Auto Maintenance

It's time for my Toyota Tacoma's 30k maintenance, but the dealer is quoting me $499.95 (with a coupon). Seems a bit steep, but I have been slacking a bit on the maintenance (not driving as much this year), so the truck needs some attention.

Is the price too high for a 30k tune-up? What have you paid recently?

Nissan charges me $600+ for the 30k and 60k checkups on a '99 Altima.

I've heard a lot of mixed messages on the whole "set mileage tuneups", but if I were you, I'd go for it. $500 to give the vehicle a head to toe checkup is worth it. If something is really wrong, you'll be glad you did it.

Wow, my local BMW dealership charged me just under $400 for a major service.

To make things even better, they have just sent me a loyalty card giving me 20% off servicing and parts.

I would at least want a detailed message of what they are going to do.
Most spark plugs are not scheduled to be changed for 100k now, almost all new cars dont have plug wires, what are they servicing?

Persoanlly I think its a ripoff.

But then again I never have any of my maintenance done by the dealership, partly because I spent 5 years as a mechanic until I went to school and can do most myself, but I generally dont have the time.

My advioce (for what its worth) put that amount in a corner somewhere, if it breaks you have most of the repair bill saved, if not you have started a down payment fund for the next car.

Another alternative to think about is having the checkup done at a non-dealership mechanic. If you don't have one, it might help to do a little searching to see if anyone you know can recommend a good one. It does not affect your warranty at all to have a non-dealership mechanic do work on your vehicle.
