Give me some team names if you please

Hello all,

I'm starting up a fantasy league based on an idea I saw in the archives here - a league that starts up after World War I, filled with rookies in the first year and growing into a real pro league over the years.

I'm relocating teams, therefore, to account for the more populous cities at the time (with still some selection to have variety, and group cities into regions). I've put the projected league structure below.

What I'm working on, and would love some help with, is team names. Ideally I'd like to have names that relate to each city in some appropriate way, such as the Boston Minutemen. Of course I'd like them to be appropriate for the time of the league, so no Rockets or Jets for example. I'm hoping with people from all over the place on the boards here, some of you may have good suggestions for cities I know very little about. Thanks for your ideas! Some ideas I've brainstormed already are in parentheses.

New England Division
1 New York city, NY (imperials, bombers, skyscrapers)
3 Philadelphia city, PA
7 Boston city, MA (Minutemen)
15 Providence, CT (Whalers)

Midatlantic Division
14 Washington city, DC (generals)
8 Baltimore city, MD (ravens)
29 Louisville city, KY (stallions, rapids, colts, thoroughbreds)
38 Richmond city, VA (cavaliers)

Deep South Division
33 Atlanta city, GA
36 Birmingham city, AL
17 New Orleans city, LA (jazz)
40 Memphis city, TN

Great Lakes Division
2 Chicago city, IL
4 Detroit city, MI
5 Cleveland city, OH
11 Buffalo city, NY (blizzards)

Rust Belt Division
9 Pittsburgh city, PA (steelers)
16 Cincinnati city, OH
21 Indianapolis city, IN
18 Twin Cities, MN (minnesota twins)

Midwest Division
6 St. Louis city, MO
19 Kansas City city, MO
25 Denver city, CO (rockies)
34 Omaha city, NE (braves)

West Coast Division
10 Los Angeles city, CA
12 San Francisco city, CA
20 Seattle city, WA
24 Portland city, OR

Western Division
41 San Antonio city, TX (missionaries, sharpshooters, riders, defenders)
42 Dallas city, TX (lone stars)
45 Houston city, TX (oilers)
57 Oklahoma City, OK (cowboys, ranchers, braves)

Cool idea ...

Here are a few ideas:
Philadelphia - Freedom Fighters, Freedoms, Liberty Bells ...
Boston - Traders, Riders (Paul Revere)
Washington DC - Senators, Commanders
Baltimore - Traders (can use for any port city)
Atlanta - Chattahoochees (River), Peaches,
Memphis - Smokes (BarBQ)
St Louis - Brewers (Anheuser-Busch)
Detroit - Motors (anything to do with cars)
Cleveland - Barons (as in Railroad barons)
Los Angeles - Stars (Hollywood)
San Francisco - Goldens (Golden Gate bridge)
Seattle - Emeralds
Portland - Timbers, Beavers

That is all I have right now.
On eidea would be to take some of the same cities baseball names and find something similar. For example, Boston Red Sox ... Boston Red Shirts or Red Coats. I honestly think that that is what they did in reality for some (Tigers - Lions, Cubs - Bears).

Birmingham's two largest industries were iron and steel production - so something like the Birmingham Ironmen, Birmingham Steelers, etc.

Providence, RI is famous among the largest - perhaps the capitol of - the jewelry industry. The Providence Jewels or Providence Diamonds (nice baseball tie in) would be neat. The state bird is the Rhode Island Red, a rooster. They used to have an AHL team called the Providence Reds.

You definitely must use New Orleans Jazz. That is a cool name. I hate when teams move and take the nickname with them. (NBA Utah Jazz).

Fun idea.

Personally I love the idea of the Indianapolis Racers or Indianapolis Checkers, even the Indianapolis 500's has a ring.

St. Louis Archers would be cool.

Louisville is the home of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat, so the Louisville RiverBats, not an original name, would be appropriate, even the Louisville Sluggers would work. But not the Colts. . . Indy owns that name now!

P.S. Are you a Plymouth Pilgrim or a Triton Trojan? I'm a former Warsaw Tiger!

The team from Buffalo should be called the Stance.

Hey - it makes me chuckle!

What about Memphis Blues to go with the New Orleans Jazz?

Cincinnati has the nickname of "Porkopolis," so how about the Hogs?

Some more good ideas (Buffalo Soldiers, lol).

I've had to rule out some for historical reasons (the arch wasn't built in ST. Louis yet, Prohibition had just started there), but I'm getting a good list going. I'm a little stumped on Atlanta right now. I'm thinking of going with the N.O. Jazz, the Birmingham Rebels, the Memphis Showboats, and I'd like an Atlanta team that goes along with that vibe, they'll be kind of the edgy division, but I haven't got much good for Atlanta at all.

Anyone have any ideas for Richmond, VA? Or for that matter, New York? I don't have one I really love for New York yet. Cincinnati and Indianapolis, Minneapolis are all pretty scarce too.

Thanks for all the help. This is fun just coming up with the league. I was thinking origiinally of just quicksimming through a couple decades to build up history, but it might be fun to play from the start.

The Atlanta Fire

Cuz Sherman burned it down.

Probably wouldn't be appreciated down here mind you, but it'd be funny as hell.

Beargrowlz with his civil war reference made me think of the Richmond Grays, a Virginia militia regiment.

And for New York, about the NY Football Yankees? (going old school, but with a twist...)
