NC State Football Coaching Search Over!
Seems that we have made the move to hire Tom O'Brien to be our next head coach. Personally I think this is a good hire because his proven track record at BC with substandard support/fanbase and tougher academic requirements. I am not jumping up and down by any means (like I would for Bill Cowher - yeah I know that was never gonna happen).
I think with the talent we have O'Brien can have a solid 8-10 win season as early as next year coming off our 3-9 debacle this year! Here are the links of the first places to break the story! http://www.boston.com/news/necn/Sports/ (seems legit to me) http://html.wral.com/sh/blogger/wralglenn.html (very well respected NC area and ACC Area college sport expert) |

WTF???
BC, a perennial Top 25 (or at least always on the fringe) and perennial bowl Team.. to NC State??? Must be paying him a LOT of money.

Yup, he was the 10th highest paid coach in the ACC. Oops.

Wow... was O'Brien making $733K from the University plus additional, outside money or was he making that much total? That is real surprising for a 10-year coach that has had pretty good success.

O'Brien is vastly underpaid. USA Today recently published a salary survey of every D1A coach and O'Brien checked in at $737, 626 per year which included monies from perks and performance bonuses. It didn't include money from outside sources, but how much can that be? TOB is the 10th highest paid coach in the ACC. That's not good. Al Groh, who has done nothing at UVA, makes $1.785 million. Tommy Bowden, who has lost to O'Brien each of the last two years, makes $1.198 million. Chuck Amato, who was just fired at NC State, was making $995,000. Aside from Bobby Bowden and Frank Beamer, who has been more successful than O'Brien in the ACC the last two years? Randy Edsall at UConn makes more than O'Brien ($845,000) and he's led the Huskies to nothing the last two years. Ed Orgeron, the lowest-paid coach in the SEC, makes more that O'Brien ($905,000).

I don't like it. I wanted State to find a bad coach.

Outside sources can be very significant. I know Coach Rodriguez at WVU only makes about $300K from the University, but he is guaranteed another $800K or so from camps, TV/radio/public appearances, apparrel (sp?) contracts, etc. Wolfpack or another fan of one of the NC ACC teams can verify the exact number, probably, but at North Carolina state schools there is a cap on how much the school itself can pay a coach and I think it is less than $300K, as I recall it coming into play when NC State was looking for a basketball coach. |

Yeah, it's unfortunate. While I'm not wildly in celebration about this hire, some in our fanbase are just out of their minds about this. We got people bitching about the fact that when O'Brien was asked about it that he said "that'll have to come from North Carolina" and he neglected to say "State" anywhere in the comment. I'm just staggered about that, really. I never realized our fanbase was that insecure about their position relative to UNC. It's been a rather ugly display over the last 12+ hours on the board. If it weren't for the fact that it's practically the only place I can get any decent State chatter at all, I'd have left that place long ago. *sigh* What are you worried about? Grobe has had O'Brien's lunch. (3-1 over the last four years) |

Another small factor moneywise is that money goes farther in Raleigh than it does in Boston.
And, while I don't know O'Brien's family situation, there are a lot of advantages to raising kids in North Carolina. Like, for instance, once he establishes residence here, his kids can go to UNC-Chapel Hill for an in-state tuition rate. ![]() Last edited by albionmoonlight : 12-07-2006 at 10:21 AM. |

As a BC grad, I am very disappointed by this news. O'Brien is a class act - he brought stability to a program that was in trouble and has been remarkably successful notwithstanding the higher academic standards imposed on him. He is a very good coach, recruiter and 'face' of the program. NC State should be very happy to get him, and its a big loss for BC.
