FOF2k7 eNFL: Denver Broncos: Culture of Losing

The eNFL version of the Denver Broncos 2003-1014 (before my arrival)

The Denver Broncos started off in the eNFL finishing 6-10 in 2003. This season would set the standard for the Denver Broncos.

2003: 6-10
2004: 12-4 - Lost to KC in the 1st round (was 0-3 vs. KC that season)
2005: 8-7-1 - Won 1st round vs. Balt, lost 2nd round vs. KC (0-3 again against KC)
2006: 4-12
2007: 4-12
2008: 9-7 (missed playoffs)
2009: 8-8
2010: 11-5 - Lost 1st round vs. Buffalo
2011: 6-10
2012: 6-9-1
2013: 5-11
2014: 5-11

12 seasons, 4 winning seasons, 3 playoff appearances with a 1-3 record in the playoffs. Not exactly Arizona "Culture of Losing", but not a good history.

Enter sabotai (in the last few weeks of 2014). I GM'ed the New York Giants in the eNFL for the first several years of the league's history, taking them to the playoffs almost every year, although the Super Bowl eluded me every time.

I have returned, to take the Denver Broncos out of the basement.

The 2015 season in review

Most first season with the Broncos was not a very good one. I inherted a team that could best be described as "abysmal". The offensive line was stacked, and a veteran QB with "red bars" that far exceeded what his stats told. An RB that was simply average. No fullback worth anything. No TE worth anything. Marginal receivers, at best.

On defense, not good either. We had on of the league's best cover CBs in Sammie Wright, who was entering his 9th year. We had one quality DE, a run stopper. A pretty good DT named Luther Western. A decent WLB, Bernad Ragon, who can pass rush, but can't stop the run to save his life. No MLB, no SLB. Half of a defensive line and one CB in the defensive backfield that was any good.

I had my work cut out for me

Free Agency: I don't recall making any major signings. Most of the eNFL owners, and this goes back to the beginning of the league, have always been good at keeping their players, and using the ones they didn't want to keep/counldn't keep as trade fodder. FA every year seems to be scarce.

Here's how my draft went:

1 (3) - LDE Jumbo Bernard - should turn out to be a stud
3 (5) - FL Winfred Frederick
3 (14) - SE J.B. Guthrie
4 (5) - SLB Larry Girth
5 (5) - FS Rondell Powell
7 (5) - CB Drew Stewert

Trading: I make one trade. I received RB Bryce Kennedy for my 2016 1st round, 1016 3rd round and RB Irv Watson. Watson was my starter, only because we was slightly better than the rest of my very average backs.

Bryce Kennedy had just finished his 2nd year with the 49ers and was holding out. The SF owner wanted to dump him instead of paying him. Had he been older, I wouldn't have made such a deal, but since he was only entering his 3rd year, I was getting someone who could be with my team for a decade.

In his two years with SF, he rushed for 1350 in 2013 and 1739 in 2014, with 22 TD runs combined. He also caught 25 catches in 2013 and 43 catches in 20014 with 3 TD receptions in both years and over 10 yards per catch in both. I felt I was getting a superstar.

Our QB, Ronnie Bullock, was once a really good QB, but has fallen. His attributes were high, but so were his interceptions. 24 INTs in 1013, and 27 INTs in 2014.

Our season started off well. After week 7, we were 3-3, with only 1 lose not being competative (a 37-14 lose to Chicago). Had a few things gone our way, we could have been 4-2 or even 5-1, but we're Denver, things don't go our way. Bryce Kennedy got hurt and would miss much of the rest of the season.

We lose our next 5 games, and finish the year at 6-10.

QB Ronnie Bullock was 291/521, 55.9 Cmp%, 3573 yards, 23 TDs, 19 INTs and a 76.7 QB Rating. One bright spot, only 18 sacks. This was actually his best season since 2011. He's starting to get up there in age. I think he could be a really good QB, however, he does not have the cast of characters around him. My WRs stink, I have no TE. Bryce Kennedy is great at receiving, but I need more than just a Mashell Faulk to make my offense work. I need a few Issac Holts as well.

Kennedy only got to play 9 games for us, and he rushed for 570 yards on 162 carries and 8 TDs. He also caught 34 catches for 350 yards and 2 TDs.

How did my draft picks work out? Bernard is still on his way to being a stud (41/87). He started the season and had 4.5 sacks and 36 tackles. He'll get there.

WR Guthrie was a total bust, while Winfred Frederick (24/42) got some playing time. 40 receptions for 641 yards and 4 TDs. He'll probably start for me next season.

SLB Larry Girth (13/31) doesn't look to be panning out. Might turn into a 'decent' backup, if he fulfills his potential, which he hasn't been doing at all.

