Roethlisberger to miss opener after appendectomy

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent an emergency appendectomy Sunday. The procedure went well, but Roethlisberger's status for the first few weeks of the NFL season is now in question.

Steelers coach Bill Cowher already ruled him out for Thursday's game against the Dolphins and named Charlie Batch as the starter. Cowher didn't elaborate on how long it would take for Roethlisberger to recover from the appendectomy.

Roethlisberger experienced pains in his stomach and was sick. According to his agent, Ryan Tollner, Roethlisberger underwent a routine repair of the appendix. Though Roethlisberger was sick before the operation, the appendix did not burst.

Surgery was completed by early Sunday evening. Tollner said Roethlisberger will stay in a Pittsburgh hospital through Sunday night and is expected to be released from the hospital on Monday. He talked to his agent before the operation and was reportedly in good spirits.

This is the second emergency surgery for Roethislberger in less than three months. He had to undergo facial surgery in June when he was involved in a motorcycle accident in which he was not wearing a helmet. The Steelers quarterback made an amazing comeback from that accident and participated in all of the training camp practices and played the entire preseason.

The timing of this most recent surgery couldn't have been worse for the Steelers and Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh opens the season against the Dolphins on Thursday. In some instances, a player can come back from an appendectomy in a couple of weeks, but there is not enough time for the third-year quarterback to be ready for the opener and it puts him in question for the next several games.

It also puts the Steelers in the market for a quarterback. They have only two quarterbacks on the roster after releasing Omar Jacobs and Shane Boyd.

That's more or less what they said about Brady his first two years. Ben's postseason last year made me a believer.

Don't be so sure, if Culpepper plays against the Pittsburgh defense like he did against the good defenses he faced last year, there won't be much scoring. Bet the under heavily.

anyone else think Ben Roflmaoburger is going to make a "miraculous" recovery and play in the opener?

No. Emergency appendectomy = no football for at least a week. I think he might miss the first 2 weeks.

If they had to open him up, I think he'll miss even more time.

However, they probably did it laproscopically if the appendix wasn't already burst (which is what it says in the article.)

They don't play until Monday the 18th, so I'm hoping he'll be back in time to kick some Jaguar ass.

Hours after the Bike accident Tommy Maddox called the Steelers front office trying to get his job back. They told him to go away.

I wonder if Maddox will be calling the Steelers again today?

Re: Roethlisberger to miss opener after appendectomy

You know the only Pittsburgh Steeler not invited to The White House this year. Apparently his reservation was accidentally lost in the mail or something.

Mr XFL himself Tommy Maddox.

I'd expect him to miss at least the first two games, he may try to play against Jax, but one solid tackle and he'll be crying for mama and some pain medication.... Abdominal stuff HURTS. The other big worry would be tearing internal sutures, he gets hit wrong, might not even be a hard hit, and tears something internally they wouldn't even know and he could bleed to death, they won't take that chance I'm betting.

On a serious note...how bad are Miami's CBs?
Would Daniels or Allen be 3rd on Pittsburgh's depth chart? 4th?!?!?
Maybe it's the homer in me, but I'd take Bryant McFadden over either of them, and Ricardo Colclough has looked really good in the preseason.

I won't go as far as to say Chidi Iwuoma is better!

Lee Mays could burn Miami's starting corners.

Come on...I already said they are better than Chidi...and Chidi would lock down Lee.

Look at that pass catching form man. Lee Mays is the fukn shit.

If we're going to talk about the battle of useless roster "special teams ace" suck, who would win a head 2 head matchup between Chidi and Morey?

It'll be a race to 100 passing yards. First team there wins.

No doubt Chidi...I've seen him make a play before!
I've never understood Cowher's love of Morey and Kriewaldt--they are the supposed ST demons, but can you recall either making a ST tackle?
Seems like it's always Chidi, Harrison, or even Greg Warren! But never those two.

Man, they f'in cut Chidi today to make room for Brian St. Pierre.

I think Morey is sucking someone's dick. I'd much rather have seen him go. I've at least seen Chidi make a few tackles.
