The NFL Combine

What exactly is in it ?

I was reading another thread, and someone compared a QB bench press reps with an OL - and I thought "but they lift different weights" - then realized; I really don't know much about the combines.

Sooo, what exactly happens ?

they all lift 225 lbs, regardless of their position or weight.

they lift weights, get measured for the basics, run around and get timed, then go through some position-speicifc drills.

Bench press; 40-yard dash; broad jump; vertical jump; wonderlic test (intelligence) for all positions. It also includes an official measurement of height, weight, body fat, arm length, hand size, etc.

Then each position has specific drills. There are throwing drills, catching drills, 3-cone drills, blocking drills, kicking drills. These test basic agility, explosiveness, strength in a more football related activity for the relative positions.

I'm looking forward to watching the QB, RB, and WR's workout tomorrow (yes, I am already in football withdrawal.)

I can't wait to see what Johnnie Lee Higgins runs for his 40. He's the UTEP receiver that supposedly ran a 4.18 during spring ball before his junior year...

Personally, I'll be pretty damn happy if he runs a 4.35 or better.

Do the kickers do the bench press? Do some of them have problems even getting 1?

4.38. Looks like he made his goal of getting below 4.40.

I read on another board 4.38, 38-1/2 vertical and 10'7 jump. I think there's been one other RB faster, but I was surprised by how slow Marshawn Lynch's time was if what I saw is correct.

Who is broadcasting the NFL draft this year? I just saw a commercial for the NFL Draft coverage on the NFL network. Is ESPN out?

I thought ESPN's coverage was horrible. They kept missing selections to run these long winded storylines. Most fans watching the draft actually want live coverage of players being selected and player background stories later. I can't be the only one who would actually like to see live anouncements of player selections "and with the ......."

Last year both networks had coverage, I would assume the same for this year.

Looks like JLH redeemed himself at the UTEP Pro Day...

Higgins, decked out in his UTEP track uniform, ran times of 4.3 and a 4.34 seconds in the 40-yard dash, improving on his disappointing 4.48 at the combine. It was a relief to the native of Sweeny, Texas, whose stock dipped a bit after his Indianapolis effort.

Hopefully that moves him back up to the second round or so...

The NFL's offical time for both Peterson and Chris Henry (this is probably the back you were thinking of) at the combine is 4.40.

The NFL uses a digital time keeping method that scouts don't accept, so they still use stop watches (which is just stupid, imo). Thats why you see several different times for a player.

stop watches?! so if a scout clicks the button .3 seconds slow a players drops 2 rounds?
