Freshmen Roundup: 2004

Coach Purple plans on redshirting the entire class once again, for obvious reasons, depending on future injuries. The newcomers are, in order of their signings:
  • Cox, Mel, CB. He is currently rated at 33, with future estimate of 66.
  • Tamaarkin, Ross, G. He is currently rated at 27, with future estimate of 84.
  • Doyle, Jon, T. He is currently rated at 23, with future estimate of 83.
  • Britton, Scottie, P. He is currently rated at 17, with future estimate of 94.
  • Mahoney, Ralph, S. He is currently rated at 18, with future estimate of 63
  • Gustin, Irving, DE. He is currently rated at 21, with future estimate of 63.
  • Saffitz, Donald, S. He is currently rated at 22, with future estimate of 48.
  • Spillman, Ben, ILB. He is currently rated at 13, with future estimate of 73.
  • Norwood, Kim, CB. He is currently rated at 22, with future estimate of 74.
  • Pauly, Gino, WR. He is currently rated at 28, with future estimate of 86.
  • Washington, Marvin, OLB. He is currently rated at 22, with future estimate of 89.
  • White, Quinn, DT. He is currently rated at 18, with future estimate of 100.
  • Coppa, Cornell, QB. He is currently rated at 17, with future estimate of 69.
  • Ingram, Ike, DE. He is currently rated at 16, with future estimate of 51.
  • Capriglione, Skip, G. He is currently rated at 10, with future estimate of 86.
  • Coles, Jose, C. He is currently rated at 19, with future estimate of 81.
  • Sampson, Corwin, RB. He is currently rated at 18, with future estimate of 18.
  • Kau, Thomas, OLB. He is currently rated at 1, with future estimate of 2.
  • Wiebe, Adrian, TE. He is currently rated at 5, with future estimate of 5.
  • Oliver, Donnell, TE. He is currently rated at 3, with future estimate of 14.

Coach Purple had a coronary last year when he saw the player ratings. This year, he said "I expected a raw class, so I am not surprised, though one can hope for a bit of a lucky break every now and then. Unfortunately, we got none. These boys will be of no help at all this year."

In fact, some of these recruits will need two years to be of any help if we are able to give them that time. We are very thin at several positions, of course, so they may not have a choice here and there.

The future is definitely NOT now. We have too many starters that do not measure up to the real programs to be successful to any great extent.
We have one hope, and that hope is named Graham Elliot. For a postseason appearance to occur, Elliot cannot get hurt, and the O-line must come through.

Recruiting Outlook: 2004

As last year, we need anything we can get. We have enough scholarships to give another 16 this year, but if we do, we will be short of 16 next year. There are only 17 recruits from Texas in the top 200 with the requisite academic numbers for our program, and only 4 more from our 4 surrounding states. I think fourteen this year would be a better number to shoot for unless we find lots of interested players farther away. We need decent players, of course, but Coach Purple is here for the long haul, not the short term. We have many young players, which is good, but most have low rating estimates and will take 2 years to be good. We need to try for some higher AthPrep recruits.
  • Scholarships open: 18
  • Graduating Seniors: 12, 10 on scholarship
  • Travel Budget/Week: $2,702
  • Highest ranked Idolizer: None ranked
  • Highest rated Frog: RB Graham Elliot, Soph-63 current.
Recruiting Needs: 2004
  • QB- need to find better than the last two
  • RB- back-up to Elliot is graduating
  • FB- backup only
  • TE- need at least one, even a poor one, as has been the case
  • WR- have #s returning, but not quality
  • OL- not as pressing as past, but always a need
  • K/P- not a need
  • DL- needs are relative, not pressing
  • LB- need some players here
  • CB- have 2 redshirting frosh
  • S- have 2 redshirting frosh
Recruiting Priorities: 2004
  • [1] Quarterback- we are tired of starting QBs with ratings in 30s
[2] Tight End- short yardage plays have a 5 rated TE playing
[3] Linebackers- 2 youngsters at each spot, then shit
[4] O. Linemen- always need to upgrade

