Cool Some father and son karate action

I know, I know, I could have buried this in the "youtubing" thread but I felt we were somewhat cool enough to deserve our own thread...

From our latest competition, this past Sunday... It's actually son then father, but... Enjoy!

&nbsp

I came in 2nd out of six. Not bad but I could have won it. Probably slipped due to the stumble at the start of my kata. My son came in 3rd out of 3. To his defense, this was one of his cleanest he's performed that kata in a while so the other were simply better. It was also his last competition with that particularly heavy bo as we bought him a new one while at the competition site. That should help him gain speed in his strikes and sweeps.

It's more fun when you clip yourself in the nuts

Either one of you would absolutely destroy the 'star wars kid'.

Good stuff.

good stuff indeed... 2 ?'s... what do the black/white uni's signify? Also, shouldn't you be banned from the premises for wearing jeans or khaki's?

Your kid looked like he could hurt somebody with that thing, as most of his moves seemed to be "offensive", on the other hand, your "baseball" swing was the only the that would worry me.
I'd go in for the nut shot while you were trying to impress me with one of your baton-like twirls.

Why were actual throws involved in both of those Kata? They're almost entirely useless for actual fighting and do nothing to demonstrate your ability with the weapon or your concentration. If you did the throw whilst performing some body movement, I could understand why...

I'm not learned in martial arts, so the point's probably lost on me.

Good stuff.

Thanks, I guess . I got much fun out of watching that Star Wars kids after we'd started practicing for real with a bo. He looked even funnier then

In our style, called Nick Cerio's Kenpo, only student who have achieved blue belt can wear a black gi (the real name of the uni). White is reserved for lower belt, although many higher belts will choose to wear their whites in competition. As for the jeans, err, it was a competition. Not so sure what you meant there.

No problem, we can play who will get whose nuts first. I got quite a reach with that long stick.

They're open type kata, not absolutely meant to represent an actual fight. I also know a traditional type of bo kata as part of my kenpo training, but that one presented here is the one I practice for my pleasure. There's not really a point to the spinning/twirling of the bo, it's part of what you could call sport karate, just like some guys you might have seen who do all sorts of backflip kicks. There are no real point to doing a 540 butterfly kick, other than showing you can do one I mean...

About a throw not requiring concentration, well, that's your point of view. I dropped the bo on my first competition, when came the time to throw it. Got disqualified, so I'd say that even without moving, it's already some sort of a challenge... It is to me at least
