OT:GroupThink - Post Training Camp
Post training camp numbers in red. As expected, Isaac Terry and Hardy Wooldridge both had excellent camps. I'm pleased with the progress that Bubba Goad made as well. Clarence Cates was somewhat of a surprise in training camp. I didn't expect him to improve as much as he did. Last edited by Bee : 02-14-2003 at 08:46 AM. |

we should be fielding a pretty good offensive line. the holes should be there for the backs to run through!

Prime... who is going to run cuts/preseason? I can if you want, although My time this weekend will be somewhat limited...
If you could run cuts and the preseason, i could run the first set of 4 games? (If we're doing it that way)..

Wade that will be fine with me.
Defensive coaches. I would like you to take a look at your positions and give me an opinion on who you would like to see start the pre season games at your position. If you want to rotate people between games etc thats fine just let me know. Also I saw wade had a starting lineup posted in the other thread I will use that unless I hear differently. Wade would you send me your settings for the offensive game plan?

I am assuming everyone is anxious to get going with the games. So I am going to give my coaches a little more timw to weigh in then I am just going to go ahead and sim the first couple of games.

Sounds good prime.. does the offense need to cut anyone/put anyone on the reserves? If it's just reserves, reserve anyone who is not in the depth chart..
I'm very interested to see how things pan out... one thing I would ask, if only 1 QB and/or RB is getting much PT in the first couple of preseason games, can you change it up so that the others see more action?

Dola..
Once we start doing game reports... should that be in here or in the Dynasty forum? We seem to be hitting a grey area with that.. In addition, how much detail do you plan to give in your write-ups? One little thing I was considering is maybe we should use the MVP formula that QS and others developed to see how well it works..

Just a note, make sure to switch on the game logs and/or box scores before we start simming.
Also, in a standard cover two, each CB takes a side, rather than matching up the top corner against the top receiver. I prefer to play it that way, but whichever way we do it makes a difference on the depth chart. Last edited by DolaBump : 02-14-2003 at 12:48 PM. |

I was planning on having our corners just take a side.

Btw - after Preseason I'll post more detail about the game plan, at the time I just didn't have the time to do it. .I'll probably post the screenshots just like I sent to prime and QS, because that is just a LOT of info to type out

Sounds good to me... are we going to rotate some of the younger players a little over the preseason games? (Like the batch of DEs, perhaps to see who should get cut?)
By the way, wade, i agree with your call to start Pritchett at QB. His numbers in recent years have been pretty impressive. He desrves the first real shot, I think. |

We're actually a fairly veteran group in the secondary, the youngest guy is Zo and he's going into his 4th year. That said, I'd like to see what our back-ups can do, see how much we can afford to switch things up.
I was kinda unclear in my previous post, I prefer giving each corner a side to play in Cover 2. With that in mind: At LCB, I'd like to split the time essentially equally between LaRiche and Dennis, LaRiche as the tentative starter. I'm not sure exactly what settings to use in the preseason to achieve this, but I would think a playing time setting of 1 or 2 should accomplish it. At RCB, Zo's the man, though he doesn't need an enormous amount of time in the preseason and I'd like to see what kind of numbers Varner can put up -- h'es strong in the three categories I like for a Nickelback (Zone, INT and punishing hitter). SS is Bridgeman, FS is Wetherbee, no real question there, though again, we should limit their PT somewhat early in the preseason. Let's play the first two games with Dennis in the Nickel and Varner in the Dime and switch for the final two. We should primarily be playing a 2 Deep Zone, mix in some Bump & Run and Man, plus a little bit of 3 and 4 Deep. Also, I'd like to see some blitzing from our Secondary, particularly Bridgeman and the corners. Otherwise we're pretty much set in the secondary. Last edited by DolaBump : 02-14-2003 at 01:09 PM. |

Incidentally, since we seem to be w/out a special teams coach, we have no one to return punts. That said, we should probably put a back-up RB or WR back there who has a high avoid fumbles rating.
Just a note, Gabe Blow looks like a bust, so some decent playing tim in the preseason could give us a good idea about that sooner. At LB, we have no SLB -- do we need to change some guys positions? wow, I made it to Varsity on an on-topic post. How unusual. Last edited by DolaBump : 02-14-2003 at 01:15 PM. |

At what point do I need to switch some of LB's to SLB? Was it before the preseason or before the regular season?

I would say regular season, since the idea behind preseason is getting an idea of where eveyone stands. Though it would be more of a challenge to do it now.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe to a fault sometimes, I go by performance a bit more than some I think. I think some a scared by Pritchett's INT bar, but look at last year... 28/9 TD/INT numbers, I'll take that ratio every year and be ecstatic ![]() |

There were no injuries after the first exhibition game. Well the good news of course is we won. The bad news is the defense didn't play very well. Although that was with a lot of backups in.

