Random Question of the Day - 2/20/03

What is the most under-rated movie of all time?

I'm going to have to go with "Hamlet" starring Mel Gibson. Seriously.

Pulp Fiction, since it is not universally recognized as the best ever.

I think that Mel Gibson's Hamlet and The Changeling are both great choices. But I'll float out another one: Jaws.

Granted, it's well known for its shark and its startling scenes, but I think it's underrated as a great film. The interplay between Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw is simply outstanding.

Mel's Hamlet?? Really? Did you guys see Kenneth Branagh's version? It blows away Mel's version, IMO. It is very long and true to the play (the length - 4 hrs - may be a drawback for some, but not for me).

My vote for under-rated movie: Bedazzled. (The one with Liz Hurley and Brendan fraser). Probably my favorite dumb-comedy. Not my fave movie, but extremely under-rated.

Oh. And Vanilla Sky. Love this flick. But I may be biased because I just re-watched it last night.

Jaws? Outstanding movie. But I think it's pretty widely regarded as one of the best suspense movies ever. I wouldn't call that underrated.

Well.. I just re-read your post and I guess you mean that some elements are underrated because everyone just focuses on the suspense elements. Hmmmm...

Thinking it over....

Good, at least I am not the only one there. I think Remember the Titans is underrated, it is a great movie with a good story behind it.

Edit: Changed it all up...

The Truman Show - One of my favorite movies of all time.

Other nominations:
The Usual Suspects
Waterworld (everybody writes it off as horrible just because it was so expensive...it wasn't that bad a movie)
Goonies

To me, the most underrated movies are ones that require you to get the message to truly appreciate the film. I can think of a few off the top of my head.

Fight Club
Contact
187
Field of Dreams
American Psycho
American Beauty (won Oscars but people keep saying its overrated)

I thought Training Day was underrated. Two great actors who were recognized but actors can't carry a film by themself. I've never seen a movie capture the ugliness of L.A. quite like that movie and thought some of the production team got the sham.

Speaking of Denzell Washington, I think Remember the Titans is underrated. Just like people have mentioned Rudy, maybe critics have a problem giving a movie about sports its proper due.

IMO, Steven Spielberg is underrated too believe it or not. I believe he gets snubbed by film snobs because he makes a lot of "popcorn" big budget films but that doesn't mean he's not a genius.

Others that come to mind:
The Freshman
Groundhog Day
Reservoir Dogs (I'll take this over Pulp Fiction any day)
Tombstone
Three Amigos!
Leap of Faith
The Dead Pool

Glory...didn't even get nominated for best picture but in retrospect, it was much better then some of the other movies nominated that year. My all time favorite movie.
