Exploding glass, or why electric stoves suck.

So I'm in a new apartment and have my first electric stove.

I put a kettle of water on to make some instant oatmeal and leave the kitchen for a couple minutes...

BOOM!

The unmistakable sound of breaking glass came from the kitchen. It turns out I turned on the front burner instead of the back. On that burner had been a pyrex glass baking dish, which was now all over the kitchen and what was left on the stove was on fire. Oops...

I have to admit that the amount of glass around my kitchen is quite impressive!

Shouldn't this thread title be changed to reflect the fact that it's your burner location detection that sucks?

I thought of that too... 2 inch shards of glass propelled by an explosion would be a terrible start to my day.

Sounds to me like you shouldn't be playing with appliances.........

Maybe you should start with like, an Easy-Bake oven, then work your way up to the bigger appliances.

Wait, they make baking dishes which not only explode when heated, but actually catch fire?

When brought into direct contact with a 350 degree heating element, any number of things will explode.

I believe the fire was from the unwashed fish grease...

Actually, it's worse than that. I had a candle holder made of glass/pyrex (for the short candles that sit down in the holder). Now, again, I repeat that the holder was made for HOLDING short little candles in them. Can I say that again?

Ok, after power failure, candle is used in bathroom for illumination. After no more than about an hour, candle holder explodes (in similar fashion to baking dish above) sending glass shrapnel all over bathroom. Thankfully, no one was in bathroom (especially using the main appliance) at the time.

In Jr. High cooking class once after we cleaned up our kitchens and before we went back to our seats I placed a paper towel on a burner and turned the burner on low. Great fun!

Yeah... Pyrex bakeware & tealights... I can be such a girly-man sometimes.

I even make my own candles (mostly due to my own cheapness... you can melt & reuse the wax from old candles!)

Mrs. Leafs had one of those. She put a candle in it, lit it, and put it down on top of the new TV. You know, the plastic part of the top of the new TV. The part that's above the picture tube and other components.

She has a degree in biotechnology, but apparently she was sick the day they taught the lesson about plastic melting.

So what was the end result... another new tv?

No, luckily there was a metal bar that ran above the picture tube and the candle landed on that. I was able to run over and put the fire out and clean up the broken glass before anything really got inside.

So instead, I got a TV with a built in beer holder on top.