WEEK 1

The Game:
  • TCU (0-0)(-5) @ Notre Dame (0-0)
  • Attendance: 59,600
  • 72 degrees, Fair
  • First Meeting
Coach Purple gazed at the largest crowd to see a Horned Frog contest in his brief tenure knowing Amon Carter Stadium can't even hold this many fans at capacity. By the time the coach turned around to view the game, TCU was behind by 14 points. Sandwiched around an 8 play Frog drive that stalled on downs, Notre Dame scored on two 61 yard drives, one of 9 plays, another of 6.
The second quarter saw TCU regain its composure and tie the game. An 8 play, 71 yard drive was capped by Graham Elliot's first Toad TD. The Irish drove 47 yards in 11 plays, only to be stopped as TCU intercepted on their 32. Two plays later, Elliot scored again, this time on a 48 yard scamper, tying the score, 14-14, at the half.
The Horned Frogs took the second half kickoff to the first of 3 consecutive scores on yet another Elliot td, this time from 9 yards out. Notre Dame fumbled on their next drive and TCU scored quickly, in 2 plays, on a 34 yard reverse by J.T. Collier. This was followed by a 7 play, 61 yard drive capped by a Benjamin Galloway to Ellis Twisp td pass, and the game was over.
Coach Purple was quite pleased, saying "We were a bit off at first, what with all the Irish yelling and screaming, but that Elliot boy really gave them a show. A hint of the next four years, I am sure."

Final Score: TCU 42 Notre Dame 14

[-]Gabe Thompson, DT, TX. #155 nationally.
[-]Teddy Bridges, OLB, TX. #158 nationally.
[-]Al Lowery, ILB, TX. #543 nationally.

We concentrated on Texas boys this week, contacting all of the highest rated players in the state with qualifying academics in hopes they emphasize Academics or Distance. Palmer was the highest rated, highest academic QB on the list, so we gambled a call on him, and it looks good, as he is a high Academic emphasis player (though his scout score is low). We need Linebackers and Tight Ends badly, so we will reach as far down as is necessary to fill the holes.

WEEK 2

The Game:
  • TCU (1-0)(E) @ Auburn (0-0)
  • Attendance: 53,900
  • 71 degrees, Stormy
  • TCU leads series, 1-0
Coach Purple was confident entering the contest, though the game was rated an even match. A good week of practice, plus Graham Elliot, made him feel TCU could compete on a more equal footing with the better teams. This confidence seemed justified as the Frogs stormed out of the gate in the 1st quarter. The Horned Frogs nearly doubled the Tigers offensive output in the first half, compiling over 200 yards. However, mistakes seemed to continuously impede the Toads. First quarter drives of 56 and 85 yards got the game going, with Graham Elliot and Ellis Twisp scoring the tds on a 2 yard run and a 26 yard pass reception, respectively.
At this point, all looked great, but the mistakes soon began. After an inocuous Auburn field goal, QB Benjamin Galloway threw an interception that was returned to the TCU 22 and the Tigers scored on the next play for a 14-10 Frog halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Auburn moved 56 yards in 10 plays to bring the score to 14-13 on another 3-pointer. At this point, the Toad D took over and held Auburn down, continuously sacking Tiger qbs a total of 10 times for the game. A 7 play 63 yard drive capped by another Elliot td run with 2:47 left pushed the lead to 8. Auburn proceeded to move 49 yards in 10 plays in a bid to tie the game with a successful td and 2-point conversion, but CB Marco Giles made a clutch interception to thwart the chance, and the Frogs ran out the clock for a 2-0 start to the season.

Final Score: TCU 21 Auburn 13

Players of the Week: Congratulations

This week we looked at some need areas, especially TE, since we can't afford to be left hanging on signing day. We look at high academic players in terms of SAT and GPA. We also look at the other schools that have contacted them, focusing on any trend visible for the schools involved as a whole. The more schools interested, the more informarion we have to use our calls and visits wisely, though we do, of course, make mistakes each week.

WEEK 3: Skillet Time

The Game:
  • TCU (2-0)(-1) @ SMU (1-0)
  • Attendance: 16,000
  • 94 degrees, Scalding
  • TCU leads series, 2-0
Coach Purple was burning his ass off in the Texas sun, watching his team prepare for the fight for the Skillet, when he turned and saw injured CB Roy Martinez standing to the side with a cast on his wrist. "Any more of that and our bowl chances are in trouble. We have no depth to replace injuries with. Keep your fingers crossed." His fingers turned out to be needed for another job this sweltering afternoon. SMU fumbled 6 times, losing 2 of these, and were outgained 409 to 272 but were winning the game in the last minutes due to their 8 sacks of QB Benjamin Galloway and some timely breaks.
RB Graham Elliot scored on long runs of 58 and 69 yards to give the Frogs a lead of 17-6 going to the fourth. Pony pride came out then, however, and SMU went on 2 touchdown drives, scoring one 2-point conversion as well, to take a 21-17 lead with 1:38 left in the game.
A poor kick return caused TCU to start their drive at the 23 yard line, and all Frog fingers were suddenly crossed, hoping for a Skillet Miracle. After a draw for no gain, QB Galloway completed a 36 yarder to Ellis Twisp, then found J.T. Collier for another 27 yards. All of a sudden, the Toads were in business at the Mustang 14 yard line with 44 seconds to play. Two incomplete passes later, Benjamin Galloway found Darrin Gaynor in the end zone for the winning 14 yard td pass with 26 seconds to play and TCU had retained the Skillet for the 3rd straight year. RAH!RAH! TCU.

