Sting Verbalizes What 20 Years of His Solo Music Had Already Confirmed
Sting: Today's rock music 'bores me'
POSTED: 10:19 a.m. EDT, October 19, 2006 BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- British rock star Sting said contemporary rock music is so stagnant that he prefers to sing 16th-century English ballads. The former teacher who shot to fame as lead singer, bassist and composer in the 1970s and '80s for The Police told German newspaper Die Zeit that he prefers singing songs of Elizabethan lutenist and composer John Dowland to the rock music of today. "Rock music has come to a standstill, it's not going forward anymore, it only bores me," Die Zeit quoted Sting as saying. The 55-year-old singer, whose birth name is Gordon Sumner, had a string of hits with The Police with songs like "Roxanne" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me." He has since also had a lucrative solo career with songs like "Englishman in New York." He recently appeared on NBC's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," playing a version of his "Fields of Gold" on the lute. "Forty years ago it was my dream to break out of Newcastle and never be poor again," he told the magazine. "I'm very privileged. I'm a successful musician, live in a beautiful house, and have a wonderful family."

Why? Just because he's right? The man's got more talent in his pinky toe than the vast majority of bands and performers coming out today. Don't hate the messenger, he's just stating facts. |

Oh, no! Sting says new rock music is boring! Well, that's all the impetus I need to stop listening to it!
BECAUSE STING SAID SO

I loved the Police, but IMO Sting is the most pretentious bore.

Good grief. Just because he's quoted saying that in an interview doesn't mean that he called the newspaper specifically to say that he finds the current music environment boring. You guys treat it like he called a press conference to make such an announcement.
While I'm not a Sting fan, I respect his music.

Sting makes Phil Collins look like Peter Gabriel by comparison.

I listened to the Sting CD of 17th century ballads this morning. It's pretty good except Sting doesnt have a good enough voice for it and it sounds strained in a lot of places.

I love Stings music .... I also love the stagnant rock he's talking about.... variety is the spice of life and I think thats all he's trying to indicate is that it'd be nice if more people tried something new and different.

I'm confused. Does this mean Sting is taking Phil Collins place on the upcoming Genesis tour? ![]()

No, but unfortunately, Gabriel won't be a part of it, either.

I don't mean to slag on anyone's taste in music, it's just that I've always hated Sting for how quickly he went adult contemporary after The Police broke up. He could have waited a little longer before turning into the 50 year old he actually became in 2001.

Regardless of how bad his music is, I still think he'll beat Jeff Jarrett.

Yeah, it's a great loss there -- it would be inspiring to see Peter all dressed up as a giant flower and calling for a 28-minute version of Foxtrot, while the rest of the band instead decides to go for I Can't Dance and forces him to march around the stage in a funny little walk. Hilarity ensues. |