FS Rondell Powell (27/41) has turned into a nice pick for me. While his Run Defense (21) is not great, he is a free safety so I don't really care much. I would like his Interceptions to be...anything (0/15), but other than that, he has really good bars. 29/68 M2M, 46/73 Zone, 26/55 B&R, 58/76 Play Diagnosis. He won't be a turnover generator, but he'll be a very reliable pass defender. Although Matthew Makowski, my other FS, is slightly better with a higher INT rating, Powell will see a lot of playing time as my Nickel back most likely.

CB Drew Stewart (13/31) will be gone soon. He has one good rating (M2M: 34/67), but nothing I can use. For Nickel and Dime backs, I want Zone and B&R, not Man.

And so ended our 2015 season.

2016 Offseason

Retired
S Tank Williams
G Eric Steinback
TE Lawrence Brewer
DT Bernie Lucas

As with previous eNFL offseasons, the FA market was dry. Only a few players were worth going after, and they were OLD. WR Tyrone Calico was a superstar, but he was also going into his 14th year. Irving Judge was another great WR, he was going into his 13th year. QB Tom Brady, his 16th season.

But there were a few guys there. TE Joe Clements (60/60) would have been a great signing, but he didn't come cheap. I did send an offer, but when I got outbidded, I decided it wasn't worth it for a TE (To cross the 4th wall a bit, I wanted Clements for his high blocking ability, but I am unsure as to how much the TE blocking really effects rushing and pass protection in FOF, so I decided to not offer a higher contract). He ended up singing a $30mil, 4 year deal with KC.

WR Blake McKenzie
(46/46) was another guy I targeted, as he was only going into his 5th year, but he ended up signing a $9.10 million/ 1 year deal with Atlanta that included a $8.1 million signing bonus.

Now let's look at my signings

DT Leon Nader
(44/44) - $4 mil / 2 years. Decent Run Defense (53), decent pass rushing (49 Tech, 43 str). Can't diagnose a play at all. Signed to help the line because of Lucas' retirement

SILB Marcus Fisher
(32/41) - $7.5 mil / 3 years. I overpaid, but I desperately needed someone who had any amount of run defense (33/54) at the middle lineback position. The draft? A desert for MLBs. The answer was not there at all.

Purely a speculation pick. 92 Vol + pretty good (not great) combine numbers. Not much left in the draft that would do me any good. If he doesn't work out, I'm only paying 6th round money.

Guess I will follow this. As and old eNFL 49ers GM it will be interesting to see how you will go about taking down one of the most successful franchises in all of FOF MP history, yabanci and his Oakland Raiders.

Just finished the league's second perfect season, has won 3 out of the last 4 Super Bowls, and looking at the roster after the draft, it's still loaded with superstars. "Interesting" might turn out to be in that same way a horror movie is "interesting", although they are one of the oldest teams by average age.

But me and yabanci go way back. He traded me a damn good running back relatively cheaply when I was the GM of the Giants. So I got no hate for him.....not yet, anyway...

I cut WR Joel Fletcher as he was holding out. He started 13 games for me last season and caught 61 catches for 859 yards and 6 TDs. It was a pretty decent increase over his 2014 stats of 13 game starts, 43 rec., 524 yards and 3 TDs. His average yards per catch went up by 2 yards per reception.

However, he stinks. He's scouted as 35/35, and while I usually try to put more weight towards stats than red bars, I have 4 other WRs with similar attributes that I feel can step right in. I did not need him, nor did I think anyone would actually trade for him, so I just axed him.

Signings
SLB Phil Kirk, rookie, 19/31 ($420,000/1yr)

I still have a few undrafted rookie offers out there, but not many.

I end up not signing anymore players for the rest of Late FA

Training Camp

Luke Duffy finally signs after Training Camp.

A look at my rookies post-Training Camp

OLB Luke Duffy: 26/60 (from 26/67)
FB Mack Wheeler: 24/53 (from 23/59)
TE Sherman Clayton: 30/49 (from 28/53)
QB Drew Benson: 9/44 (from 8/54)
WR Wesley Hendon: 13/15 (from 11/11)
SS (moved from FS) Cris Thompkins: 29/50 (from 29/55)

Nothing too bad. A small drop in all players, except for my "speculative stock" Hendon who went up a few points in both current and future. Pretty happy with the draft overall. Glad I didn't have any total busts this year.

Nothing exicitng happened during pre-season. I didn't lose any players to injuries and we held out own against our opponents.

Time to get caught up. We are currently 4 weeks into the regular season.