Final Score: Texas Christian 24 Southern Methodist 21

Players of the Week: Congratulations
RB Graham Elliot 27 carries for 225 yards, 2 td

  • [-]We have our first visit from T Norm Walker of TX. Norm is ranked #32 nationally and #5 OT.TCU is currently the only school he is visiting
[-]QB Ike Palmer from KS is visiting Maryland. However, his emphases are Acad* and Dist. TCU has better Acad, and Maryland is 3 times as far, so we still feel good about our chances.
[-]Neither of our top 2 TE have decided on any visits as of yet.

Excellent. Not only did we defeat the Ponies, but defeated The Great Satan. A bowl is deserved no matter how the rest of the season goes.

I agree, HF P. I would rather have beaten Texas, but they kept ducking my invite, so ND was next best thing.

Recruiting:

This week we focused on one of our MAJOR weaknesses, linebackers. We have contacted 6 OLB and 7 ILB that had good academic numbers because we always seem to have trouble landing linebackers, as other schools sometimes seem to have trouble landing a RB or a DT. 3 of these are from TX and one is from AR. 7 are top 100 recruits and 9 have no visits scheduled yet at all. One top 250 player idolizes UCLA but has as of yet not even had a contact with them, so we hope that bodes well for the Frogs. All have solid academics and all are top 1000 players. We would like to land 2 each of ILB and OLB because we have 5 linebackers returning in 2005, but only one of them is rated over 27 currently. We have our and Coach Purples' fingers crossed. We need to pull them in.

The Game:
  • Houston (1-1) (+7) @ TCU (3-0)
  • Attendance: 36,200
  • 90 degrees, Sunny
  • TCU leads series, 2-0
Coach Purple and the team couldn't help but spend the pregame time focused on the field as Pamela Anderson strolled out for the National Anthem. Few people realize she can sing (sort of) since noone is listening, anyway. Somehow, several dozen water baloons were flung at Pamela as she moved to the mic, drenching her Barbed Wire t-shirt and giving the Horned Frog coach and players something besides football to think about. What a GREAT time.
Of course, it often takes time to recover your eyesight (and senses) after staring for so long at one thing (or, in this case, 2 really, really BIG things), and the Frogs came out to play a little late. After the kickoff, TCU punted to the Cougs, who went on a 53 yard td drive. QB Benjamin Galloway threw an interception, and Houston scored again on a 59 yard drive to take a 14-0 lead. After a Vincent Boo field goal, the Toads got a lucky break as RB Graham Elliot fumbled the ball, but FB Gus Sidharta picked it up and rumbled 55 yards for a td to make the score 14-10 Houston at the half.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, TCU took control early in the 4th on a TD pass to WR Donnell Oliver. TCU salted the game away with 5:43 left on a 7 yard TD run by Elliot. After the victory, Coach Purple was quoted saying "Holy Moly, Batman. Those things are BIG."

Final Score: TCU 24 Houston 17

Recruiting:

We have two more recruits visiting this week:
  • [-]OLB Teddy Bridges from TX, #158 national recruit
[-]DE Louie England from TX, #55 national recruit
Due to QB Ike Ingram still not paying Ft. Worth any attention, we are now considering anotheroption at that position. We have talked to QB Trevor Branch of CO who is #199 national recruit with emphasis Acad*. We now have 12 linebackers and 4 TE contacted/considering. We see our defense give-up yards and points by the bushel each week, so we have decided to offer a 15th scholarship to make sure we get 2 of each linebacker slot and at least one of DE,DT,CB,S. Our defense needs upgrading- now.

