There is something seriously wrong with society when Anna N. Smith headlines every

fucking channel

God damn! If there wasn't a fucking war in Iraq or if America wasn't under attack by Islamic extremeists maybe I could see some B- level celebrity headlining all the news shows, but no. Not only do we have the two aforementioned problem, but the globe is warming, and other crisis' impending, and Greta is fucking interviewing some barely English literate moron!

It wouldn't be so funny, but as I turned to CNN Cooper is interviewing a similiar barely literate German moron who is discussing who is the father of this baby! Who the fuck cares! Billions are being squandered in Iraq, we are supporting a totally corrupt goverment there, and continually throwing away the lives of out troops while our top experts discuss Anna's cardiology vascuity and toxicological results

And if that weren' enough, I turn it to MSNBC for some real news, and they are talking about Anna's drug addication! Granted, that fucking cigarette addict drives me fucking crazy with her man voice, but where the fuck can I get some real news!?

One of my friends complained about this earlier. I don't know that I think it matters. Or that it's a big news flash that the mainstream media gravitates to the stories that don't really matter.

They gravitate towards whatever sells. And the american public is so stupid and so ignorant, that talk of an ex-playboy married 90 year old, turned drug addict with a fucked up son and illigitmate child is what sells.

Is it any wonder the leading presdential candiate is a clueless one half term senator? Face it, this country is fucked, its to late to try and salvage what is left. The Republic has fallen!!! :devils advocate: Why not engross ourselves in football and celebrity stories? At least it eases the pain of what is really going on.

CNN isn't a public service, the idea is to get people to watch.

Let me say it again.... Lighten up Francis!!!!

I think you need a serious dose of vallium right about now. Where the hell have you been that celebrity (even quasi-celebrity) news being a headline comes as a surprise to you?

Hell, I was in India for a month and the biggest headline there for a while was that some Indian star on the UK Big Brother first had to deal with some sort of racist comments and than it was that she won the thing. So guess what.... it happens and not just in the US.

That's the problem, it doesn't surprise me. The point is that this country and the world are in such a fucked up situation because of the American media.

It's the gullible idiots like you (no offense) that keep digesting and regurgitating the pointless filth that they publish that creates this problem in the first place. Who the fuck cares about a Big Brother contestant?!?! It's a god damned worthless fantasy show.

Stop purchashing it. Stop consuming it, Stop talking about it. Lets discuss the things that matter.

I honestly don't know how "gullible idiots like you" and "no offense" can be included in the same statement.

You just have no point. This is the not the forum to rage against the machine. You're a giant nerd who plays a text football sim, just like the rest of us. We'll spend hours thinking about fictional players and debating "what better," and you want to crash in here like society is on the fast-track to hell and we need to talk about what's *really important.* Really important, on this board?

Get a little fucking perspective.

American media? It's all mainstream media. It was not American media in India, it was Indian media all over the Big Brother thing.

Idiots like me? For what, not paying attention to it when it's on? If you want to call someone an idiot you may start by looking in the mirror. I see it and ignore it, you seem to choose to have a little girl bitch fest about it.

Stop purchasing it? I purchance nothing that has stupid fluff crap like that. But where is the line drawn? I purchase sports magazines, on the overall picture how much does that matter? You are opening up Pandora's box if you choose to go down this path. Stop consuming it? Read previous. Stop talking about it? Uh, this was your fucking thread, again go look in that mirror. Let's discuss things that matter? Again, this is your fucking thread so look in the mirror when you say that.

Media is like any other business, it is about getting people talking and guess what.... you are talking about it. You have now added to the hits received if you search the web for Anna Nicole Smith. You have added to the reason that stuff like that shows up in media (in a small sense).

I merely said for you to lighten up, I should now change that to Lighten the Fuck Up!!!

:chill pill: take 2 of these, get laid and call me in the morning.

i turned of the news because all they were talking about was the blond bimbo. i dont know why the media is obsessed with her, i know nobody that cares about her.

the media said it themselves, normally when a celebrity dies you get fans making a makeshift memorial at thier death site with tons of flowers ect. there isnt any such thing where she died, its like the only people that cared about her was the media and thier facination with her.

I think amdaily maybe let himself get a little too worked up over this, but I basically agree with his premise.

I posted something similar in the cure for cancer thread, but the country (and world) as a whole have really wacked out priorities. I'm guilty too, we all are, but there are so many more important things for us to focus our energies on than ANS.

My disgust with the whole ANS thing is that the 'news' shows are bastardizing themselves and turning into E or Extra or something like that. Yes, they're doing it for ratings, but I feel that in the long term they are hurting themselves. They now have a watered down product. What are CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC? Are they news channels or variety/talk channels - kind of like all day versions of the Today show?

I just wish that the news channels stuck with what they are good at and leave the fluff crap like this to E. Give us a choice - every channel doesn't have to be the same.