* - Sorry for no commentary on the games. I just wanted to get these posted so I got caught up.

I am more than happy with the start of the season. We have started off 3-0, but I'm not getting ahead of myself. No disrespect to the teams I played, but I've played some of the lesser quality teams in my first 3 weeks. Indy is up in week 4,they are 1-2 right now (and they were 8-8 last year). We're favored to beat them this week. All of my really tough games come in the 2nd half of the season.

A great day for our special teams. Malone finally comes through for me on the punt return for a TD. The only reason he's on my roster is because of his punt return ability. Joe Joyner also had a great day, catching 1 TD (his only reception) and taking a kickoff 99 yards to the house!

Our defense really stepped it up as well. Our pass defense picked off Indy QB Mack Weiss 3 times, and then Allen McElroy, the backup, once. Sammie Wright got 2 of those picks.

We head into the bye week 4-0, 2 games up on Oakland and San Diego (both are 2-2)

Big day through the air for Bullock as he nearly gets to 250+ yards passing band completes 3 passes for touchdowns. Kennedy still hasn't had a big day this year, but I can't really complain since his rushes per game are in the teens. I have him set to 90% playing time, but he only got the ball 12 times. He still had 3 runs for 10 yards and 1 TD run.

Not too bad from our defense. Not good, but decent. They had 10 more rushing attempts, but only 1 more run for 10+ yards, so I guess we kept it managable. Held their passing attack decently. Gave up a couple of touchdown passes, but Wright came through for us with a pick with just under 3 minutes to play in the game.that allowed us to get the touchdown to put the game just out of reach for the Titans. They put up a hell of a fight at the end.

Add to that 1 pick, our defenders had 7 passes defensed. Also, while we only managed 1 sack, we also hurried their QB 5 times. It was a good "bend, don't break" game for our defense.

What a 4th quarter this game had.

We are now 5-0. We've already matched our win total from last season. It's about to get a lot harder as we face the AFC South leading Houston Texans. They are 5-1, they finished 11-5 last year, lost to the eventual Super Bowl winners (Oakland) in the playoffs, so this will be quite a test for us.

I didn't think I was going to win this game. Our D got pounded and our offense showed up only in spurts. We went 3 and out on every drive in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Kennedy had 14 rushes for 94 yards, 3 receptions for 22. Bullock was 13/34 on the day. Sacked twice, hurried 12 times, 8 passes were defensed. Add all that together and you get a very bad day for your quarterback.

We were only 2/13 on 3rd downs, while they went 10/18.

A nice, dominating performance. Kennedy gets a 100+ yard day on the ground and our defense snags 3 picks. Jumbo Bernard also had a good day with 1.5 sacks and 4 tackes (with 1 assist and 2 hurries).

A very close game against Kansas City that went neck and neck until the very end, when KC kicked the winning FG in the finla seconds.

Bullock had a great game, 331 yards passing, 3 TD with 1 INT. The problem was Kennedy couldn't get anything going on the ground. But that one INT by Bullock is what set KC up for their game winning FG. It happened deep in our own territory with around 5minutes left. That FG tied the game.

We drive and get a FG to again take the lead. With just one minute to go, they are forced to punt. We fumble the ball and KC kicks the game winner. We pretty much had the game won, but 2 late turnovers gave it to KC.

Another good win that gets us back in command of the division as Oakland, KC and San Diego all lost this week. We have a 2 game lead on Oakland with 4 games to play.

Our next 4 games are: Tampa Bay, at Oakland, at Atlanta, Kansas City

We improve to 9-4 ina very strong performance against Tampa Bay, a team that has had a very unfortunate season. We dominated on defense, holding them to 51 yards on offense. We got to their quarterback 9 times in this game, 4 from Jumbo Bernard (who also had 8 tackles in the game). CB Sammie Wright had a great game as well. He wasn't caught on once as he defended 4 passes and had 1 INT.

On offense, it was productive, but not great. Kennedy ran for 117 yards on 28 carries. Bullock threw 177 yards, going 19-29 with 3 TD passes but 2 INTs.

I'm not sure where this dominating performance from my defense came from, but hopefully this defense shows up for next week's game vs. Oakland (who is now 7-6 since they won this week as well.)

Oakland still has our number. We couldn't do anything, except grab a few picks, one that went for a score. That was pretty much our only highlight.

In just about all scenarios, the Broncos got into the playoffs. We had the tie-breaker over San Diego and Indianapolis. The only uncertainty was a Buffalo win and a Denver lose. Well, we lost and Buffalo won. Buffalo is in the playoffs and we stay home ending the season on a 3 game losing streak.

Kennedy showed up this week, Bullock did not.

