Yet Another ESPN Sucks Thread
Front page story of "Why does everyone hate Arod". Huh? I don't think people in, say, Denver or Houston or Miami even give a flip about Arod. A lot of "good player" maybe a little "pretty boy" or "spoiled contract guy". It's going to be only natural to get a little backlash about having the biggest contract ever and by such a large margin. But everybody hates him? Hell, he doesn't even get the "biggest pretty boy" award or "most overhyped player" on his own team. Even their own graphic says it isn't at all true. 22% don't like him? That's nothing- oh that the President was that hated. Yet another "ESPN needs to get off the effing east coast" story...

Wasn't this the cover story on ESPN.com about a week ago? I thought my browser wasn't refreshing properly or something.

You forget that, in the national media, "Everybody" is New York and LA.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw that. I hadn't realized that A-Rod was reviled by the entire nation...

I hate him. So that should take care of the midwest.

They employ Skip Bayless, Woody Page, Steven A. Smith, and the collection of gasbags on Baseball tonight (Steve Phillips, Jeff Brantley especially).
ESPN is built to suck |

Baseball is New York and Boston.....Football is the Patriots and the Colts.
That sums up the current sports. I'm amazed how few teams have been on ESPN Sunday night baseball this year in addition to the fact that the sports world to ESPN simply doesn't exist outside of the northeast. Radio is a little better in my opinion and I like some of the guys there. I'm amazed no other station (FOX) has been able to really replace these guys for the majority of the country. |

To be fair, ESPN has shown a lot of the White Sox this year, and at the beginning of the season, they were showing quite a few Indians games. But I agree that they do focus way too much on the Yanks and Red Sox. When you talk about Fox, are you talking about the national broadcasts or the regional channels? I think the national Fox broadcasts are even worse than ESPN. They always show either the Yanks or Red Sox on their Saturday game. And for the article that started this whole thread, while I think it's fair to say that "everyone hates A-Rod" is a stretch, it is probably true that he is the most disliked player in baseball not named Barry Bonds. |

I'm not sure how much in advance the schedule is setup to be honest. I'm guessing it's setup for the whole year but perhaps ESPN should look at setting things by the month. The fact Detroit hasn't been on Sunday night (at all?) is amazing to me. There are just so many teams I don't get to see. Since switching to High Def, I do get a channel called InHD (I'm guessing it's everywhere) that gives me some teams I normally might not see. As far as Fox, I was talking more like the Fox Sports Channel and their terrible effort at a nightly recap show ala Sportscenter. I remember when CNN had a nightly sports telecast as well. Just wish there was some competition to ESPN. |

Seriously? I would think Clemens comes in at a good pace ahead of him as an easy second to Barry. Or how about Manny for his crybaby and non-caring attitude? Johnny Damon and his book where he shows that he's a complete and utter ass and revels in it? Giambi, after his little bout with 'roids, tho maybe not as much any more. After the playoffs, I'd think Pierzynski is now nationally known as an asshat instead of locally. Schilling as a blowhard, Glavine and Maddux as smug guys who got tons of beneficial calls, Pedro as an ass, etc- the list goes on. ARod just doesn't have the a-hole factor. He's just got the overrated stigma. Like, say, Kerry Wood or, hell, I'd bet if you polled outside of New York, you'd find more people hate Jeter than ARod. SI

Its getting pretty tough to get objective journalism these days with regards to sports. You're almost better off going to MLB.com and making your own judgements.

I don't know that I can speak for most people, but I've never thought of Maddux as smug -- he has always been one of my favorite players. And now he has to pitch for the f***ing Dodgers. Gah.

I'm the same way- I love watching him pitch. But he's a quiet guy and I've heard some people describe him as smug or arrogant SI

I would love for someone to prove me wrong, because I too have heard people say that, but I think it's more of a case of "He's really good, so I have to find something not to like about him." I think he's one of the three best pitchers I've ever seen pitch (Clemens, Pedro).

Even if he was smug (which I don't think he is), I'd rather have a superstar be smug than an outright jackass (see Pedro Martinez)
