OT: The FOFC Sports Moments Draft - Voting Thread

This is the voting thread for the FOFC Sports Moment Draft, which can be found here:

Participants drafted "teams" of sports moments that could be associated to the following terms:
- Speed
- Power
- Controversy
- Drama
- Record-breaking
- Clutch
- Choke
- Emotion
- Upset
- Comeback

It was up to the participants to decide which moments would fit well within a specific category.

For a detailed definition of a "moment", see the original thread. The quick version is that the moment had to happen on the field, during a game, and be a short amount of time.

i voted lathum. his "clutch" moment was the only one that might be unknown to many (or at least to me), and his "power" moment some could see as iffy (but if you're ever seen those 2 big dudes you know that's some serious power). other than that, all of his things are pretty much what i think of when i think of the definition of those categories

Gave me a final 3 of:
1. sabotai
2. Maple Leafs
3. larrymcg421

I would expound more, but the scores say it all. Sabotai hit on a lot of my favorites, so he gets my vote.

I went for most complete package and for me it came down to digamma and Crapshoot, but digamma just barely edged out Crapshoot in the end.

I didn't notice that until after I'd cast my vote.

To me that's seriously bad form and I'd have changed my vote if I'd known.

Either you should vote for someone else or not at all in this kind of thing in my opinion.

It's not like you're running for office or anything.

in all seriousness, I thought everyone voted for their own team. I would have happily abstained.

I do like my own team. I also think sab, Maple Leafs and Schmidty put together good teams.

Sorry you feel slighted, Izulde, but glad to have your support.

This happens almost every draft. There was even one where somebody won by a single vote thanks to votes from themselves and their significant other.

I don't get it, but everyone is of course free to vote as they see fit.

In my defense, I was just going to not vote but then I saw half of the people voted for themselves, so I threw my vote in. I didn't notice Maple didn't vote for himself until afterwards.

I saw a bunch of people voted for themselves, and figured that I should to, but with all of the bitching about it in this thread, I feel semi-guilty now.

Here's an idea: Disregard all votes by draft participants when tallying the final votes.

I always wait to vote when I do one of these. if others are voting for themselves, i usually do, if they're not, I don't.

Interesting to see Bucc and Butter scoring this, thanks for taking the time to do it. I really can't believe the steal i got at 10.10, and its interesting to see the disparity in ratings on Bo Kimble's FT's for my emotion pick, and the Cubs 2003 playoff choke.

I think the emotion tied to Hank Gathers death for me had to do with my age, I was 13, over a few year period Hank Gathers dying, Magic Johnson announcing he had HIV, and Jim Valvano's cancer were kinda my introduction to the idea that my favorite people/heroes in sports weren't untouchable and immortal. I was lucky enough to avoid family tragedy/death until I was much older and looking back on Gathers/Magic/Jimmy V still bring back overwhelming emotions for me b/c the people whose lives I followed on TV were the closest things to me to have these bad things happen for a long time.

I think one of the biggest steals was the Hand of God at 1.6, and in any worldwide draft, it would have been a default number one consenus pick, and tangle got it low, imo. It's like drafting Michael Jordan with the sixth overall pick in an all time basketball draft.

I wasn't sure who to vote for in this, so decided to break down each category and determine who I thought did best in each with a similar scoring system to what others used. In effort to stir up conversation about some of the choices, here is what I based my vote on.

clutch
1 - Joe Carters walk off homerun game 6 1993 world series - Lathum
2 - "The Catch" - Joe Montana to Dwight Clark touchdown to win the NFC Championship for San Francisco- Radii
3 - Adam Vinatieri kicks a 45 yard FG in a snowstorm to tie the game vs. Oakland in the 2001 Playoffs - sabotai
4 - Luis Gonzalez singles off of Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth of game seven to win the 2001 World Series - Crapshoot
5.5 - Freshman Michael Jordan sinks a jumper with 15 seconds left to lift North Carolina over Georgetown in the NCAA Championship Game, 63-62 - digamma
5.5 - Christian Laettner's shot to beat Kentucky with 2.1 seconds to go in the NCAA Regional finals in 1992 - bsak16
7 - Jordan's "final shot" beats the Jazz to win his sixth title - Maple Leafs
8 - Adam Vinatieri kicks a field goal to win Super Bowl XXXVI - Schmidty
9 - Larry Bird's steal and pass to Dennis Johnson for the last second victory in the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals - larrymcg421
10 - David Beckham's free kick takes England to the 2002 World Cup - tanglewood

The #1, 2 and 3 picks all could have been #1 in my book probably. I can't tell you alot about Joe Carter's career, it doesn't stand out to me like many others did who played at the same time. Any time a discussion on whether or not there was such a thing as a "clutch" baseball player however, Joe Carter came out as the poster child.