The 2016 Denver Broncos Season Review

Offense
Code:
Denver Broncos Team Rank Rushes per Game 27.8 17 Rushing Yards 123.0 8 Yards Per Carry 4.42 5 Pass Attempts 31.0 28 Completions 17.6 30 Completion Pct. 56.7 29 Passing Yards 204.9 20 Yards Per Attempt 6.61 15 Yards Per Catch 11.67 6 Total Yardage Gained 319.9 13 3rd Down Conversions 38.9 18 (T) Points Per Game 21.8 12 Pass Rush Pct. 13.3 21 Pass Defense Pct. 70.2 1 Turnovers 28 19 (T) Turnover Margin -1 13 (T)

We were 8th in rushing and 20th in passing, 13th overall offense. A nice average rating. Not sure what to make about being 1st in "Pass Defense Pct." on offense.

Defense
Code:
Opponents Team Rank Rushes per Game 30.4 28 Rushing Yards 131.3 30 Yards Per Carry 4.32 28 Pass Attempts 33.3 17 Completions 18.7 4 (T) Completion Pct. 56.1 2 Passing Yards 185.6 1 Yards Per Attempt 5.57 2 Yards Per Catch 9.93 3 Total Yardage Gained 300.8 9 (T) 3rd Down Conversions 40.2 21 Points Per Game 19.4 14 Pass Rush Pct. 19.8 32 Pass Defense Pct. 58.2 26 Turnovers 27 12

Our defense was 1st against the pass, 30th against the run and 9th overall. The reason for our 30th against the rush is our linebackers. Duffy was a rookie and should improve, our WLB is good in coverage and the blitz, but isn't very good against the run. Our MLB...well, that's my #1 priority. We have great cover corners, but they don't defend the run and that may contribute to our bad rushing defense as well.

Quarterbacks
Code:
Passing Pos Att Comp Yards Y/Att TD Int Rate 4 R. Bullock QB 495 280 3277 6.62 21 16 77.5 **Team --- 496 281 3279 6.61 21 16 77.5 $$Opp --- 533 299 2970 5.57 20 16 72.0

I was sure Bullock was our man but now I'm not too sure. He probably only has a few years left in him, since this was his 10th year, but I was hoping I could hold off on finding his permanent replacement. When he finished the season throwing 7 picks and 0 TDs in his final 3 games, I've decided the time is now. Despite great "bars", he just doesn't get the job done consistantly (He reminds me of Rex Grossman).

Rushing
Code:
Rushing Pos Att Yards Y/Att TD Fum 21 B. Kennedy RB 263 1145 4.35 6 6 46 P. Burleson RB 148 665 4.49 6 6 4 R. Bullock QB 34 158 4.65 1 5 **Team --- 445 1968 4.42 13 27 $$Opp --- 486 2100 4.32 10 26

Kennedy gets a 1000+ yards for the year. Due to having average receivers, I think my opponents were just lining up to stuff the run and letting Bullock shoot himself in the foot.

Receiving
Code:
Receiving Pos Targ Catch Yards Y/Ctc Y/Tar Drop TD 10 H. Cantrell WR 103 51 599 11.75 5.82 4 4 80 S. Clayton TE 50 40 397 9.93 7.94 0 6 83 W. Frederick WR 75 36 486 13.50 6.48 9 5 21 B. Kennedy RB 46 32 265 8.28 5.76 3 0 84 J. Joyner WR 66 32 499 15.59 7.56 6 2 89 W. Hendon WR 52 24 420 17.50 8.08 6 1 88 A. Ertmann WR 41 21 306 14.57 7.46 2 2

Clayton did well for his first season and he should only get better. Hendon, the guy with terrible bars but a damn good combine actually did pretty good for a 14/15 player. We'll see if he booms in a year or two. I'm hoping to find a way to get Kennedy in into the passing game a little bit more. I also need a big time receiver to help take the pressure off Kennedy and the running game.

Defense
Code:

Bernad was another player that faded in the last few games as he didn't get a single sack in the last 3 games. A bit surprised that Lindsay led my team in tackles despite missle some games due to injury. I guess that's a statement about how bad my rush defense was.

Wright did damn good with 6 INTs and a PDPct of 89.0, which was second highest in the league.

Going forward, I see a few things I desperately need to do for success next season
1) Find a MLB. All of my MLBs were terrible and I need a big time MLB.
2) I need a threat at receiver to help open up the offense.
3) Duffy (SLB) and Bernard (WLB) are the only two good LBs I have. I need depth at the LB position along with a starting MLB.
4) I only have one really good DT, another one to help close up the middle to the run would help a lot.

Looking to the future...
1) Bullock's replacement
