360 versus PS3 on a 720p TV
Would there be a major difference? I've asked EaglesFan already but thought I'd ask what others think. It seems like a PS3 would be the bet if you had 1080p but at 720p, I wonder if there is a major difference between the two.
A follow up would be whether an HDMI 360 (if one came out) would be much better than the component version currently out. |

I have a 720p Samsung DLP, and also have both a PS3 and Xbox360- I can notice a difference. The PS3 has such a crisp image. Maybe it is has something to do with the games I've played on the 360 vs the PS3 but the PS3 looks noticably better. Movies also look much better on the blu-ray.

Which one do you like better? I've tormented myself and my wife about this decision hoping to make the right one. Just seems like the 360 has so much going for it and PS3 is so far behind they might not catch up. Seems the 360 just has some really great games on it. |

I guess it really depends what you're going to use it for. Right now the 360 has a lot more games...but that is simply because it has been out for a while now. I got the 360 not long after they were released and there were not that many great games at the time either. The PS3 has some really great features the xbox doesn't have, while the xbox has better online capabilities. If you are big into online games the 360 is the way to go, if you want a lot of games right away again the 360. If you want the best possible picture go with the ps3. I think once the PS3 gets more games it will be better than the 360. Either way is a good choice, the one definate advantage is price- and the 360 wins there. If I could only have 1, I'd keep my 360 simply for the games.

Man do you have a lot of questions, go buy a system will ya! ![]() Oh... and google is your friend. I mean, it would be rare to find many people on this forum who has both systems. Check out the gaming sites, like the one above who compared games. Last edited by MizzouRah : 02-12-2007 at 06:17 PM. |

720p games for the PS3 look great on a 720p TV. However, there are a lot of complaints about 1080p games for the PS3 on a 720p TV. It appears that the video scaling is currently done in software on the PS3. There are only a handful of games in 1080p on the PS3, but there will be more and more coming down the pike.
edit: also related to software video scaling, there are a lot of people disappointed in how PS2 games played on the PS3 look. The graphics they claim look much better when played natively on a PS2.

I thought most 720p TVs were also capable of producing a 1080i picture?
I ask because my current TV does 1080i, 720p and below.

Really, graphically who cares. Both the 360 and the PS3 look great. One might possibly be capable of displaying 0.001% more colour tones at a microscopic resolution, but at the end of the day the difference is only going to be noticeable to a) video geeks and b) people who use it in arguments to declare that x console is > than y.
Games are the important issue, and I'm sure they'll both stock up well in this department too, but right now xbox 360 is the winner, and there are some quality titles in the pipeline as well. I don't know much about the PS3 lineup of games, but that would be the area I'd research the most.

It depends on the type of TV. With a CRT, you are set, as it can natively display any resolution. With a lot of the LCDs, etc they have a specific native resolution that they look much better in (was 720, now they are all slowly switching to 1080). Any other resolution does scaling and may or may not look good.
