The scam was uncovered when Chinese basketball star Zhi Zhi Wang went on a talk-show and wondered why his new toy would not vibrate or let itself be petted.

He was crestfallen when told it was a kodiak bear.

Then hundreds of other people got in touch with police to say they feared their new "panda" was also a kodiak bear, though some later were found to only be stuffed teddy bears.

One couple said they became suspicious when they tried bamboo games with their "panda", only to have it attack them and rip them to shreds.

Chinese police believe there could be 2,000,000,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Nanjing and capitalised on the fact that pandas are now rare in China, so many do not know that there aren't enough to go around to be love toys.

"We launched an investigation after we were made aware that a company were selling other types of bears as pandas," Japanese police said, the The Xing reported.

"Sadly we think there is more than one company operating in this way.

"The kodiaks and teddys are believed to have been imported from overseas - Alaska, Taiwan."

Many of the kodiaks have now been traded to Russia for nukes and are currently riding unicycles. The Teddy bears were shot for being Taiwanese dissidents.

This story is totally unbelievable. If anyone is going to know what a Panda looks like, it's the Chinese.
