Here is the situation, the company I currently work for is looking at me for a position within that will force me to relocate to our business offices in Buffalo, NY.

I am looking for the surrounding areas that would be a good place for my family, I have the following cities given to me by some of the people I know that live there.

Orchard Park
Boston, NY
Hamburg
Amhurst
East Aurora
Varysburg
Eden
Holland
Springville

Now Orchard Park is where our new offices will be located so I need to know if there are any other areas within up to a 45 minute drive one way to Orcard Park.

Any help will be appreciated.

Can't really be of any help since that's not my part of town. I remember playing baseball tournaments in Batavia, which i'm pretty sure was real close to Buffalo, seemed like a nice area.

Learn something new everyday, never knew there was a Boston, NY.

I'd pm Render.

Looks like Orchard Park is south of buffalo, I think I would try to go south of That, perhaps onto the more inland side. And near an interstate. I've visited family there a few times, but we've mainly gone to Niagra Falls area.

Hope you like the snow. At least you'll have a (quasi)professional football team up there, and you can probably get tickets easily.

Do-it-yourself, or professionally?

The one time I've gone the latter route (paid by my new employer, fortunately), it was ~$10k for a 3br townhouse from Northern Virginia to Wichita. The next time I have to move across the country, I am just going to throw away everything I own and buy new stuff. Cheaper and easier.

I concur with the Penske recommendation. I've used them 3 times for long distance moves, and their trucks have been awesome. Never more than a couple of years old. When you go with U-Haul, you never know what condition the truck is going to be in. If you have AAA, Penske usually ends up being the cheapest option anyway. I wish I could have gotten my hands on a diesel. I had an unleaded engine each time, and I got in the 4 to 7 MPG range each time.

I've done it four times (Wichita -> DC, DC -> Wichita, Wichita -> Toronto, and now Toronto -> DC), and aside from the one I mentioned above, they were all DIY moves.

I'm not planning on moving again, but if I have to, I'm doing it your way.

I would concur with Render. I live about 15/20 minutes south (from the city direction) from Holland and Springville. Springville is nice. The 219 is right next to the town, and can hop on it and be in OP in a short drive (a little side note, the scence in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles when the two guys driving and car caught on fire was filmed in that area).

The nice part about this area is that the towns are tight, yet the traffic is heaven.

Orchard Park: Expensive to live and rent, good people, great shopping, just the "in" place these days, I'd avoid it.

Boston, NY: Boston and North Boston (where I lived last year) are excellent choices, they are 20 minutes from OP on 2-lane roads. Some snow, but mostly your rural cow-town type places. worthy option.

Hamburg: Wife's home town, excellent across the board, big enough for great shopping areas, small enough to walk around at night without fearing for one's life. VERY good option, look here first.

Amhurst: too far north, FAR too expensive, *I* wouldn't live there.

East Aurora: Too far south, really not worth it. nice place though.

Varysburg: No clue where this is.

Eden: Very nice area, bit out of range of everything, but if you like the country life this is your kind of place. Fairly cheap also.

Holland: Too far. Though they have a stock car race track

Springville: Good option, though a bit far south and you have to drive the 219 to get to anything, the problem with the 219 is the winds, in winter this road gets closed...OFTEN......

Just my quick thoughts on seeing this before I have to run off to put the lil ones to bed. Hope it helps!

It sucks right now, there are so many people in the company here in Arkansas right now getting ready to hit the road, and I wish I could ask them but I can't because this is all hush hush....

i'd go with hamburg... i lived there for 20 odd years(on and off) . Still close enough to everything you need but has some of that country feel to it.

Our church moved our pastor across country PA to CA last year. It was May, apparently the month affects the price/lb. That ran about $13,000.

Cringer and I work for the same company now...He posted a thread about it here a bit ago...He might know about it, but it's not official within the company yet....

Also, my company will pay for the move, but I need to try and keep it within a specific price range so I am trying to view how I would want to do this.

And as for quitting my job, that isn't an option, I am stepping up to an extrememly important role within the company, which I will announce once everything is finalized.

Way to go on making them pay for the move though, that's how it should be done.

As for the move, check with the trucking company ABF (an LTL carrier), Greg used them for his move and it may be reasonable for you. They drop a trailer at your house, you pack it. They take it to your new house and drop it, you unload it. Or, you can give me some of your new $$ and pay me to drive a rental for you.

Congrats on the promotion, I expect to be well taken care of now though.

Alright, well the deal is done, the move package has been agreed upon and the announcement is going out today to the rest of the company....

As of June/July 2007 I will be a resident of Kenmore, NY for at least the next year until I determine where I want to buy a home at.

I am extremely excited to get into a sports town that actually has passion for sports I love (Football and Hockey).

It will be the first time my wife has lived outside of Utah, it will be the first time I have lived more than a few months outside of Utah, and we are excited the kids get a different view on the world. (Trust me, Utah is quite sheltered).

If I get what I want for Christmas (My big ass BYU flag) people up there will think I am a freak, but I don't care...my Jeep alone will make them think I am a redneck hillbilly.....

Don't be decieved. Buffalo football fans are not actually fans of football. They are fans of the Bills, and only the Bills. Half of the fans at the games cannot even name 16 teams in the NFL, whereas a fan of the sport could list them all and most likely their starting QB, or at least their star player, if its not the QB.

If you're a fan of the Bills, you'll get what you want. If you are a fan of football, its maddening.

Kenmore's a good area.. if a bit urban for my tastes.

I'll second the recommendations for eventually settling in Hamburg.. that's where I grew up, and it's a great town. Good school systems, is only 20 minutes from downtown Buffalo, has a quaint Main Street section, has a mall and surrounding commercial area, and yet still has a couple of farms. Its western border is the lake and there's a town beach, and its eastern border is Orchard Park where you'll be working.

We are back looking for homes....

We are looking to Rent because I have a mortgage on a home in Utah I can't sell now (Well, I would take a 30K loss if I did)

So we are renting the home in Utah to pay our mortgage there, and will be renting in Buffalo, right now...

Clarence
Lancaster
Orchard Park
East Aurora

are areas we are looking at.....should I consider any other areas?

We are looking for at least 3+ bedrooms, 2+ baths.....

We are looking to Rent because I have a mortgage on a home in Utah I can't sell now (Well, I would take a 30K loss if I did) So we are renting the home in Utah to pay our mortgage there, and will be renting in Buffalo, right now... Williamsville Amherst Clarence Lancaster Orchard Park East Aurora are areas we are looking at.....should I consider any other areas?
