Interesting Pennington Stat

Being a Jet, I should hate him, but I have always thought he was a very good QB with all the intangibles. His arm injuries may doom him, but I found this stat about him from the Pats website mindboggling:

"Chad Pennington has passed for 41 TDs vs. 0 INTs inside Jets opponents' 20-yard line."

another way to look at that stat...

outside of the red zone, Pennington has an abysmal 14-30 TD to INT ratio.

Just what the Jets need. They have a QB who excels inside the opponents' 20 running an offense that will never reach the opponents' 20.

So this is now the second way to differentiate him from Dan Marino...

That's odd.

Most QBs find it harder to avoid INTs in the red zone because there's less field to work with, so the defense isn't as spread out.

However, since Pennington can only throw a ball a maximum of 20 yards in any direction, that shouldn't affect him.

This guy could be the most prolific passer from inside the 5 yard line in CFL history. He should get the chance to make history starting next year.

I have to say, all joking aside, that's a pretty impressive stat (although I think this is regular season only). One site mentioned he hadn't thrown a red zone int since pop warner.

I think it's an amazing stat. The Chiefs have had one of the more widely acclaimed offenses in recent years and Trent Green has throw seven red zone picks in the last two seasons alone. Red zone turnovers are freakin' killers. At the same time, Pennington's number of red zone touch downs for his attemptes is pretty darn good too -- in short, in the red zone he gets the job done.

Outside the redzone, he throws a few more interceptions than he should and a few less touchdowns than he should -- in the last two seasons, Green has a 23 to 23 ratio outside the redzone. I used that for a comparison because Green has thrown around 1,075 passes the last two season and Pennington has thrown around 1,150 passes in his career.

If he can stay healthy, I think Pennington would thrive in a more open-throttle offense. The more I look at the numbers, the more scared I get about Herm Edwards in Kansas City -- I'm scared to death he's going to try and run the Jets offense here.

I was really hoping Carl Peterson would introduce Edwards to the Chiefs offense and then tell him to never go anywhere near them again and spend all his time with the defense.

This made me laugh out loud. No truer words have ever been spoken.

I wonder if there is room for a specialty QB position in football. We have RB's who get pulled near the goal line. It'd be cool to see the same thing for a QB.

"Terrific pass by Green to Gonzales brings the Chiefs to the nine yard line. Here comes red zone QB Chad Pennington into the game to finish the drive off. He has an impressive 13 of 14 TD conversion rate inside the 20 this year"

Kordell Stewart would have been great if he were simply a red zone QB.

At least Aaron Brooks will be starting for the Raiders. Although Stewart was a great sure bet.
