Does he look to you guys like a complete wreck of a QB ? I certainly wasn't thinking he'd be a pro-bowler when I chose him, but geesh.

His end of year stats :

280-528 (53%); 2702 yds.; 6 TD; 23 INT; 53.2 QB rating
51 sacked for 330 yds & 26 knockdowns
35 rushes; 134 yds; 3.83 AVG; 0 TD; 20 FUMBLES

Thats right 43 TURNOVERS !

It was my first year of a complete draft league, and his backups were both rated under 20 and rookies. Ouch.

I would have expected him to perform much better with an 87 at reading defense. However he has an inablity to throw short or long passes and a relative low accuracy rating(in other words as you said not a pro bowler). May I ask how good your O-Line was and how many hurries, knockdowns and sacks they gave up?

Also, what about the talent at WR, RB and TE? I believe a guy like that would probably fair a little better with talent around him, b/c he isn't going to carry an offense himself.

Also, what kind of gameplan were you running?

Oh yeah, that's definately it. The team is full of youngsters, and his receivers were - well junk lol. I drafted the team with the mindset of 1) youth 2) defense 3) run blocking O-Line. Am going for a pound it, tough D team.

So, I'm sure that was key - but I was still a bit awed by the TOs.

(also, I just noticed this too - his QB style "short passes"; his "short passes" rating : 26 - that prolly don't help lol.)

I've never really done a study on the type of QB, "short passes, etc, but the lack of talent around him was most likely it.

Also, sorry I didn't notice the sacks and all that but I got to say

I feel O-Line is a place where improvement is needed in my current team, but the last 3 years they have only given up 18, 13, and 23 sacks the last 3 years as well as 13, 15, 37(a little higher than yours) knockdowns. So I believe pass blocking is an area you need to improve as well. Your QB appears to be getting hit alot.

At 23 sacks and 37 knockdowns is where I draw the line against my O-Line and make a decision to completely overhaul it. I couldn't imagine 51 sacks and 26 knockdowns. I can't see you getting much offensive production at all giving your QB that little time.

I would closer to where I was the previous two years, somewhere around 13-18 sacks and 13-18 knockdowns. That is a good pass blocking team, especially when you throw it 60% of the time.

Why did you play him so long? You should have hit the free agent market and looked for a high potential QB. Since they tend to perform like their green bars instead of their red bars.

Didn't have anything available in the FA market either. It was a startup (1970) file that I dumbed the FA talent down to almost nil - trying to let the "real" NFL guys in the future draft files come into the league and become the "talent".

It sounds like this QB is poor in avoiding interceptions and in avoiding fumbles. Those two are hidden ratings for quarterbacks (and the fumbles one too for other positions). And getting sacked a lot doesn't help to avoid turnovers either.

With that kind of QB i would have setup a special gameplan. He is good on 3rd down situations and also in short passes, so it's obvious what you need to do.

Run, Run and then short pass to get the 1st down, then repeat.

Grab a RB who can run and has also good hands, then also a good FB and TE and he should perform well in that kind of offense. Also throwing short passes you will limit the number of sacks and ints if your Oline is not able to protect for long periods of time.

I too have been burned by fumbling QB's (20+) per season. Of course they were getting sacked 40+ times/season.

Pass Blocking skills help, but I also find that the better my team's running game goes, the better the QB plays...and I win more games too.

Worst quarterbacking I've seen was a tandem for the 2016 Baltimore Ravens. The unlucky duo:

Byron Leftwich: 11 GS, 167/309, 1808 yards, 5 TD, 16 INT, 4 Fumbles, 38 Sacks, 55.3 rating
Bucky Freestone: 5 GS, 145/294, 1330 yards, 2 TD, 16 INT, 10 Fumbles, 22 Sacks, 41.6 rating

This team was so bad that after 12 games, they were 0-12 and had scored 3 TDs. The QBs had a combined 0 TDs and 26 INTs. Someone lit a fire the last 4 games of the season, though, because they scored 7 TDs and won their last game 20-13. I guess Byron "saved" them...

I guess he is ok in screens, but surely not short passes. Although a good recieving RB, FB and TE are all good suggestions. I just wouldn't build a short passing attack around a guy rated 26 in short passes.

Well, I signed an average QB in the next FA, and he performed average - but has gotten better. We're now winning, although it's mostly because of my RB (2 str8 MVPs).

More importantly - Mr. Davis (the QB I posted about) sat the bench for me for 2 years after that, then I didn't resign him. Dallas went for him, and made him there starting QB - where he had a little better season ..

270-456 (59.2%); 3005 yds; 18 TD; 16 INT; 77.4 QB rating
31 rushes for 107 yds and 0 TD (3.45 ypc)
sacked 41 times; knocked down 11 times; 10 fumbles.

So, he still appears to be playing behind a bad offensive line - but looks alot better. Actually, pretty close to what I expected of him.