If there was one moment in sports history that I could point to and say that is when my pain and agony started, it would be "The Catch". I doubt there are many people who don't remember the Sports Illustrated cover, and to this day every time I see it, I hurt inside. That play kickstarted a 49ers dynasty that would run all over my poor Falcons for a decade.

For #3 I chose the kick that to this point has been the defining moment in Adam Vinateri's career. some may wonder how you pick this kick as more clutch than the one that meant more in the following superbowl, but all things considered the kick against Oakland in the snow had a big part in setting into motion two different franchises moving in complete opposite directions. Oakland to abysmal failure, and the Patriots to being the most recent NFL dynasty.

choke
1 - Bill Buckner's error costs the Red Sox Game 6 of the 1986 World Series - sabotai
2 - Scott Norwood's missed FG at the end of the 1991 Super Bowl - Crapshoot
3 - Chris Webber calls a timeout he doesn't have in the 1993 NCAA Championship game - Schmidty
4 - Greg Norman hugs Nick Faldo after blowing a six-stroke lead in the final round of the 1996 Masters - Maple Leafs
5 - Florida State, Wide Right 1991 - larrymcg421
6 - Jean Van de Velde's second shot on the last hole of the 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie - tanglewood
7 - 1986 Western Conference Semifinals, Steve Smith scores the Series Clinching goal, for the wrong team - bsak16
8 - Andres Escobar scores and own goal in 1994 world cup, helping the USA win the game 2-1 and eliminate Columbia from the tournament - Lathum
9 - Roy "Wrong Way" Riegels picks up a fumble in the 1929 Rose Bowl and returns it 65 yards....the wrong direction - digamma
10 - Steve Bartman foul ball play begins the downfall of the 2003 Chicago Cubs - Radii

#1 here was easy to pick. The 2003 World Series win for the Red Sox may have helped remove more than just Babe Ruth's ghost. For many life long Sox fans, it removed the constant reminder of Bill Buckner letting the ball trickle between his legs from their mind. Every time the Red Sox would make it to the playoffs, that play was a reminder to them why they could not win the big game. It was not Buckner who missed that ball, it was Babe Ruth's ghost who pushed it through his legs!

I couldn't tell you who the kicker was for the giants that day, I even had to go back to look to see who the MVP of the superbowl was. (Otis Andersen if you were wondering). To this day, when you ask me about the 1990s Bills, the first thing that jumps out is Scott Norwood and "Wide Right". I guess it tells you something, when one of the three most known players of a team that went to 4 super bowls is a kicker who failed at his job. For everything that Adam Vinateri has done to be remembered for being "Clutch", Norwood did to be remembered as the goat.

I barely even remember much from the 2004 World Series. I know the Cardinals played (supposedly). I know the Red Sox won... however it almost seemed like that was already assumed to be the outcome after the Red Sox overcame the Yankees that year to win the ALCS. At the time it happened, I remember people constantly saying over and over that no one had ever come back from a 3-0 game deficit to win. This comeback is more than just that game 7 however, its more than just that ALCS.. this come back was #1 because it was a come back from the previous 80+ years of the Yankees beating the Red Sox when it mattered.

Emotion
1 - Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American to play in the MLB as he steps on the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers - bsak16
2 - Dale Earnhardt killed in crash on final lap of Daytona 500 - Lathum
3 - Dave Dravecky's arm snaps during a pitch, ending his comeback from cancer - Maple Leafs
4 - Bo Kimble Shoots his first free throw of the 1990 NCAA Tournament left handed in memory of Hank Gathers - Radii
5 - Jason McElwain, an autistic 17 year old senior hits his 6th 3-pointer as the game ends in his high school basketball team's last home game - sabotai

7 - Hail Mary! Doug Flutie to Gerard Phelan lifts BC over Miami - digamma
8 - Smarty Jones gets run down at the end of the Belmont Stakes - larrymcg421
9 - Aryton Senna's crash at Imola 1994 - tanglewood
10 - Joe Louis TKO's Max Schmeling - Crapshoot

Its hard to measure emotion of something that occured decades before I was born, something that I have never seen video footage of.. the reason why Jackie Robinson is #1 however is the emotion it still drives to this day.

Now I'm not a nascar fan, I've never even watched a race, but the day Dale Earnheardt died, even I knew who that was. I remember driving all around Atlanta and seeing those Red number 3s (and later Black number 3s) everywhere. In fact in all the years of Nascar, the only two racers I even knew the names of was Awesome Bill from Dawsonville and Dale Earnheardt. It almost seemed like that crash killed a family member for several hundred thousand fans.

#3 and #4 were both pretty close for me. I remember all of the feel good stories that came out about Dravecky's recovery, how we all waited to see him pitch, and then the horror that occured afterwards. To this day, I can still remember vividly him holding his arm with his other hand when everything fell apart for him.

