Holy Crap!
I'm moving to Germany next week and bringing the family dog. But the dog can't go until the heat restriction is lifted in September. And because it's an 80lb lab, the costs are apparently astronomical.
$1500 for the dog's one way ticket. I think the airlines have me confused with somebody who makes a crap load of money. (Telling the wife it would be cheaper to drop the dog off in the woods and get a new one in Germany didn't go over so well, I suggest nobody else try that problem solving technique.) $1500? The bitch better get a 1st class seat for that. |

I would put it up for adoption at that rate. That's just insane.

Is leaving it temporarily with relatives an option?

Dress the dog up in a tee-shirt and jeans, tell the airline that the dog is your child and has "special needs," and then buy a regular ticket for the dog. They won't dare question you.

Anybody know if it is against the law to impersonate a blind person? You could let it pose as your leader dog, but make sure it is the only one panting at the flight attendants.

We moved a lab from the Phillippines to Tanzania to the US - All 105 lbs of him.
If we hadn't taken him, we would have had to leave my sister behind in those places. |

Well, my wife insists on paying the $1500. I would feel bad to put the dog up for adoption, but I also know I will feel bad to spend $1500 to transport the dog. But those are the breaks.

I didn't remember the term, but I'm glad you brought it up. I love that there is a term for this. You wouldn't think there would be a need for it, but I guess there is. |

How much does it cost to fly to German for you? If it costs $600 to fly to Memphis from Kansas City, I would blink at $1,500 to German for just a person.
Of course, if it weren't cost-prohibitive for pets to fly, every moron with way too much physical connection to their dog would be flying cross country with their frickin' dog, making airline travel just that much more annoying for those of us who are not terrorists and/or do stupid shit that slows down the process for the rest of us, like trying to smuggle a pair of nail clippers in their carry on. |

I think making 2-way tickets more expensive than 1-way tickets would solve the problem for you. I'm moving to Germany, not going on vacation. |

Do you not have a similar cost also for quarantine? I'd be surprised if Germany doesn't require you to keep the dog in quarantine for a few months.

The wife and I adopted a puppy from the pound back in the end of May. We've had him for just over two months now. If someone said the only way we could keep was to pay $1,500, I'd do it without batting an eye. Still, $1,500 is not chump change.
