ESPN forced to put Little League World Series on 5 second delay

After a player swore and the coach smacked the player.

An incident at the Little League World Series on Sunday night involving a player swearing and a coach slapping the player has resulted in reprimands, apologies and a five-second delay for broadcasts of the event.

Little League officials on Monday reprimanded the manager and a player for the Staten Island, N.Y. team after the player was heard using an obscenity and the manager responded by slapping him.

In the middle of the sixth inning, just before a commercial break, a player for Staten Island used an obscenity while telling his teammates in the dugout that they needed just one run to tie the game. The Staten Island manager responded with a quick slap to the player.

Lemont defeated Staten Island, 1-0.

The manager and the player apologized Monday for their actions, and Little League officials have made them aware that a repeat violation could lead to a suspension.

In response to the matter, ESPN has decided to put its Little League World Series telecasts on a five-second delay beginning with Monday's 3 p.m. game on ESPN between Lake Charles, La., and Portsmouth, N.H.

Actually, the FCC can't fine em because they are cable (a fact that pisses off some commissioners and folks like the PTC).. it's more like self-censorship so the Moral Majority (who are neither) don't cry and hue for the Cable networks to be brought under the FCC laws.

Good thing pro athletes never swear on TV.

Actually, that's become the big cause celebre for some groups to force the broadcast networks to put their sporting events on 5-15 second delay, to catch swears from athletes and dump them before they make the air,

The little league world series is becoming a big joke - and we can thank ESPN for that. Do we really need to be showing every game that they play? What happened to ABC just showing the final game?

I watched a game today (NH vs LA) and it was a joke. The coaches seemed to know when the camera's were on them - and always had an emmy award winning speach ready for the players (in the bottom of the 3rd in a 0 0 game nonetheless).

Then in the 6th inning, the little shit pitcher from NH didn't get a borderline call and esentially showed up the ump by gesturing "where the hell was that pitch". I don't know about you guys - but when I played LL, that would have gotten me tossed, without delay. Of course the coach didn't walk out to the mound and teach the pitcher that was the wrong thing to do, he was throwing 75 afterall.

I actually applaud putting TV sports on a delay - I'd like to be able to watch a baseball or footbqall game with my 4-yesr-old and then not have her repeating curse words all afternoon.

In the same spirit, I wish *I* was on a delay sometimes.

These games are about 150x as entertaining as most MLB games. And when the alternative is showing the replay of the 2005 $1500 buy-in HE tournament, I'll take the little leaguers.

Here is an idea. Take all the mics out of the dugout, off the sidelines etc.

Then he probably doesn't even know its a "bad" word until everyone starts getting into a tizzy about it. And if he asks about it, its not that hard to explain that its not a word that little boys should use.

I want the mics in the dugout, sidelines, etc. In fact, I would like to see the NFL start a pay channel and show football games where they mic the field during the whole game. So instead of hearing the announcers babble on all game, you get to actually hear the players on the field uncensored. I think it would add so much more to the game if you could hear the players reacting to each other, the trash talking, etc. You'd have a choice between watching the game uncensored or watching on the regular channel and hearing the announcers instead.

Of course this would never fly, because the league doesn't want it to get out that occasionally players use foul language and say things that aren't nice.

I would agree with the entertaining part but there is something a little perverse about this coverage of 11 and 12 years olds.

Show the last 3 games and that's it.

I was sitting at home the other night when I noticed that the South Park movie was running on Comedy Central. I wasn't going to watch it because one of the funny things about that movie was seeing the kids cuss on the big screen and I assumed it would be toned down a bit. But comedy central played the movie in its entirety, completely uncut! I couldn't believe my ears.

Comedy Central probably aired it after 10-11 PM, when no one really gave a damn

I think it's 1am on Sunday morning when they usually play uncut stuff.
