Randy Lerner

Anyone have an opinion on him? Has he had any beneficial effect on the Browns franchise?

Lerner has just bought Premiership club Aston Villa and my brother is a Villa fan. I have assured him he is not the second coming of Malcolm Glazer but I know next to nothing about him other than he once owned the MBNA Credit Co. Any thoughts?

I know the reincarnation has stunk but to what degree is Lerner responsible?

How bad can it be? Villa were on the road to nowhere anyway, being biggest club in Birmingham was as high as they aimed.

Martin O'Neill seems to like Lerner, talking about signing an extended contract already. So I'd guess Lerner is planning on splashing the cash.

I'm not sure how much he had to do with the Browns while his father was still alive but he at least made a couple good choices recently(Crennell and Savage)

But wasn't he the one who gave Botch Davis an extension

Looks like it's not definite now, there's been a rival bid put in that's higher than Lerner's. The new bid is from a group of local businessmen and Sven Goran Erickson's agent.

Lerner's made a public commitment to O'Neill of a long term contract extension, which can only be good. Villa have stagnated under Ellis since 2000 or so when John Gregory was still manager, so someone willing to spend some cash can only be a good thing.

Of course, it was Gregory and some of his awful, awful purchases (Bosko)that led to the lack of funds to begin with, but those are details.

I'd like to think that Lerner is smart enough to not jeopardise the club in a Leeds like fashion in a far-fetched effort to win a major trophy.
