It was 70 years ago that the worst school disaster in US history occurred.
March 18, 1937.
Over 300 people were killed when a school in New London, TX exploded from a gas leak. This disaster is the reason that odor is added to natural gas and propane. There had been a leak, and the basement accumulated the gas. A piece of equipment was started in shop class, which ignited the gas causing a massive explosion.
