NHL Ping: Bure, Fedorov, Mogilny .. Memories? *Malkin Injured In Debut*

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2547782

MOSCOW -- Evgeni Malkin, the Pittsburgh Penguins' No. 1 pick in 2004, has fled from his Russian club Metallurg Magnitogorsk days after agreeing on a new contract, local media reported Saturday.

News agency Itar-Tass, citing a source within the club, reported that Malkin had disappeared from Metallurg's training camp in Finland.

"Malkin secretly left the club, taking his belongings and his passport," the source said. Metallurg officials were not immediately available for comment.

Earlier this week, Metallurg said that Malkin had annulled his previous contract with the club, which would have kept him in Magnitogorsk through April 2008. Instead, he had signed a new one-year deal after which he would become a free agent.

The Russian, who turned 20 two weeks ago, has always stated his desire to play in the NHL, saying he wanted to prove himself at a higher level.

Malkin's sudden disappearance was reminiscent of that of another gifted 20-year-old, Alexander Mogilny, who defected to the United States at the 1989 world championships in Sweden. During an All-Star career in the NHL, Mogilny won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2000.

Pittsburgh drafted Malkin second overall in 2004 behind fellow Russian Alexander Ovechkin, who took the NHL by storm last season winning the Calder Trophy as the best rookie.

Metallurg, however, had no intention of releasing their most prized asset after Russia refused to sign a transfer agreement with the NHL earlier this month.

Under the agreement Magnitogorsk would have received a basic $200,000 fee for Malkin, whereas the Russian club wanted at least 10 times more.

It's gonna be a sticky situation when Malkin gets here. Expect some drama.

And this article suggests that Malkin was "pressured" into re-signing that one year deal with Metallurg.

The more things change...

Reminds me of the Zherdev situation from a couple seasons ago, where Z's agent, with the help of the Jackets, basically snuck Nik out of Russia and over to Columbus. Hope it doesn't have to resort to that for Malkin.

Now if only Z would get his contract situation worked out....

Does anyone know if he actually gave his two week notice to quit the team?

not for nothing but if this guy is as good as everyone says he is then how is he only worth $200K to his former team?

Mainly because even the scrubs that come to the NHL are also worth $200K to the former team. Those are the rules as negotiated by the IAHF.

A more extensive article from the Moscow Times...
http://www.moscowtimes.ru/stories/2006/08/18/002.html

Kharchuk said his club had spent roughly $2 million to train Ovechkin, who left Russia last year after having played for Dynamo Moscow for a little more than three years. "We should have an agreement like they have in football," he said, "where a club names its price for a player when another club is interested in that player. We are losing huge amounts of money."
...
When Malkin does emerge from hiding and, presumably, joins the Penguins, Federal Sports Agency chief Vyacheslav Fetisov, a former NHL great, made it clear he thought the team should pay. What does he think the hockey player is worth? "For a guy like Malkin," Fetisov said at a meeting Thursday with reporters, "$20 million is appropriate."

Malkin's side of the story. You've got to feel for the kid. The Russian Super League sounds less credible every day. Let's hope his parents are indeed safe.
