Renegotiation Question

I just read thru the new posting for new players like myself.

From the update for provided by Skydog for FOF2007, the guide says I can renegotiate contracts with current players either in the preseason or regular season phase (up to the super bowl).

Is there any advantage of waiting as long as I can before I renegotiate with a player. Or should I do it during the preseason phase.

TXS

The advantage to waiting is that it sucks to give a long-term extension to a guy in the preseason, and then he tears his ACL in Week 4 and is a shadow of his former self. The disadvantage of waiting is that he gets paid his entire salary, which could put you in a situation where, because of the cap, you can't afford to give him the extension after the season

I always wait until the end of the season and evaluate according to season stats - for the most part.

Works less well in 2007 because of cap problems, as SkyDog pointed out. Players will generally ask for a very small salary in the first year. If you wait to the end of the year you don't get the benefit of that as their salary already paid for the season counts against the cap.

In SP I wait until preseason before renegotiating. If they get injured during the year then that's just too bad but I can suck it up. I guess in MP there's a chance that I'll be taking more of a risk and reneg in week 1 if I want to sign some FAs. (which I never do in my SP games).

If a guy is about to have his role increased -- for example, you expect to start him this year after a few years as a backup -- you would want to get him locked up before he starts racking up stats.

Most do not sign for more years than their current structure anyhow.

You can usually get a guy in the last (and maybe second last) year of his contract to sign a deal for 1 year more - might have to bump the money up a bit, though.

Sometimes.. although it's so different this year when trying to resign a guy.
