MNF- worse than theismann

as i am sitting here watching mnf i am wondering who could be a worse announcer than theismann. the word insufferable was invented after theismann became an announcer to describe him. could there be anyone worse- i mean anyone not just another announcer.

i think it would have been great if katie couric was doing mnf and theismann the cbs news.

Nobody.

It's strange: the guy played football for 12 years, yet knows nothing about football. And his constant whining is hard to put up with.

I don't like Theisass either.

If you could have any three announcers in the booth for Monday Night Football, who would you pick .... anybody?

Maguire was far better than theisman, the reason he's gone is because theisman bitched and complained that Maguire made him look bad.

But here is where he has no clue about broadcasting:

They show a graphic that shows how JAX hasn't lost a game when trailing by 6+ points in the second half in however long (I think it was 21 straight games). Tony K says..."well they just picked up points 4, 5 and 6...looks like they're going to win."

Fine, you made your point: this situation, which is completely independent of all the other situations, will 100% end up in Jacksonville's favor, just because it's always been like that in the past. We'll ignore the inaccuracies of this statement if you just shut up.

So the next play comes up...a crucial 3rd and 5 from deep in Pitt territory. Tirico is trying to, you know, do his job and announce the action. But Tony's not done. He has to interrupt and yell how "THIS IS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT!"

Ugh.

All Tony does is say "We talked to so and so and he told us blah blah blah" and that's all I ever hear him say. Tony's great on PTI and was on his radio show, but I agree that he's just out of place here. I'd rather listen to him than Joe Theismann though. Tirico is ok. I guess it is an improvement over last year's ESPN Sunday night crew, but they should bring back Nessler, Jaws, and Vermeil and then it would be enjoyable to watch.

Give me the ESPN "B" team. Vermeil and Jaws as analysts were terrific. May have been the best announced game I've heard in years.

Theisman talks about how he likes the aggresive play calling, and then the next chance he gets, he talks about how they need to take some time off the clock. He needs to take the cock out of his mouth, and go get a job at burger king, cause he's useless at his current one.

Ugh.

I thought he was subtly implying that the stat was basically meaningless (in essence, poking fun at it), but I may be wrong.

Mid-90's in San Diego, FOX had the genius idea of putting Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson to announce the Chargers and they were FAAAAR worse than anyone in the history of TV announcers.

"Whoa Jimmy, did you see that pass by Stan Humphreys?"
"I sure did Terry, that guy can throw".

Jesus Christ, Antmeister and I were in agony listening to that atrocity.

I'm not watching the game, but anyone who says Theismann is the worst either forgot or wasn't there to hear O.J. on MNF. Or Namath for that matter. Theismann is bad, but his awfulness isn't close to being in the same class as those two were.

hmm terry bradshaw! it's possible he might be worse than theismann. i have never heard him as a play-by-play guy but his presence on that pre game show is such that i would never watch it again.

really not many guys are bad. it just mystifies me how bad guys do show up on the featured games. oj, namath. theismann. there are about 20 college games and 16 pro games a week which means about 70-80 announcers. bob davie and theismann are the only 2 that come to mind that bother me.

i do agree that jaws and vermeil were really good. jaws is definitely a guy that has to be ready to make a move.

I wasn't watching the game, but I have to laugh when someone complains about a sports broadcaster and that broadcaster just happens to be talking over said viewer's head.

i think some people place too much stock in the announcers. i barely pay attention to the announcers. not that i tune them out, but i don't go over their comments w/ fine tooth combs. i don't sit on my couch with a scorecard judging their analysis. they're football announcers, not a debate team. between watching the game, trying to analyze the game for myself, paying closer attention to whichever of my fantasy players that are on the field, looking at the bottom of the screen for scores and stats to see if any of my other fantasy players are scoring...i don't really waste much time scutinizing the commentators. they're there to explain the action on the field to people who have a less than solid grasp on the sport/players. they all mostly say the same things year in and year out anyway, sports commentating is ripe with cliches and over generalizations.

Word. Announcers are only useful to me to say "flag on the play" before the little yellow flag shows on my screen.

responding to hell atlantic. you are almost right. most announcers are just non-descript guys whose names we don't even know or care about. we don't pay much attention to their comments. i like john madden but i don't really sit there and hang on his every word. once in a while he will say something that to me is noteworthy.

that's why i am amazed that the 2-3 guys that are really irritating like theismann, namath and davey are so successful. i would love to simply watch a game where theismann is working but the sound of his voice and his arrogance simply grate on me. it's like sleeping with someone who is a light snorer. try as you might you simply cannot disregard those sounds and then you begin to start anticipating the next one.

i grew up listening to the announcer of the 60's packers. his name escapes me but he was the greatest. he was always noted for his brevity of words. i also recall that he worked alone. the key is as hell atlantic was implying that we don't need everything explained and commented on in order to enjoy a game. 2 announcers is ok but 1 is best and 3 is too many. when you then add a blowhard like theismann to the mix it is a real turnoff.

i can still hear the words

"fumble!!

packers ball

1st and 10 packers"

I watched briefly last night and it seems Tony is finding his place. Theismann on the other hand seemed more annoyed and out of place and yet, the three of them worked better last night than any of the other night's I've seen.

I'm sure a change will happen though. And mostly because Tony will tire of the travel, more than anything else, after this season.

Poor Don Criqui introduced the Pats offense and then on the next play introduced the Pats defense this past week.

Kornheiser spends the entire broadcast goading Theismann and keeps egging him on. Kornheiser adds nothing to the broadcast. He even says "those guys" when referring to the teams on the field. He spends all week on a bus read a roster. Get a clue.
I feel sorry for Tirico sitting between the two of them and playing ringmaster in the circus.

That's my point. When you try to make your joke, and it misses, and everyone moves on (like Tirico did in actually trying to announce the play), let it go. There's a time for entertainment (about 55 minutes of gametime), and there's another time when I just want to see what's developing and not have to listen to the announcers screaming over each other.

Theismann to be replaced on 'MNF'

By Michael Hiestand,
USA TODAY

Joe Theismann will be replaced on ESPN's Monday Night Football, says an industry official with direct knowledge of the move.

The former Washington Redskins quarterback, who worked as an analyst on ESPN's primetime NFL games for 19 seasons, last year joined play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico and rookie game analyst Tony Kornheiser in the MNF booth last season.

Neither Theismann nor his agent, Sandy Montag, could be reached for comment.

Candidates to replace Theismann include ESPN studio analyst Ron Jaworski, as well as Bill Parcells and Emmitt Smith, who were recently hired as studio analysts.

Theismann could end up with other roles on ESPN/ABC's football coverage just as Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire were retained for ABC's college football coverage after they were removed from ESPN's primetime NFL game coverage before they were replaced by Tirico and Kornheiser last season.
