Nutt Elevates Johnson, Leaves Dick Behind

Just continuing the fun from last year...

Arkansas names QB Johnson starter, ends controversy

Associated Press

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Robert Johnson is getting another chance to start at quarterback for Arkansas.

Johnson, benched midway through last season when the Razorbacks needed a spark, was named the starter for 2006 on Wednesday night. Coach Houston Nutt's announcement ended -- for now -- a three-way competition between Johnson, Casey Dick and prized freshman Mitch Mustain.
"We have named Robert Johnson the starting quarterback," Nutt said. "Robert has improved greatly and we want everybody to get behind him. Our team is excited."

Johnson started the first seven games of 2005 as a sophomore, but Arkansas started 2-5. Dick, a freshman, had his redshirt removed for the last four games. The Razorbacks finished 4-7, their second straight losing season.
Dick threw for 584 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions in 2005, and Johnson threw for 876 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions.
Johnson's prospects for this season appeared dim at first. Dick had shown potential, and Mustain, the heralded in-state recruit from Springdale High School, was on his way.
But Johnson played well during spring practice, and his improvement continued in the fall. Also, Arkansas overhauled its offense in the offseason, bringing in Gus Malzahn -- Mustain's coach at Springdale -- to become offensive coordinator and hiring Alex Wood as quarterbacks coach.
"It gave each one of us a fresh start, come in and learn a new offense," Johnson said.
Meanwhile, Dick has been bothered by a back injury that has caused him to miss some practice time.
"Right now, we are working with two quarterbacks," Nutt said. "I feel for Casey Dick. He has been through a lot and he's very frustrated. This is not what we planned."
Nutt said Dick wouldn't be ready for Arkansas' opener Sept. 2 against Southern California, and the team needs to move forward with a clear No. 1 quarterback. He hopes Johnson will be helped by having more experience than at this time last year.
"Robert Johnson is a little older and I think he is much better now then he was a year ago," Nutt said. "We are going to keep him going and hopefully our team will keep improving."
Mustain, who threw for 3,817 yards and 47 touchdowns at Springdale last year, had talked about trying to win the starting job, but he insisted all along he shouldn't be considered a savior.
Mustain didn't appear bothered by Wednesday's decision.
"That's something to be expected," he said. "I've still got a lot to learn."

Dick is still being jerked around? Word on campus is that Johnson and Nutts cannot be separated.

Unless the 'Cocks are involved, it will never beat the timing of last year's Nutt yanking of Johnson and inserting of Dick.

Nutt may have needed Johnson when Dick went out, but it's clear Nutt still wants Dick:

"I feel for Casey Dick. He has been through a lot and he's very frustrated. This is not what we planned."

Let's hope there is a QB controversy around the beginning of November.

It's not our fault that Nutt can't decide which way he swings.

And suddenly I'm really, really glad I'm not in the QB competition for Arkansas.

I don't suppose we can have a guy named Richard in on this?

When you've got a real Dick, why would you need a dildo like Richard?

Don't know about you guys, but I'm interested in seeing Mustain, Tebow and Stafford all playing in the SEC in a couple years.

Don't know if it was overhype (or because I'm in the south) but it seems that these 3 are the next wave of NFL caliber quarterbacks?

By all accounts, Nutt is on the hot seat this season. And given that the Johnson/Dick saga will likely continue next year (unless mustain screws up our fun), I've obtained the Arkansas AD's hot list of potential candidates to replace Nutt after he blows his wad this season:

Darrell Dickey (UNT)
Rocky Long (NMU)
Paul Johnson (Navy)
Dick Tomey (SJSU)
Bobby Johnson (Vandy)
Al Groh (VA)
Sonny Lubick (CSU)

Should there be any other candidates considered?

Need I remind you all that Nutt, Dick and Johnson have to begin with... Trojans?

And theres possibly three of them in one place at LSU. Although all three still have a long way to go and a lot to prove.

I will be interested to see how Cox does this year. IMO, he was quite good last year, but he looks like a guy that may have a lower ceiling than other elite SEC QBs. We shall see.

I must admit since I read this earlier, I've been giggling at the notion of Hiscock under center, taking the snap and dropping back in the pocket.

There's some joke here about the Trojans not covering Johnson all the way or something about protection but I can't put my finger on it.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to put your finger on it?

Or even better, if Nutt gets canned and Bellotti replaces him:

Bellotti leaves OSU for Arkansas; trades Beavers for chance with Dick, Johnson