I also wanted to express my amazement that she is getting all this press in the first place.

She was like a D-list celebrity along the lines of Andy Dick. Who in the world is watching the wall to wall coverage of her?

Count me on the side of being surprised that the coverage has bothered some of you this much. This is par for the course. I am curious how many people watched CNN, MSNBC, FOX et al. last night and when was the last time those same people watched these news channels on a Friday night for the serious news.

I think this may be the best place to say that the only place I have even heard that she died was FOFC (I generally stay away from TV news and the like). I seriously have not heard it anywhere else.

I think the media has no real context. Someone who is famous(for whatever reason) dies, there is always media coverage. Just this time around no one really cares and the media is going through the motions. Don't worry, some celebrity will adopt another 3rd world child in a couple of days and the news will switch and cover that.

Same here. I can see how it happens, this out-of-proportion interest the mainstream media, and the public, has in her death. I just wish I lived in a country (world?) where the media, and the public, considered the deaths of, say, those serving in Iraq & Afghanistan, as worthy of attention.

I'm not sure it's all that "out of proportion", not at least in the sense that there was considerable interest in her while she was alive too. Not majority interest perhaps, and not to the degree that her death became headline material, but still substantial in a "the show only has a million viewers but that's still a million more than most people get" sort of way.

Seems to me that there's a better argument for that interest being of questionable proportion than there is about her death.

I mean, think about it a minute, of all the reactions here at FOFC, there weren't many people that said "who ?" when her name came up. And I seriously doubt there would be a high percentage of people here who watched her show regularly, and those who had seen it strike me as likely to have only watched out of a desire to find something to mock/laugh about/etc. But we still knew who she was, at least well enough to have formed some vague impression of her.

Further, it's not as though the time spent on her death is bumping anything particularly useful out of the spotlight. Seriously.

I can't imagine I'd get much argument here if I say "well, FNC would only have been slanting or lying about {insert topic here} anyway". And those few here who would take exception to that wouldn't grieve if I instead said "well, CNN/CBS/et al would have only been slanting or lying about {insert topic here} anyway".

Now if you want to argue that it doesn't have to be that way "if only somebody would just present the facts & not spin them", then I'd strongly suggest two things: 1) it wouldn't matter to any significant degree, nobody would be watching it anyway ... and 2) you might as well be wishing for a unicorn to fly over & drop tax-free Krugerands out of its ass, because there's always some spin in media coverage, and pretty much always has been as far as I can tell.

When you take all that into consideration the coverage of her death really doesn't seem all that odd, or even disturbing, to me. It's not like it's replacing anything that would have served much more positive purpose anyway.

The great media interest over ANS is more than just her death, it's the story around it. It's like a real-life mystery/drama. You got the death of billionaire husband, a court battle over nearly a half-billion dollar estate, the death of her son, a lawyer who she "married", and the birth of her baby with a lot of different claims as to who the father is.

And apparently her mother went on TV, after the death of the son, pleading for Anna Nicole Smith to be careful with her associations because she might be next. I can see why this would be a big play on the 24 hour news channels.

Jeez, from reading some of this, you'd think that television news actually meant something these days. I'm not old enough to comment on the industry some 20, 30, 40+ years ago, but at this point, it's not much more than some news producer's outlet to polarize people and get them riled up.

Judging from the start of this thread, it's working. Again.

Personally I have always been fascinated by ANS.
I, for the life of me, can not figure of how she made it into Playboy, let alone continued to be famous.
But somehow she managed it, like an ongoing car wreck.
It must be an inspiration to dumb blonds with big fake tits everywhere.

How could this not be a big story to a generation raised on "Days of Our Lives."

She came from a humble Texas trailer trash beginning to be a glamorous Centerfold, PMOY, and Jeans Model.
Then trumped it, by gold digging an 80 year old billionaire, with the nasty ongoing estate fight.
Add her sons suicide and her own mysterious death.
Her Illegitimate child with every creep, up to and including Za Za Gabor's husband, trying to get their name on the meal ticket.
This is truly a "truth is stranger then fiction" store.
Oh yeah, there was some sort of reality show in there some where.

Fascinating high drama and mystery.

Now what I do not under stand is the media fixation on Princes Diane

There's more to life than the most important things. Every time there's a research study about the effects of various colors of rooms on mood or a Congressional push to regulate steroids in MLB, or a human interest news story there's always someone to whine, "Isn't there something more important they can be doing". Sure there is. We all could be doing something more productive. But what kind of life is that? Do we really need 24/7 Iraq coverage on CNN?

Two things: First, it reads like the perfect plotline to any daytime/nighttime soap opera/tv movie, and Second, her story no doubt will become a tv movie within 1 year.

Like why you started this thread?

Oh, I guess it matters to you!

Actually, if you read that second sentence, its a pretty intriguing story...
