I was just reading about Wild Arms 3 and it seems pretty good. BTW...Walmart online is having some pretty good PS2 deals. 3 for $25, 2 for $25, and 2 for $30.

i've played:

dark cloud 2 - 10/10
dragon quest 8 (good traditional rpg) -8/10
xenosaga series (good sci-fi storyline) - 8/10
tales of legendia - i abstain from a vote, since tales of symphonia was so much better it ruined this game for me. symphonia is a gamecube exclusive i think. legendia is still an interesting and unique action rpg.
shadow hearts - 9/10

i've never played the kindgom hearts games, but if you're buying for younger kids, this is the way to go. it takes place in the walt disney universe, and i've heard lots of good things.

I've always been privvy to Shin Megami Tensei games, albeit difficult for most, but entertaining for me at the least.

Dragon Quest 8 and Shadow Hearts:From the New World were ones that I really enjoyed. DQ8 was a pretty traditional RPG while Shadow Hearts was not like anything I had played in the past (I never played Shadow Hearts Covenant but I heard good things from this board so I tried From the New World).

Shadow Hearts hooked me just as much as FFX did (and FFXII is right now) and had me playing for long periods of time. Anyway, they are both well worth it since you can now find them for around $20 on Amazon. Just one RPGer's opinion!

Growlanser generations for me, since its two games in one.

Shadow hearts never got me...i own it, but i just cant get interested in it from what ive played in the beginning. It just doesnt grab me

Kingdom hearts is a pretty fun game, and the sequel is supposed to be good(not as good). BUT, its sqauresoft so it has definite similarities to FF12. Its quite different, but you see parallels.

Hell, i still play old PS games like FF Tactics and Chrono Trigger on my ps2

Mrs. Leafs has played all three of these and enjoyed them, in roughly that order. She also liked the Kingdom Hearts series.

Thanks, folks.

Ordered Dragon Quest 8 and Kingdom Hearts 2. It's for the girlfriend who just bought herself a PS2 and loved the NES/PS1 Final Fantasy games, among other RPG's.

Dola. Might have to "accidentally" open Dragon Quest and ahem....test it before I wrap it up.

Looks like I was a bit late, but Star Ocean is pretty good.. (also a fan of DQ, but it's been mentioned more than once).

Xenosaga is my fave RPG series after FF as far as PS2 goes.

The Dark Cloud games are pretty good, too.

X-Men legends and x-men Legends 2 are very good action RPGs.

oh shit, how could i forget disgaea. i've got 1 and 2 and love them both. i liked phantom brave better, same type of game.

and i hated star ocean because i expected lots of futuristic space junk, and instead got a game fought in the middle ages. didn't see that coming

I would strongly recommend getting the original Kingdom Hearts first since the stories do have some in common. It's not a Final Fantasy where everything is different from game to game.
