Wedding Reception Music Ideas

This could go in a million different ways, but that's what I'm hoping for.

My lone goal for the wedding (besides attending) is to pick out the wedding reception music. I'm not entirely sure why my girl is allowing me to do this, but so be it. So for the past 3 months I've racked my brains, and I really haven't come up with much so far. So I'm requesting suggestions for the music.

No, she said no to that. DJ

Also, I'm trying to come up with songs that won't make her dad think of me sleeping with her that night.

That means Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" is off the table.

Appeal to all generations. Therefore make sure to include songs your parents, aunts and uncles will like too.

The only thing I did for my wedding other than show up was pick the song that my wife and I danced to.

I went with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins. It was a big hit.

I'm getting married in July. My fiance and I picked a DJ that plays music that we like, mostly R&B from the 70's - 90's and some select songs that we picked. We made sure it was music that we wanted, that people would dance to, and wouldn't offend anyone.

So, play what you like and play songs that will get people up and dancing.

Oh, and congrats!

My buddy and his then fiance had a whole song list scripted out for their reception. After the first 10 minutes or so, we told them, screw your list, we are playing what we want to listen to. My buddy was originally from Liverpool, UK, and a lot of his family was there. Once we started playing some Beatles, it was ONNNN!!!! One of his aunts later performed a keg stand while we played "I Saw Her Standing There". It was awesome.

We are getting a band but in out research it seems most DJ's will play whatever you want. Are you looking for specific songs?

Also, man, I wouldn't really stress out on this. Any DJ worth a damn should be able to help you fix up a playlist really quickly. They usually have songlists, you can veto what you don't want, and then maybe add some more of your favorites.

Find a DJ with a set list you like, figure out a half-dozen or so songs that you and she both love and would want to hear, figure out if there are any vetos (songs of ex-girlfriends, etc), and let them go. Best bets are 60s-70s-80s popular types - the songs everybody knows and will get out and dance to.

I. Hate. DJs.

Therefore, we are going to do an "ipod" DJ. Really it'll be a laptop, but we're just going to get as many songs as we can, setup a playlist, and have someone (a friend) avaialble to modify if necessary.

EM, here's a couple of links that might be of some use to you.

Top Wedding Songs from Discjockeys.com (these are by category, like recessional, father/daughter dance, cutting the cake, etc.)
http://www.discjockeys.com/top_wedding.php

Top 200 Most Requested Song from Discjockeys.com (these aren't wedding specific, but they might give you some ideas about what will get people to dance, which seems to be your main objective)
http://www.discjockeys.com/top_200.php

And, although it isn't a song list, this link seems to have some good general advice. I figured it might be useful to you since it includes this snippet Frequently... very frequently, in fact... we're told not to play The Electric Slide, The Macarena, or the Chicken Dance. That exclusion is quite understandable, since those songs are so overplayed that they audibly illustrate the word "trite."

Man, I hate the song and the dance. I've already been told I'll be dragged onto the floor to do it. I plan on kicking and screaming all the way.

Easy:

My wife was in a wedding three months ago, and I was asked to put together a danceable playlist for the reception. It was designed, as someone mentioned, to get people from age 25-55 out on the dance floor, to make sure people could shag (Easy knows I mean the dance, you pervs), to include a good variety of music, and to be as "clean" as possible for the father of the bride's sake. It worked quite well, if I do say so myself. Give me a holler if you want to steal from it.

Oh, and I agree with the sentiment that in this day and age, if you have someone who can just set up your sound system and is willing to be available to pause your playlist (there's ALWAYS at least one guy who wants to get out of dancing), an mp3 player or laptop works just as well as a DJ, and is a lot cheaper.

Nothing sets up an atmosphere of love and dedication like some good old fashion German death metal.