DT R.J. Strikwerda is a questionable for the next 3 weeks.
Well again we won and the defense did better in terms of points allowed, but we are still allowing more yards than I was hoping for.

Should I finish the final pre-season games or do we want to give people time to look over the results?

Well... for right now, I'm freakin ecstatic with my setup and don't know that there is anything to possibly change, beyond making sure that our key players (the ox, pritchet, mcallister) don't get hurt..
Wow.. I'm VERY VERY ecstatic with how the offense is performing, it is doing exactly what I had hoped. I'm a little concerned about Pritchett's INTs, but with everything out it can't be a huge worry.. Unless someone disagrees, I say just roll with this making sure those 3 players don't see any PT so they don't get hurt, I think we know they're the real deal...

I have to go take care of something. I should be back in about an hour. That should give people some time to review the first two games and then I will finish the last two games.

Just a reminder, could you swap Varner into the Nickel position and Dennis into the Dime?
GAME 1 Varner: 0 Caught 2 Defensed 16 pass plays Dennis: 0 Caught 1 Defensed 20 pass plays GAME 2 Varner: 1 Caught 2 Defensed 33 pass plays Dennis: 1 Caught 0 Defensed 29 pass plays Dennis is playing just fine, but I like what I see from Varner. |

So we are down to cut down day. We need to cut 7 players from the squad. Any recommendations?

Well, Clavell is the obvious first cut
Other cuts: Lyle (DE) or Armendariz (DE), I would vote Lyle I'd be willing to cut one of the FS if necessary, but I'd want to look at the coverage stats. A QB? We probably don't need 4 Side note: Rhodes, 9-16 163 Yds 1 TD 1 INT 6-6 86 Yds 0 TD 0 INT Not bad, though probably against the back-ups Last edited by DolaBump : 02-14-2003 at 04:48 PM. |

I have cut Clavell, Lyle, and Linegar from the roster.
If I were going to pick 4 more people to cut I would probably say QB Houston, RB Dawkins, Fl DeWalt, and MLB Terrell.

I would agree on Houston and probably DeWalt, though wade might want to weigh in.
I kind of like Dawkins, but there is something of a glut at RB. |

Normally I would like Dawkins too, but we only have so many spots and with the 3 other RB's we have I don't see how Dawkins is going to get any playing time.
With that being said though if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know. I am not going to make any cuts to the offense until either wade or Quik have weighed in. But I will go ahead and but LB Terrell.

Hmmm... unless there's a strong reason, I don't think I'd cut a QB here. If we have only 3, and one gets listed as out, we'd then have to go and fish out a rookie bum to sign. Plus, we'd take a bit of future cap hit by cutting any of our veteran QBs. I think we have plenty of stiffs on the team to find other cuts. Just my thought.

Those are my thoughts also, I do not have the game in front of me (and won't until sunday night) but I would think we could find someone else on the team to cut and just have 1 QB inactive. |

If we cut anyone else from the defense we are going to be pretty thin on D. Personally I would rather sign a rookie bum to play 3rd string QB than a rookie bum to play 2nd string DT.

I don't see Dawkins gettting much playing time this year. He looks like a prime candidate to be released.

How about see what you can get for Dawkins on the Trade market??? Maybe a late pick???
BTW - I would love to be the special teams coach and just look on the FA Market and in the Draft for Special Team contributors to our Little Rock team... I just got the game today in the mail and would love to participate in the Group Think! Also being from NC I love the Kitty Hawk team name! |

Cuts
My 7 cuts would be:
Clavell Armanderez and Lyle Karl monahan- no reason for 3 FB's Ray Grier-We will take a cap hit of 750K for this and next season but he is not as good as any other LB. Try trading him maybe worth a 6 0r 7 rd. choice. Clifton Wallis WR Claude McGough Try trading Him |

MLB Terrell is a better candidate to be cut. Grier is a better run defender and a better zone defender than Terrell. Plus we don't take a cap hit for releasing Terrell.

My thoughts on who can be cut on the offense:
RB - Bayless or Dawkins.. not sure why everyone wants Dawkins over Bayless, when Dawkins seems to be as good if not better and Dawkins costs less.. FB - Karl Monahan - We have 4 FBs .. we don't need that and he can't block for anything... if we have to cut another one, I say axe .. Idano.. Clancy maybe? WR - if we have to axe someone, I guess wallis... I actually think I may like him better than Howard, but Howard would give us a cap hit.. OL - I'd rather not get rid of any of these guys...
