked has been gracious enough to let me take the reigns, and I am selfish enough to do just that. I will take entries via PM as explained below. I would prefer not to use email, but if someone cannot PM me for some reason, post to this thread and I'll make sure I get your entry one way or another. Deadline is the day before Valentine's day. Make IWS your valentine to yourself. Questions are below the cut&paste rules. I have tried to get a little more old school with the questions so as to get back some people that we have lost. Like everyone, I'd love to have high turnout--but for once, it is out of my control. Do me proud, boys.

The object of this contest is to answer the questions posted below, and to provide the most common answer among those submitted. For each question, your score will be equal to the number of people who submitted that response. Your score for the contest will be the product of your individual question scores. Highest score wins. Send your entries by private message to me, albionmoonlight, via PM on the FOFC board. If I run out of space on my private message system, only those actually received will be considered. When I post bumps, I will post the people from whom I have entries so you can make sure that I have received yours. Entries must be submitted by 7:00 PM (EST) on February 13, 2003. There arent many rules or clarifications necessary, but here are those I can think of: No collaborating in any way. No posting your answers to this board, nor sharing them by email or in any other way with other potential contestants. All determinations of matchesEand anything else requiring judgment fall to the sole administrator of this puzzle. There will be no appeals or contesting of the results Ethe single judges decisions are final. You can, however, reduce the need for doubt and judgment on my part by properly spelling your submissions, being clear, that sort of thing. Anything that gives me clear and precise knowledge of how to determine whether your answer is the same as another answer is very helpful both to me and to you. (Answering Cincinnati BengalsEis probably clearer than answering Cincinnati,Efor instance) However...Your answers do not necessarily have to be correct in order to score points. If I ask name a color of the rainbowEand you and four other people responded blackE- you get five points, period, even if it is not technically a correct answer to the question. The winner of this contest will become the host of the next "I'm With StupidEContest. If he chooses not to host the contest, the next highest placing participant who wishes to host may do so. In the event of a tie, one winner will moderate, and all winners will have the option to contribute questions. The winner(s), of course, also retain the right to have their screen names published as past winners of the contest for all future versions. And that's nothing to sneeze at, I'll tell you. A link to IWS of days past can be found here. And the answers to IWS #30 can be found here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IWS 31 Questions 1.) Name a Prime Number. 2.) Name an item typically found at a wedding. 3.) Name a major hotel chain. 4.) Name a really bad NFL team that is not the Bengals. 5.) Name an office supply. 6.) Name something that married men normally possess but that bachelors normally do not possess. Last edited by albionmoonlight : 02-13-2003 at 07:23 PM. |

Now that our managers are keeping track of the incoming entries, maybe that will reinforce (or perhaps dispel) my belief that we have gained practically nothing by extending the entry period from a day or two to six or seven days. I think a day or two on the board is plenty of time for the interested partiipants to get in. Give much longer, and you just have people putting off their entry (especially if there's "work" involved). I think we could be doing two of these a week, rather than one every 7-10 days.
My two cents. |

I posted Feb. 13th as the deadline date, and because I really don't like changing rules in the middle of games, I will hold to that deadline. Based on the timing of the entries, however, I think that future IWS should run on a tighter time frame. Newbie administrator mistake on my part. When I post the results of this IWS, I will ask people to comment on what they think a good turnaround time would be (no sense in putting it in this thread because not everyone is going to read it after they put in an entry.) Meanwhile, 2 new entries . . . Bump. 2 More entries.
The deadline is tonight at 7 (EST). I've computed about 1/2 so far. I'll do the rest when I get home from work tonight. One caveat, however. My fiancee is coming into town tonight, so depending on when she arrives, I may need to finish it tomorrow at lunch. On the plus side, we have gotten a lot of entries. On the down side, the winner will probably be dead by the time he is announced. Waiting for me?
I'm game as always! Work and close to no internet time at home make it difficult to keep up with my "internet friends". Next time I'll be around, chances are I'm a year older then I am today., My entry will be up shortly...

