Job Search Advice
I have a question for those more familiar with searching out jobs. I'm a college assistant coach, looking to get a new coaching job. Many postings require that you send typical materials to the human resource department. It's widely known that Athletic Directors are in charge of their department, and are probably the ones who make the decision (usually with the help of a committee).
Anyway, my question is this. I have had multiple people tell me that it is beneficial to send multiple copies of your materials (via fax, mail, e-mail etc...) and to also send it to the athletic director, even if they aren't listed as the contact. My question is, do you think this is good advice, or will this create more of an annoyance than positive "face time"? Just curious to get some other advice on the subject. Thanks.

I'd say that's good advice. It's similar to my position -- the position I was applying for gets filled by the department, but HR is a semi-involved presence. While it's possible that the AD will see it as an annoyance, if there's a position open and postings are made, he probably expects it. If the AD likes your materials, he or she may press HR about getting you over for an interview.

Not helpful to you, but what sport do you coach?
Oh, and send the materials to the AD, but only send it to one person in the Athletic office unless multiple folks are listed as contacts.

Hey, I coach women's volleyball. Thanks for the advice, I think I'm going to start sending it to the AD as well as HR!
