So who was the author of that book Chavez held up during his U.N. speech? None other than MIT linguistics professor Noam Chomsky, a self-described libertarian socialist who has advocated a society with no paid labor and says the U.S. is one of the major sources of international terrorism.

In the book Chavez was holding, "Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance," Chomsky says the pretensions of the American empire place human existence at risk.

Chavez said one of his great regrets was not meeting Chomsky before he died, which probably came as quite a shock to Chomsky, who is still alive and kicking at age 77.

My Dad, who used to work at MIT in the 60s and 70s, likes to tell the story of how Chomsky & his cohorts would incite students to riot during the Vietnam war at rallies, and then when the students went off to get the shit beaten out of them by the police, would retire to the Faculty Lounge for drinks.

As Reuters correctly reports, Chavez referred to his regret at not meeting the recently deceased John Kenneth Galbraith:

Mr Chavez invoked Bolivar and his other favourite leaders and thinkers as he lectured Americans on their own history and race relations, such as slavery and the conquest of Native Americans.

The Venezuelan leader told New Yorkers to read Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain as well as modern thinkers like Noam Chomsky and John Kenneth Galbraith, lamenting he could not meet Galbraith before he died in April at age 97.

"It's not easy talking to Americas about these topics, but it is the truth," Mr Chavez said. "You need to understand the truth."

On Wednesday, Mr Chavez began his speech by displaying a copy of American writer Noam Chomsky's 2004 book Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance, and recommended it to UN delegates and US citizens.

Even before the speech it was reported:

Beyond the classics of European literature, Mr. Chávez recommends works by Latin American political theorists and historians and even the occasional North American. Mr. Chávez says he read John Kenneth Galbraith as a boy growing up humbly in Barinas, where his parents taught school.

Galbraith’s “Economics of Innocent Fraud,” a witty critique of the American economy, stands out for Mr. Chávez. Galbraith, who died this year at the age of 97, “is not a socialist but still he is a critic of capitalism,” Mr. Chávez recently said on his Sunday television program, “Hello, President.” He has described himself as “Galbraithiano.”

Actually, I'm pretty sure he's retired from teaching.

And no matter what you say about him, Chomsky was and is a great linguist. A giant in that field, and I believe most of his teaching was on that subject. His politics may have been the subject of guest lectures, but I don't believe he taught any political science or theory classes.
