Talking to a dude today at work and my parents told me that the guy is supposed to sleep on the side of the bed closest to the bedroom door (or the biggest chance of unlawful entry). My wife and I sleep that way. I sleep on the right side of the bed, closest to our bedroom door. Do you guys do that or not? Poll forthcoming.
Also, I was always told that the guy is supposed to sit in restaurants facing the door. |

I always sleep closest to the door when I'm sharing a bed with a girlfriend. I was always would tell a girlfriend that I get the "caveman spot". Our bed was against the wall, so it might have been a ploy just to be able to sneak out of bed without waking her.
If it's just a casual fling type of thing, I really could care less.

I dated a girl once who always wanted me to sleep on the door-side of the bed, sit on the seat next to the aisle, and stuff like that. I don't usually think of it automatically, and no girls I've dated before or since have ever mentioned it.

wow, the unlawful entry has never, ever occured to me. Ever since I've started living with my wife, we've always selected the side of the bed based on the which side is closest to a window, as we usually don't have AC in our houses up here so when it's too warm we sleep with the window open and she doesn't like having a breeze on here. Or in the winter, in really cold weather, the window side is a tiny bit colder than the side further from the window... FM

I absolutely sit facing the door in restaurants, and greatly prefer to have my back to a wall. I also walk closest to the street, and sleep closest to the bedroom door.

Uh, no. If some mofo comes in my bedroom, I don't want to get gunpowder residue on my wife.

I always sleep on the right side of the bed, regardless of where it is. Not sure why, that's just how we ended up. Feels strange at this point to sleep on the left side.

wow guess I'd never even thought of that or had to worry about it here in AZ I sit on the side I can see the TV in a restaurant. I currently sleep on the side closest to the door, but I was on the other side until we got new beadroom furniture and I wanted to be on the side closest to the dresser drawers as I wake up about an hour before my wife and I don't want to wake her getting my stuff out.

After living in the city for awhile, you do start to become aware of things like where exits in restaurants are. If not for self protection, then at least in case of fire or something.

Uhm, we've always slept on a certain side. In some houses I was closer to the door, in others she was.

I've also got to say, I'm surprised that so many people are constantly aware of exits, entrances, keeping their backs to walls etc. Maybe it's just from growing up in the areas that I have, but that kind of stuff never even enters my mind for a second. When I'm sitting in a restaurant all my attention is used up on ordering, waiting, or eating.

being aware of where the exit is and always having to be facing one are two different things to me. I do take notice of where the exits are, as you say, mostly in case of fire, but I have never felt the need to be on the lookout and be facing the door at all times. Maybe I'm just used to living in smaller cities (some would probably say towns) but I just don't see the need for it. Having this attitude toward protection reminds me of the far west and old western movies... ![]() FM

The door is facing the foot of the bed. So... uh... I sleep in whatever side my wife isn't sleeping at.
And in restaurants, I'll sit on whichever side of the table faces the televisions. ![]() |

My dad is one of those who always likes to be facing the door and have a wall at his back. I've never really cared myself and no women I've ever dated has seemed to care either.

I've always slept further from the door because my wife often gets up to go to the bathroom during the night - so it's closer for her.
And then when we had kids, it was closer for her to get up when they cried in the middle of the night . . . |

I sleep closest to the door but not to protect my wife if somebody enters but because she always want to sleep close to the windows and I don't care where as long as I sleep in a bed so i never complain.

I sleep next to the wall, because I'm big and I like the extra space of hanging a leg off the bed if I want to. Plus, when the kids come in to bug us, they totally have to go through my wife to get to me.

My wife and I have moved around quite a bit. If you are laying in bed I am on the leftside and it doesn't matter where the door is. Every place is different but I am always on the left.

Same here. Ever since we were married, my wife always prefers to be on the left side of the bed. In most of our places, this put me closer to the door. In our house, it puts her closer to the bedroom door. I never considered the safety concerns before seeing this thread. However, I almost always sit with my back to a wall and facing the entrance in a restaurant. |

I don't sleep closest to the door, but there's not much difference for us. The door is directly across the room from the bed.
I do all of those other things though. I will also make sure I am the person sitting in the emergency seat on an airplane. I doubt I'd survive a plane crash, but if I do, I'm not relying on someone else to get that door out of the way. |

I usually sleep closest to the window, since I like it to be cold more -- unless I have to get up super-early, in which case I sleep on the other side, closer to the alarm clock.

For now, I sleep on the side that is about a foot and a half from the wall.
And I usually pick my seat in restaurants based on where the TVs are, or which one provides the best "scenery". On sidewalks, I make my wife carry me. |

Likewise. I always sleep on the same side of the bed. In our current bedroom, it's the further from the door than my wife. As for restaurants, I perfer to sit facing the door/window, but don't make a big deal about it if I don't. In fact, I think most of the time I don't even really think about it.

I sleep on the side of the bed closest to the door. I also sit in a restaurant with my back to a wall. My wife isn't terribly observant so I like to have a view of the surroundings.
I have also read that guys should get into an elevator first just in case there is a problem with it, so I do that too. I guess I'm cautious by nature. |

I sleep on the left side of the bed. When we lived in our old apartment, I think this was because it was closer to the door. Now, because of the somewhat odd shape of our bedroom (there is a nook for the bed) it is probably equidistant or she is a bit closer.
