Bowl Bound College Football

I've really gotten into the TCY Dynasty I have been writing and think it would be awesome to be able to play a college football game that has multiplayer.

Anyone know anything about Bowl Bound?

Is it any good?

How is it single player?

And multiplayer?

Is it full screen only?

Any other info you have might help me decide whether to buy it or not.

Thanks in advance!

It's the best college football sim on the market. For some reason I just couldn't get into TCY, despite loving all college sims, because it was too much work, but BBCF is much more modern and, IMO at least, a lot more fun.

While I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying it, I feel exactly the opposite of Groundhog. Though it is much more feature-rich, there's always been something about BBCF that's prevented me from getting into it.

The initial release was very shaky, but the support has been tremendous and it's much better now than I ever would have thought it could be. I love TCY, and I consider this game a worthy succesor.

I played more of BBCF in the first week than ALL of the TCY and I bought TCY the first day it was out. Just no fun for me. Recruit-athon....ugh. Highly recommend BBCF.

I higly recomend it, one of my favorite sims, specially after the patches. I think that the bugs it had on release made it really undervaluated, but it's an awesome game.

I think the polls in TCY are still much better than the ones in BBCF, though.

They have gotten better with the patches, but you still see some things that make you scratch your head.

True dat.

The polls are the main reason why I stopped playing long ago. You work your ass off trying to build up a program, but if you're not in a BCS conference, 6-5 teams (and 5-6 teams sometimes) are always ranked in the top 25 ahead of you, unless you're undefeated. It got real frustrating to get to a point where you knew your team was good enough to compete in the top 25 - even beating some of the national powers during the season - but not see that accurately reflected in the polls.

BBCF was patched a few times - with "improving poll logic" being in the list of improvements - but in reality they only went from "terrible" to "bad". The last patch or 2 may have improved on them further, but I lost confidence in them and never went back to the game.

I got my money out of the game, though, but barely.

I've been very impressed with the latest 1.52 patch. I haven't seen any missing commentary in the game logs, defenses actually seem to have an effect on the game now, option attacks now have the correct run/pass balance, and the polls, while no means perfect, are light years better. Also added were in-season recruiting visits, as well as a recruit tracking piece, so you can easily see who had the best recruiting classes historically. We are only four games into the season in the fofc-bbcf league, but if you want to see tangible changes, check out the stats on the league website.

Personal opinion here, but it is my 2nd favorite text simmulation. Football Manager the first, then Bowl Bound being the second.

But, it is best football simmulation in my opinion.

Hmm. I'm jonesing for a good college football sim (I've reached my tolerance for the things that piss me off in TCY) so I might have to give the demo another try and see if I feel differently about it this time.

So I decided to download the BBCF demo and take it for another spin today. Things were going OK (i.e. I could see myself spending the money for the full-version to satisfy my college football jones) until about 30 minutes ago when, in the middle of recruiting, the game simply stopped doing anything. I double-clicked on a recruit, set my recruiting pitch and got the dialog box asking if I was sure I wanted to make the above recruiting actions and pitch to that player (yes or no) and that's where we stand - clicking on either the yes or no button makes them highlight, but it doesn't do anything, and I can't get rid of the dialog box and do anything else. Soooo, that scratches that purchasing impulse...

C'mon Jim, give up on your spammed poll, check the results of the poll here that can't be easily spammed and take the overwhelming advice here to do TCY2.

Wow, a game has an error and that makes your decision in purchasing the game. I bet your gaming library is rather small.

Sounds like your display didn't refresh properly. 99% of the time, simply minimizing and bring back up the display would have fixed it. Also, with the hot keys, you could have clicked the 'Y' or 'N' buttons to close it.

When I'm already on the fence about a game and a demo has a bug that hangs the game, yeah - I'm going to be pretty gun-shy about buying it.

Great game, IMO, and very "underrated". As others as said, multiplayer is very well done, and a lot of fun.

So, Mizzou B-Ball Fan : Sony is like MizzouRah : BBCF?

Look, I'm not trying to bash Arlie - I've bought his games before (TDCB) and like a number of things about them. I may still decide to buy BBCF. But there are things about how his games work that don't quite jibe with me in the same way that Jim's games do. And while I was having some mild amusement with the BBCF demo, you'd have to admit you'd get frustrated too if after spending a few hours going through the demo to see if you liked the game enough to buy you get to one of the most critical aspects (recruiting) only to find the game not responding to any input.

Thanks Arlie. I got a new monitor recently, and I've noticed some periodic display issues with Excel that minimizing seems to fix, so this wouldn't be the first app that has this issue on this monitor. I suppose a right-click "Refresh" on the desktop might also correct this?

Yeah, I'd first try the shortcuts as they should work either way. But, if that doesn't work a refresh of the desktop or min-restore should do the trick.

Well, I finished the demo and have to say I was pretty impressed. So I bought the game.

I still think I like TCY better (though the tedium of setting player schedules stinks and if you let your assistants handle it you always end up losing players academically, but that's another story), but multiplayer sold me on it.

And it seems to be a pretty game, with a lot of depth.

Thanks for all the advice.

I play single player every so often. It can be fun but yes, multiplayer is amazing. Now you can sign up for the FOFC-BBCF.
