Ad Question/Rant

Wouldn't it make sense for the ad to be preserved when you hit the back button?

I caught a glimpse of some Audioslave ad when I clicked on a thread, so I went back a page right away... and the ad changed to something about a student filmmaker going missing after The Grudge 2.

I've wondered about this many times (on all sites). I don't pay attention to ads, so when something catches my eyes, it's usually too late (as the next page loads). Click back, and no dice.

Countdown until someone comes into the thread to say "What ads? I heart Fireflocculant browser and AdSmasher plugin" or whatever the hell the stuff is called:

3...

I _think_ the answer to the question is that the ads are dynamic; i.e. they're served each time the page is called, not stored as an image attached to the page. Therefore when you go "Back", there's nothing there to show again & a new ad is called up (which just happens to have the effect of crediting the ad company with another tick on their counter)

Oh yeah, I know why it's happening... I'm just wondering if there isn't a better way. Store a cookie that remembers the last ad you saw so that when the back button is hit, it loads that ad again or something. The way it's done now makes ads 99.9% useless (other than providing revenue I guess).

What he's saying is that it benefits the ad company financially to do it this way. BIG TIME.

I probably hit my back button.. oh.... 50 times on FOFC in a day.. so doing what you are saying would be 1 hit for them instead of 50.

So, for the ad company, what you're saying would be a terrible idea.

Agreed... I guess what I'm saying is I bet the coding of it is probably easy, in fact they probably worked to code it NOT to do it the way you are suggesting.

If anything, it might actually increase revenue. If you really wanted to see the ad and decided to keep refreshing until it came up again, I assume each of those hits would be a cha-ching.

So, it seems like it is good for the ad company, but not so good for their customer (the product being advertised).

Agreed. But I don't know that many of these people are savvy enough to know/care.
