Simultaneous 46 and Goaline D's
What happens to your personnel if you run a 46 Defense and a Goalline Defense at the same time?
3-4/46/Goalline: 2 DE, 2 DT, 4 LB, 2 CB playing BnR, But 1 Deep Safety and 1 Safety in the box to stop the run. Need 12 players to run this. Who gets left out? 4-3/46/Goalline: 2 DE, 3 DT, 3 LB, 2 CB playing BnR, But need 1 safety deep zone and 1 safety in the box to stop the run. Again, need 12 players to run this. Who gets left out? Cheers.

The goalline packages do not include two safeties, according to the Depth Chart screen. I think your "1 Safety in the box to stop the run" in each line is superfluous.

That's logical. So the 2nd safety would come out, and the other safety would play deep. So the difference between a goalline and a 46 package is whether you want the extra defensive lineman to stop the run or the 2nd safety to stop the run. There doesn't seem to be any benefit to playing a goaline/46. Or is there? If you play a goalline 2 deep BnR (or 2 deep M2M for that matter), because one of your safeties is removed for the goalline package, does that place one of your two corners in deep zone coverage, defeating the purpose of the goalline to stop the run? Just thinking aloud at this point. Gaining a deeper understanding of defensive packages in this game is by far the most challenging aspect of the game. Cheers.

My guess (not a lot more than that) is that the CB assignemnts are pretty static. Your top CBs are lined up on the flanker and split end in pretty much every coverage. (Beats me what happens when the offense is piled up with fewer than two wideouts) I think it is the other defensive positions that get shuffled if there's a mismatrch between your personnel package and the formation you use. If you're in 2-deep and you only have one sfaty on the field, my guess is that a LB (perhaps the WLB) drops into that zone coverage in his place. Same thing (and I think this has actually been verified) if you run a 3-deep zone with only two safeties in the game -- your WLB drops into a deep zone. I don't find this very firm ground -- but that's my best guess on how the assignments work. |
