Television Purchase Confusion

I am in the market for a new TV, since the one we have is like 10 years old and everyone keeps raving about HD. I have not kept up with the latest Technology at all. I hear terms like Plasma, Projection and flat screen and I am in the dark. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions as to what to buy? I am looking for something in the 40" to 50" range. Basically it will be used for watching Sports and Movies on TV and with the XBOX 360. Thanks to anyone with some suggestions.

Even if you don't buy from them, Crutchfield has a lot of good info on learning about the different technologies. This link: hxxp://www.crutchfield.com/S-M58EusLSMRx/hdtv/?cm_re_o=fBBk_B0*kbELS*tpfMjt6

about halfway down has a bunch of articles describing the different types of HD technologies.

TV's are expensive, so make sure your wife doesn't see the bill.

EDIT: St. Cronin beat me to it.
