I'm a bit bummed out
I've had a great time with my mother visiting the last 5 days, but she is currently getting ready for me to take her to the airport in a few hours. The time has flown by much too quickly and since we are 1500 miles away, I probably won't see her again for 6 months or a year (even though I'd fly her down here anytime she wants to come.) As she continues to get older and due to a history of heart problems, I realize that I should not take spending time with her for granted. I can't wait until she is ready to retire and I can hopefully convince her to move closer. As an aside, Cirque's Delirium is an excellent show, we saw that Thursday night and had an excellent time.

It'll be sad to be apart from her for that amount of time - but try and look on the bright side and be happy that you have such a good relationship with her ...

Your post makes me miss my mom, and she only lives an hour away from me.

My parents live close by and visit far too much. There's got to be a happy medium distance-wise where they visit just often enough without driving you crazy but often enought that you don't miss them too much.

Ya, you're only sad because of something good, which you have to keep in perspective.
For me and my parents, I would consider a distance of 1,500 miles a "good start". |

I'm glad you can have these feelings.
My parents make life hard and provide too much drama. |

I'm torn between wishing that my parents lived, say, 10 minutes away, so that they could see their grandkids every week, and wishing that they lived, say, a two-hour drive away, so that they could see them every month, but without being a weekly presence.
Right now it's a 5-hour drive, so we see them twice a year.

I think 1-2 hours is perfect. Far enough away that it won't be all the time but close enough that you can get there quickly.

I hear ya doc.
My family is in NJ and I miss them often My dad is 76 and starting to break down a bit. Last time home I got strep throat and couldn't even visit them because my sister and her 3 kids live there and I couldn't risk getting them sick. |

My parents are in NC and I'm in CT. I really wish they lived closer. I always pictured our relationship going like it was with my Dad's parents, who we usually saw each Sunday. Now I see them a couple times a year. It's a bummer...

I thought this post was going to be about DIVISION ONE FOOTBALL!!!!!!
But seriously, I'm very lucky to spend the time I do with my parents just living less than a mile away. But, when I moved away with my family from California where my grandparents live, I got to spend about that much time with them. I think I took it for granted when I was there and a bit younger even when I left. But, my mom took it pretty hard when we moved away. |

I'm really bummed out about not seeing my grandma. I was lucky enough to see my dad's parents before they passed, but it's been way too long since I've seen my mom's mom. She "knows" her time is coming and wants to move to her hometown which really bums me out. Her thoughts alone might bring her to death quicker if that makes any sense.

Definitely, I'm very thankful to have a good relationship with her. She made it home safely, and has now flown down here twice in the last year. Those were her first two times flying in her entire life. She is already talking about doing it again in the future. I'm glad she finally is over her fear of flying enough to visit. |

That's really cool, EF. Most of the time, I'm quite thankful that my parents are so close--an hour away from me. However, sometimes it's really a nuisance that I'm the "close" kid (the other two siblings living in Indiana and Arkansas). ![]() /tk

I know what you mean....it is priceless to have such a close relationship. My Grandmother was the person for me and I miss her every day still (passed away 2 1/2 years ago)
Cherish every moment and get her down (or visit her) as much as you can.......My Grandmother never got to meet my current Wife, because I kept putting it off until it was a "better" time to go see her......One of the few big regrets of my life. Last edited by BYU 14 : 04-02-2007 at 08:11 PM. |

That's great news EF! Because of you and how I forgot to call her this weekend, I rode my motorcycle over to see her tongiht. Too bad she had a hair appointment. What's with women and their 4 hour hair appointments? ![]() |