Coach Purple said after the game his Frogs never seemed to be in the game, even with the tight score. Tulane had 10 more first downs, 100 more yards, as well as more sacks. The Green Wave took the opening kickoff on a 10 play, 70 yard drive to open the game. The Frogs responded with a drive of their own covering 62 yards in 11 plays to tie it up, 7-7. Tulane then tore the Toads up in the second quarter to take a 17-7 halftime lead.
In the 3rd, TCU came alive to tie it up at 17-17, but it was an illusion as the dreams of a perfect year vanished quickly in the 4th quarter. Turnovers ruined the day as Tulane scored 10 unanswered points to take a 27-17 lead. The Frogs ended the day valiantly, pushing in a td in the final minute but could not get the ball back to try for the tie or win, and Tulane ended TCU's hopes with the Wave win.
Coach Purple said afterwards, "We just cannot stop people from running the ball down our throats. With the negative sack yards, we were outgained 252-72 on the ground. That's no way to win a game. I guess, in a way, it's a miracle we were as close as we were."

[-]DT Gabe Thompson from TX, #155 national recruit
You gotta take the bad with the good. We received our first refusals this week and, unfortunately, one was a TE, #75 national recruit. The other was the #7 recruit, a G. This was a quiet week as we made a few second calls and visits to some top priority players. QB Ike Palmer is still only visiting Maryland, and QB Trevor Branch has visited Colorado, which is his home state. Since both are now iffy, we are expanding our QB efforts to the top TX QB, Tommie Reese from Beaumont, #69 nationally. His first emphasis is Distance, and we are easily the closest, so maybe...

The Game

President Jimmy Carter got the pre-game festivities under way at Amon Carter Stadium today with a poetic reading of the Star Spangled Banner. Another unfortunate byproduct of the Presidents visit was the large pile of peanut shells that accumulated on the field as he and daughter Amy shelled and ate throughout the rendition. It took quite some time to clean the field for play, but that was a precursor to the game itself, which lasted a bit longer than Coach Purple had hoped.
The game started on a sorry note as a fumble and an interception resulted in a 10-0 lead for the Blazers. After a Frog field goal, UAB scored again on a 77 yard drive. TCU finally broke into the end zone at the end of an 80 yard drive that took just 22 seconds, highlighted by 27, 17, and 19 yard pass completions and ending with a Graham Elliot TD run.
The third quarter was all Frogs, as the Blazers managed only 30 total yards and TCU had a 13 play, 78 yard TD drive taking up much of the time. Score tied, 17-17.
The Horned Frogs again went the distance to take the lead with 12:29 left in the game on a 78 yard drive. UAB was stoned again and punted to the Frog 4 yard line. TCU moved 86 yards in 15 plays but, with 1::08 left, K Vincent Boo missed the game clinching 27 yard field goal, and UAB was alive. They moved 80 yards in 1:01, completing a 47 yard pass on a 3rd and 10 to keep their hopes alive. With 0:07 on the game clock, the Blazers tied the score, 24-24, sending the game to OT.
TCU took the ball first and Elliot scored from 8 yards following a 17 yard pass to TE Darrin Gaynor. UAB tied it at 31-31, scoring on a 4th down pass.
UAB kicked a field goal on their 2nd OT possession, and TCU took over, or Graham Elliot took over. With runs of 10, 12 and 5 yards sandwiched around a delay of game penalty, Elliot ended the game on a 3 yard scamper, giving the Frogs the win.

The Game

Coach Purple was so upset over the days events, he held a team meeting for a few minutes after the game. When he finally emerged, all he said was "catch me on campus tomorrow," and left.
As for the outcome, the Frogs were down at halftime, 10-7, but Graham Elliot scored in the 3rd on a 31 yard run to put TCU ahead, 14-10.
With 12:39 left in the game, the Golden Eagles kicked a field goal to make it 14-13, Frogs. Unable to move, TCU went for a first on the USM 38 yard line. QB Bejamin Galloway hit WR Ellis Twisp in the hands, but the redshirt sophomore dropped the ball and S. Miss took over with 5:39 to go. Once more, the Toad "D" was toasted, as USM moved down the field, 50 yards in 12 plays. With 0:31 left in the game, the Golden Eagles kicked a 24 yard field goal to win the game, breaking the heart of TCU fans everywhere.

We had a boom and bust week in recruiting. We landed 3 outstanding recruits this week, 2 from the top 25, plus a much needed OLB rated #9 for position. We didn't lose any more QB to other schools, but we took a few on the chin, nontheless.
Choosing to matriculate elsewhere were TE Bernard Brock to Colorado, DT Erik Sims to Michigan State, and S Omar Pinto to Maryland. That sucks, but QB Ike Palmer has decided to give Ft. Worth a visit, along with 2 good TE prospects and 6 LB players. Overall, we have visits set up with 27 players.