Results
Here are the results.
1.) NAME A PRIME NUMBER 2--12 3--8 7--5 1--5 11-2 31-1 I remember from High School that 1 is NOT a prime number. No one, however, was able to give me a good explination as to why. It seems pretty arbitrary to me. Are there bad things that happen at a high level (i.e. to prime number theory, etc.) if we let 1 be a prime number? I must admit that part of the reason I chose this question was to see how many people would put 1. I figured that it would be between 2 and 3, and I was right. 2.) NAME AN ITEM TYPICALLY FOUND AT A WEDDING. cake-20 ring-9 bride-2 dress-1 bucket-1 In case you can't tell, I am getting married soon, so it'd on my mind. I would have bombed this question. I would have put flowers. I am suprised that there was such a consensus on this question. I think if not for question 6, we may have had even less people put ring. 3.) NAME A MAJOR HOTEL CHAIN Holiday Inn--14 Hilton--7 Marriott--2 Motel 6--2 Hyatt--2 Motel 8--1 Golden Tulip--1 Best Western--1 Ramada--1 I would have put Holiday Inn, too. I don't know why, but itwas the first to come to mind (well, that and Golden Tulip ). Oh, and I did not know if Motel 8 was distinct from Motel 6, so I kept them separate. 4.) NAME A REALLY BAD NFL TEAM THAT IS NOT THE BENGALS Detroit--17 Arizona--5 Dallas--4 Carolina--3 Houston--2 Washington--1 The Bengals--1 Good choices all. I would have put Arizona, but I may be underestimating Matt Millen and his ability to run a football team into the ground. A special shout-out goes to Alf who simply could not resist putting the Bengals--they just suck that much. 5.) NAME AN OFFICE SUPPLY stapler--11 pen--9 paper--7 staples--5 paper clips--1 I like to think that Office Space had something to do with the answers here. 6.) NAME SOMETHING THAT MARRIED MEN NORMALLY POSSESS BUT THAT BACHELORS NORMALLY DO NOT POSSESS. ring--20 wife--8 children--1 clean laundry--1 children--1 beer belly--1 mortgage--1 {Billy Idol Voice} . . . cars, CD players, even women are possessions to him . . .{/Billy Idol Voice}. Apparently to a lot of us, too. I would have bombed this one, too. I would have put minivan. This was actually designed to have a mirror question that would have asked what bachleors possess that married men do not, but I figured that everyone would put porn and that would be no fun. THE RESULTS Masked shares his second IWS title in a row. COngrats to Masked and Sterlingice!!! You both know the drill. PM among yourselves to see who does what. Before you do IWS32, however, you may want to see how people feel about shortening the IWS window. People--propose your thoughts here. Should it be shorter? Should it stay ~1 week? My 2c is that it should be shorter, but people should be aware that a lot of us cannot get to a computer over the weekend. THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED. It's been fun. A prime number is defined as a number with exactly two factors, one and itself. One doesn't fit that definition. It mostly comes into play in number theory when we try to write numbers as a unique string of primes. If 1 was a prime number, that would not be possible. (I am bordering between what I tell my sixth graders and a more detailed explanation. I usually just tell them to remember that one isn't a prime number and they will answer that question right more frequently than students in calculus.) By the way, I love the beer belly answer to the bachelor question, who was responsible for that? Last edited by panerd : 02-13-2003 at 08:23 PM. |

Well, I'm going back to my MIJB strategy that got me my big doughnut with the IWS "make mine rare" geography edition. I'm still proud of those 1s across the board. Actually trying this time sure didn't get me anywhere.
Looks like a phone call to the Mrs. to rub her next to last place in. What a V-day gift! ![]() |

Come on, we only get the minivans _after_ having kids....and then it's mainly because of the damn car seats. As for the porn.....well, that might make an interesting poll question..... |

MIJB#31, I didn't think you could have outdone yourself but this one takes the cake (or bucket as it may be). That's really impressive. Methinks it would be good to learn from the other submissions to get a pattern?

hey, it was a typo.
I was aiming for a handfull of flowers, but ended up with a water carrier. I thought I had a good group of questions, though I PM'ed Albionmoonlight I was not aiming for a last place... 31 - IWS31? bucket - call it a typo, I was aiming for flowers (though flowers would be a big fat 1 as well.) Golden Tulip - I couldn't come up with another hotel at the moment. Houston - well duh? paper - duh! beer belly - okay, so I was joking around as well. BTW, for those who care, it's MIJB#almost22. In fact, at the local volleyball club, I am #22 now. EDIT: my (Euro logo?)0.019 - I personally fear I don't have the time to bump in every two days to reply, though I've been a loyal IWS particpiant and, honestly, not to end up last time after time. I'm really trying hard time after time to end at the top, not at the bottom. Googling answers didn't help in the past. FWIW, the only reason I visited FOFC the last 2 months has been for competing in IWSes.
