PS3 Games

I just picked up a 60GB PS3 from Best Buy. I have yet to open it because I wanted to wait a few days to make sure I want to actually spend the money on it. For now, I was thinking about getting one in the next few months but didn't want to miss a chance with the nice 3-year zero interest financing they are offering. I am in my last year of grad-school and this is a huge factor for me! I also picked up a Samsung 40" LCD HDTV, which I'll definitely be keeping, and have upgraded my DirectTV account to HD (coming soon).

I'll be think about whether to keep the system or not but in the meantime, what games are out right now that are "must haves" if any?

For the record: I do like the X-Box 360 and Wii but there is no comparison in equipment when it comes to the PS3 IMO. Even if I used this thing as a Blue-Ray DVD player ONLY it was worth the purchase (have you seen a DVD with this yet? Jesus!). The PS3 also comes with Bluetooth capability, wifi, and free online gaming, a price that will make the PS3 cheaper than the X-Box over the long-haul. The Wii is very fun but not so much my style. If I end up getting a Wii it will be for having people over...sort of the 21st century's version of "board-game-night."

Anyway, just curious about some of the games that are out or soon to be out. I am big into sport games but am completely open to going another route since most of the sport games usually take a year to hit their stride on a new console. I plan on buying MLB: The Show in March however.

Thanks for the help everyone. I've always valued the opinions of people in this community especially in regards to items such as this.

Resistance is currently the cream of the crop. I'm not a big FPS person, but I played the entire single player campaign and enjoyed it a lot. NBA 2K7 and NHL 2K7 are great sports games.

I'm playing a lot of the NBA game right now. Really immersive stuff with the pre-game, halftime show, post-game, cheerleaders, player-specific animations and crowds. Lots of game modes as well. The career and 24/7 modes will give more gameplay than you'll ever actually finish. The NHL game is a very polished game as well. The NCAA 2K7 b-ball game is also coming out soon if that's your cup of tea.

Here's an article detailing some of the games coming out in the next month or two. Lots of good stuff. MLB 07 The Show is not on this list, but is also coming out in March.

Here's a release list as well that includes some of the downloadable new games that are also coming out.

NBA 2k7 is a great game and right now gets most of my game play time.

Fight Night is another I'd highly recommend.

My daughter bought me Call of Duty 3 for Christmas, if you like fps it is very impressive.

We also have Tiger Woods, a beautiful game though I really haven't had any real time to play it. My son used the face generator to make him and me for TW. His "game made" player looks just like him, it's almost scary how real he looks in the game. The model he made of me isn't quite as good as his model but he didn't spend as much time on it as his and neither one of us could find a way to get in my bald spot

And like you I will be getting MLB the Show in April.

Did you get the 51 series samsung, or the 41 series(white one is 52 series)? Cause you can pricematch the 41 down to 1199(circuit city) if you didnt. The 51(2) series are a lot better than the 41 series imo. Unless you got the 1080p model.

I got the black one but it was not an 1080p. I think it looks terrific. It was the one with the 3000:1 pixel rate (is that what it's called?). I did indeed price match with CC. The signature ones with the ratio of 4000:1 were not in my price-range.

I was impressed with the 1080p models but since none of the networks have this yet I didn't mind waiting. I figure by this time they will have an upconverter for the actual cable/satelite connection itself.

Actually, the networks do have 1080p programming already. Both of the conference championship games yesterday were in 1080p and my understanding is that they'll have all of their HD broadcasts next season in 1080p. But it's certainly not a major task to 'suffer' through a game watching it in 720p or 1080i.

Did they give you the 100 dollar nflshop rebate form? May just be where I work, but there is a promo on all samsungs 40' or larger where you get a gift card. Might be worth checking into if you didnt get it.

I really want that white/red TV, but we don't carry it where I work. I do like the black/blue sig series, might save for that one, try to get it when it's aggresively priced somewhere.

1080p doesn't really matter till you get over 50 inches.

More game info about upcoming releases off the 'unofficial' Sony blog. Here's a preview with screenshots of Virtua Tennis 3:

Some screenshots of F1 Championship Racing. I've played the demo of this one. Racing in the rain is a lot of fun (until you spin out).

www.monoprice.com for reasonably priced hdmi cables/mounts. Those 120 dollar monster cables are a waste.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I agree about the 1080p really not mattering too much with my 40". It's beautiful on the TVs I saw it on (bigger ones) but it just wasn't worth the price (plus I wouldn't have been able to get the PS3!) nor was it in my budget.

With Blue-Ray DVD and PS3 games, will I be seeing images on 1080p much like using a DVD uncoverter?

I still cannot decide on which game to get. I did not get an NFL coupon, I will go and talk to Best Buy tomorrow unless my night class gets out early then I can go there tonight.

If I'm not big into FPS, but have enjoyed a few in the past, is that 'Fall of Man' game worth picking up? If I were a FPS it'd be a no-brainer! I was actually drawn to the graphics on that WWII fighter pilot game, but it had horrible reviews about being bland and non-existent online play.

This email is sporadic! Sorry, I'm at work rushing around lol. Thanks again! Keep 'em coming.

I got my HDMI cables, for both the TV and PS3, for about $54 a piece from Best Buy.

Take them back if you still can, they are basically a rape job. Not a whole lot of difference in cables at 4' since all they are doing is sending 1's and 0's.

I was much like you. I'm not a huge FPS player, but I bought Resistance because I had heard it was the best available on the PS3. I didn't regret it at all. It was a lot of fun.

I briefly played the multiplayer mode and it was really nice as well. Really easy to get into games with 30 or 40 players and just start blasting away. I wasn't any good at it, but it was still fun.

I'm gonna wait until the new Gran Turismo comes out. Until then I can get by on the old console.

Right on... awesome game. It may just be me but it seems a bit tougher once you get about 15 fights in. or my skillz may be eroding

Also suggest Ridge racer 7. I was looking for a traditional racing game where you need to factor in gearing, breaking in corners, etc. Well, RR7 does not mimic a real life race but the graphics are sweet and the "drifting" fetaure is actually quite fun. I would recommend this one as a fun game where realism is less important than just flat our zooming by some other racers. It has about 20 (+/- I think) tracks that you can mirror if you want. Fun play...

Tony Hawk project 8 is anothe rgame that is just fun to play... the top level tricks are kinda tough (need to hammer like 8 buttons in a certain sequence, yikes!) but I usually lose a few hours at a time playing this one..

I don't see any compelling reason to get PS3 yet, and I'm a big PS2 fan. I'd let it and the games for it drop in price. Easier to do if you have a 360 already.

He's already bought a system, so not really an option.

For the next month or so, I'd generall agree that there's probably not much of a reason to buy the PS3. March and April is when the good stuff starts rolling in. But there's certainly good games to keep new purchasers busy until then.