We locked-up 2 more future Frogs this week and, thank goodness, they were both LB's, one of each spot, including the #2 national recruit. It seems we can land lots of top guys as long as they are either a) academic emphasis, or b) low in athletic prep. That's OK, we'll just redshirt everyone as needed.
On the downer side, which there always is in this business, we landed the 2 LB, but we also lost out on 9 other guys. Of those, 4 were LB's, including ILB Dana Bishop, #25 recruit, who chose UTEP. We also lost CB Sammy Grudich from OK, #61. Again, you can't get them all, and we are pleased so far with those that chose TCU.

Coach Purple would not allow a special guest performer this week following the Pamela Anderson "boob-fest" fiasco. This turned out to be a good idea as the Frogs rolled over the Bearcats in the 2nd quarter with 4 consecutive drives for points, 2 set up by interceptions.
The 3rd quarter saw Cincinnati possess the ball for over 10:00, including a 13 play, 75 yard drive, but that seemed to drain them and ,in the 4th quarter, TCU turned the table on Cincy, with 11:23 TimeofPossession to seal the game with a field goal at the end of a 7:07 minute, 84 yard drive.

We lost out on 4 players, including our other QB candidate, so Ike Palmer is our only good QB prospect still visiting. His emphases are Acad*, Dist. He is visiting Kansas, Michigan and Oregon, all of whom are half our Academic rating and farther away than Ft. Worth. We think he should be ours, though you never know in this biz.

This was as much a laugher as we have had since week one, as the score is not indicative of the relative ease with which we prevailed. Though the defense again gave up 300 yards, they rose to the occasion when called upon. 12 penalties, 3 turnovers and a missed FG kept the score somewhat close.
RB Graham Elliot had a great all-around day with 99 yards rushing, 71 receiving and 111 yards on kick returns. He scored 3 times on 7 and 3 yard receptions and a 1 yard run. Overall, Coach Purple had a good day and appeared to end with the same amount of gray hair as he started.

WEEK 12

The Game
  • Memphis (6-3) (+3) @ TCU (7-2)
  • Attendance: 41,200
  • 59 degrees, Clear
  • Memphis leads series, 2-0
In a game that would decide the fate of C-USA to some extent, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were on hand to open the game with one of those cartoon Dance-a-Long things to the National Anthem. It was very well publicized, perhaps accounting for the larger than usual crowd, many of whom were youngsters. It all seemed very festive with Mickey and Donald leading the many costumed Disney characters onto the field, hopping and twirling about. As the people pranced around the sideline, some of the characters were suddenly blown around by the huge fans on the Memphis bench. Even though it was 59 degrees and fans were not really needed, the Tigers had brought them in case one of those late season 90 degree days came up, as they sometimes will in Ft. Worth.
All of a sudden, costumes were being blown off some off the Disney characters, some of whom were wearing little clothing underneath due to the heat generated by the outfits. Now we had not dancing and prancing characters, but writhing and running semi-naked characters. Of course, the actors playing the Disneyites are usually young kids, and some of them are very nicely proportioned. Having no shame, the Memphis Tiger mascot began chasing Cinderella about the field, as she was really HOT and, having lost her costume, really half-naked. Little mice were punching at the Tiger mascot, trying to free Cinderella while the Tiger pawed and drooled all over her.
The Horned Frog mascot came to the rescue, punching the Tiger repeatedly on his big, goofy head, eventually freeing Cinderella and running off with her into the tunnel as her bared breasts jingled about. The Tiger was carted off on a stretcher, and the game got under way. For some reason, the Horned Frog mascot was not seen again until the middle of the 2nd quarter, and his outfit was very dissheveled, and he had a HUGE smile on his face that would not go away.
The game left no smiles on Coach Purples' face as Memphis trounced the Frogs all day, amassing 474 yards of offense. RB Graham Elliot had 100 yards rushing, but the entire rest of the team could manage only another 83 as TCU was battered about badly. Memphis clinched their second C-USA title in three years, and the Frogs were left wondering about their bowl chances after an embarassing loss.

No good news this week. We lost out on one of our FB prospects to, of all places, Sitka. Juan Malamala, #641, spurned Ft. Worth, leaving FB Randal Browning, #476, as our only remaining visiting prospect. Browning IS an Academic emphasis, so we feel good about our chances. He is also visiting Kansas State, Memphis and Sitka. We have much better academics than these schools, plus Sitka just signed our other FB prospect last week. If he does not accept, we will save the spot for next year and try for some walk-on FB.

