Braves-Marlins game

Anyone see the home plate umpire is down in the Braves-Marlins game? The Marlins bat' broke when he was swinging towards his back, and nailed the ump right in his face/neck.

Good news..

MIAMI -- Umpire Jerry Layne returned to work Saturday night less than 24 hours after being injured and taken off the field on a stretcher.

Layne was injured during Friday night's game between Atlanta and Florida when the barrel of a shattered bat hit him in the side of the head. He suffered a bruised jaw, but X-rays were negative.

"I feel fine. I've been cleared to work by the doctor," Layne said an hour before he was scheduled to work at third base. "I get paid to work, I don't get paid to sit around."

Layne had a bruise on his left cheek that started just above his mouth and extended to just shy of his hairline. He said he also had "a couple of loose teeth."

The injury occurred in the eighth inning when Hanley Ramirez broke his bat grounding out to second base. The bat hit Layne in the left side of the head, and he staggered several steps before falling to the grass behind home plate.

He was briefly unconscious, Hudson said, but was talking and moving his arms before being loaded onto the stretcher.

Layne is in his 18th year in the major leagues.

Anyone know how much these MLB umpires get paid to work?

Professional umpires currently begin their Minor League career at $1,800 per month. At the Major League level, salaries range from approximately $84,000 to $300,000 per year.
