standings in conferences

in a college conference that has 2 divisions such as the Big 12. how are the standings determined? Texas and Oklahoma each have 1 loss with texas winning the mutual game. Nebraska has 2 losses and is in 1st place in the North division. If Nebraska were to beat Texas in the playoff game (not set as yet) that would give OU 1 loss and Texas and Neb each 2 losses. if this occurred i would guess that Nebraska is the !st place team and Oklahoma is 2nd followed by Texas. i just am not sure if this is right- very confused on this.

The conference championship game is not included in the regular season win loss total.

Well, I am sure it is different for all conferences (they each have their own rules), but my guess is that the first place team is the championship game winner, and the second place team is the championship game loser, regardless. After that, I believe they just refer to them as North 2nd place, South 3rd place, etc.

The only time it becomes necessary to rank teams after the championship game is probably for bowl bids, and I don't know what process they have for that.

Also, the place in the conference standings isn't tied to the bowl bids. The designation such as "#2 Big 12" or "#4 PAC 10" means that bowl's order in selecting teams from a conference.

Hmm, that might be the case for the Big12, but not for the Pac-10.

(Assuming one team to the BCS/Rose Bowl) the second place team goes to the Holiday, third place team to the Sun. The remaining bowl bids are the Hawaii, Las Vegas and Emerald, but I forget their order. I know the lower end bowls get their choice if there's a tie in the conference standings, but that's about it. Otherwise, they are obligated to offer that bid to that team, and may only choose their own or go with another conference team if that bid is refused.