  • Louisville leads series, 2-0
In a game to decide if the Frogs get their Bowl bid or if that bid goes to S. Mississippi, Coach Purple gave a rousing pregame speech which QB Benjamin Galloway apparently did not hear due to taking a leak or whatever. Galloway almost single-handedly kept the Cardinals in the game with 4 very ill-timed interceptions. Despite giving up 300+ yards, the Defense, for a change, was huge today, especially in the first half, when they forced 4 punts and held Louisville on downs twice. RB Graham Elliot had a 30-yard td run and the score was 7-7 at the half.
The 3rd quarter was a fiasco for Galloway as he threw 2 interceptions deep in his own end of the field. Through stout defense and a little luck- a Cardinal missed field goal- Louisville scored only 7 points, taking a 14-10 lead into the 4th quarter.
The game changed immediately for TCU as S Rondell Riekens returned an interception 63 yards for a score, giving the Toads the lead for good. The defense finally came through, stopping Louisville twice in a row, enabling the offense to ram the ball down the Cardinals' throat. Consecutive drives of 10 plays for 60 yards and 15 plays for 78 yards were completed with WR Ellis Twisp TD catches of 11 and 1 yards, respectively. With the game in hand, Louisville scored in the last minute to close the gap, but the day was won by TCU.
With the second best record overall in C-USA, we wait to see the bowl match-ups. S. Mississippi finished 2nd in the conference, but with a worse overall record. We will see in a couple of weeks how the bowl pairings are decided. Keep your fingers crossed.

Final Score: TCU 31 Louisville 20

Recruiting:

We have given our last scholarship for the year to FB Randal Browning, whose outstanding academics will hopefully lend itself to rapid improvement and let him step into a role as a good backup or better. Now we need only sit back and see who decides to walk-on for the 16th slot in a few weeks.

Recruiting:

Our class is finished, as Walk-On QB Monty Craig, from Carthage, Texas, has joined the TCU family. Our includes 7 top-100 recruits, 4 of whom are ranked as the #1 prospect at their position in the nation. We now know we cannot really recruit in the top 100 generally, but if we focus on our strengths, we can do well. Only Oklahoma State, with 9, had more top 100 recruits than we had.

Las Vegas Bowl

The Game
  • South Carolina (7-4) (-7) vs. TCU (8-3)
  • Attendance: 31,300
  • 66 degrees, Fair
In a first ever Coach Purple bowl game, TCU played like shit and got what they deserved...a total ass-whipping. Taking the lead with 8:39 to go in the 1st quarter, the Frogs had many chances to stay with the top 25 ranked Gamecocks, but just couldn't do it. A 16 yard td run by RB Graham Elliot gave the Horned Frogs a brief lead with 7:05 left in the 1st half, but key penalties and turnovers once more haunted the purple and white.
QB Benjamin Galloway threw 2 interceptions, the second of which was returned 84 yards for a td with 0:34 seconds left until halftime gave S. Carolina a 24-14 lead at the half, and TCU was never in the game the 2nd half, being shut out for the second 30 minutes and basically going backwards.
Seven penalties, more turnovers, sacks and a 31.0 punting average all contributed to the lack of any sustained offensive activity. South Carolina showed why they have their ranking, and TCU showed why they do not.
About the only high point of the game was K Vincent Boo not missing any extra points. Coach Purple was not mad, however, saying "We wanted to be in a bowl and we were. When the #6 team in one conference can handle you like SC did us, it is just another reminder of the work that is still ahead. Hopefully next year, we will give a better show for thr TCU fans."

Final Score: South Carolina 41 TCU 14

Players of the Week: Congratulations
RB Graham Elliot 21 carries for 86 yards, 2 td

Although this class of recruits is more athletically prepared than last year, they are a smallish class size wise. That does not really bother Coach Purple, however, as the scout rankings for these young men is extremely high across the board. As is his wont, Coach plans on redshirting all players that roster and future injuries will allow.
It remains to be seen what the Current Estimates of these lads will be to start 2005. The TCU scout, Deep South, who rates the players on the squad, has no time remaining on his contract. He is actually not a bad scout, but his weakness is at QB, and that is not a good weakness to have in this business, especially since Joey Hidy, the highest rated QB on the current roster, is rated only 23 at the end of 2004. Graduating senior Benjamin Galloway ended his career at 35, so that won't be a big deficit, if any (we hope).
