Breaking News: Chemical Explosion in RDU Area
On all local channels in the Raleigh-Durham viewing area, it looks like there is a huge, uncontained chemical fire in the city of Apex, which is a small area between Raleigh and Durham. Town is being evacuated and fires are supposedly over 100 feet high and too hot to get within firefighting distance right now. A chlorine gas cloud is above the area, as well.
I know we have a few guys from that area on the board, so hopefully they are all well. ![]() |

No terrorism has been mentioned. It sounds like a chlorine gas leak that caught fire. The town manager has been on and said that it is too hot to fight right now and that they cannot get within 100-feet of it. The scary thing is that Apex is largely a residential pocket (most people that live there work in Raleigh, Durham, or Research Triangle Park, so there could be a lot of people in danger. Hopefully they have all been contacted. They are trying to evacuate everyone now. |

According to the town manager "approximately half" of the 32,000 people that live in the town have been evacuated.

By the way, the either the town manager or one of the news anchors is drastically misjudging the number of people in the city. The town manager said 32,000, the news anchor said 3,200 (obviously a huge difference).
The mayor was just on and made it sound a bit better than the town manger. He indicated that the biggest concern is to make sure that no one gets near the cloud, as it could cause serious health damage. He indicated that they were not overly worried about property damage because it is in an industrial area. The name of the business that it originated from is called EQ. |

Some people must really cream themselves updating wikipedia so quickly:
hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apex,_North_Carolina On October 5, 2006 at approximately 10:30 PM, a chemical spill and several explosions occured at the EQ Industrial Services, forcing an evacuation of thousands of residents into nearby schools and hotels. Apex Town Manager Bruce Radford has said: "This is the worst possible hazardous materials incident you could have." |

Yeah this is pretty freaky, a lot of my friends and coworkers live in Apex (one had to rush home a while ago to check on his family) and I live only a few miles from there as the crow flies.
