Home networking
Are there any home networking experts out there? I'm having a hell of a time trying to get my new laptop to see the Internet, and I just can't figure what to try next. I'm using the onboard wireless from my Asus motherboard in AP mode, and the laptop is detecting the wireless signal normally, that's not the problem. I've tried setting up Internet Connection Sharing multiple times and it's not taking, I can get the laptop to the point where it can ping the desktop, and even ping out to my cable modem, but not beyond that. I've tried different setups, disabling firewalls, and so forth, and I'm getting pretty desperate here.

Are you using a router or are you using wireless from the computer? |

No router, my cable modem is connected directly to my desktop which is able to function as a wireless AP.

dola - My suspicion is that this is some kind of name resolution issue, it was confirmed when I just determined that I can ping to at least one internet site from the laptop via IP address, but can't get there by name.

Well find out what the DNS servers are set to on your desktop PC and then go in to the network properties on your laptop and set them to be the same. |

Just a suggestion, I would get a wireless router if I were you, I'd recommend a Linksys WRT54G. So you wouldn't need to have your desktop your computer on in order to use your laptop online.

Well the good news is I got a wireless router and got the laptop to connect to the internet, so I'm over that hurdle. Now I'm facing the issue that has dogged me before, is there an easy way to make sure that my desktop and my laptop can see each other and use each other's drives? I've set up file sharing and they're in the same workgroup but they can't see each other

Woot, got it fixed, I needed to set up the firewall on the laptop to trust the desktop's IP, now all is good.