10 - Solskjaer's injury time winner, Bayern Munich vs Manchester United 1999 Champion's League Final - tanglewood

I still don't like the yankees, but Don Larsen's performance was perhaps one of the best days anyone has ever had. Kirk Gibson was a strong choice as well, and I think could have done great in the Emotion field as well. I remember Kirk hobbling up to the plate and you just knew if he put the ball into play anywhere he was a goner. At that point Gibson was kind of like the girls in kickball that you used to have a substitute runner for after the kick the ball. You wanted to just look around and try to figure out why John Shelby wasn't there standing next to Gibson at the plate to take off running for him once he made contact. Gibson ended up putting the ball the one place he couldn't be thrown out however.

Upset
1 - "Do you believe in Miracles?", the final moments of the US/USSR 1980 Olympic hockey game - Maple Leafs
2 - James "Buster" Douglas knocks out Mike Tyson in the 10th round on Feb 11th, 1990 - sabotai
3 - Texas Western defeats KU in 1966 Champioship game - Lathum

8 - Ali KOs Foreman in The Rumble In The Jungle, 1974 - tanglewood
9 - NC State's Lorenzo Charles dunks the ball to win the 1983 NCAA Title game - Schmidty
10 - Final seconds tick down in Chaminade's 77-72 victory over Virginia - larrymcg421

#1 seems like a complete no brainer to me. To this day, if you asked most random people on the street who the U.S. beat in the gold medal round that year, they would say Russia, not even realizing that wasn't even the gold medal game. You would be hard stretched to find even non-sports fans who didn't know about that victory though. At the time, it wasn't only just a win for one hockey team over another, it was the "good guys" beating the "bad guys" when the cold war was at its peak.

I can still remember where I was when Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas. I still remember the Still photos shown on the news of it. At the time, there wasn't much that was a sure thing in life... Death, Taxes and Mike Tyson knocking the living snot out of anyone in under 2 minutes. The fact he lost was just unimaginable... and anyone who says they called that fight before hand is lying to you.

Record Breaking

9 - Cal Ripken celebrates with fans after breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak - Schmidty
10 - Nolan Ryan's 7th no hitter, at age 44 - the final out - Crapshoot

This was a tough field for me to figure out which were better. Do you reward more someone who had an entire career of dominance, or someone who had an outstanding season or game? In the end, the "biggest" record of my life, and one which unfortunatly looks like it will fall in the near future is the Home Run Record.

For #2 I had a tough time choosing between a record that boggles my mind and Gretsky's career reaching its highpoint. It probably can be said due to him the NHL really took off in the States

Speed
1 - Bo Jackson blows by the Seattle defense for a 91 yard TD Run on MNF - sabotai
2 - Michael Johnson's 19.32s in the 200m 1996 Olympic final - tanglewood
3 - Tony Dorsett breaks a 99 yard run on Monday Night Football vs the Minnesota Vikings in 1983 - Radii
4 - Secretariat down the stretch at the 1973 Belmont Stakes - digamma
5 - Affirmed defeats alydar in the 1978 Belmont to be the last horse to win the triple crown - Lathum
6 - Willy Mays over-the-shoulder catch in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series - Schmidty
7 - 1964 Olympics 10,000 meters, Billy Mills outkicks his rivals to win the Gold Medal - larrymcg421
8 - Rickey Henderson steals the 939th base of his career, one more than Lou Brock - bsak16
9 - Dave Roberts steals second base off Mariano Rivera to start the Red Sox comeback in game four of the 2004 ALCS - Maple Leafs
10 - Michael Owen scoring against Argentina - Crapshoot

I'm not really sure how you measure horse speed vs human speed. All I know is that Bo knows Speed. To this day I am still miffed that we never got to see what could have been. If only Bo had stayed healthy, it might have ended up being one of the greatest ever. Instead we are left only with the memory of him running over Bosworth , and this run where he kept running and running and running. Every time I see Forrest Gump, I think of the Bo Jackson run and just assume they stole that part of the movie from Bo.

8 - Reggie Jackson takes his 3rd swing in game 6 of the 1977 World Series and hits his 3rd home run - Radii

10 - Lance Armstrong crosses the finish line in 1999 and yells "I'm in Shock" as he wins his first Tour de France two years after almost dying from testicular cancer - Schmidty

The power category seems to be where the boxers shined the most for me. WHen I think of Raw power, I think of the Russian from Rocky IV (or was it Rocky III?) just demolishing Apollo Creed. I almost put Tyson for #1, but at the last minute my better senses got control over me.

Controversy
1 - USSR defeats USA for the Olympic Gold Medal in Basketball after officials give them three chances to inbound the ball at the end of the game - larrymcg421
2 - "The Tuck" - 2002 AFC Divisonal playoffs - Lathum
3 - Colorado Scores on 5th down to beat Missouri in 1990 - Radii
4 - Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal, Argentina vs England 1986 World Cup Quarter-Final - tanglewood
5 - Immaculate Reception December 23, 1972 Pittsburgh Steelers vs Oakland Raiders - bsak16
6 - Richard Steele stops the Julio Cesar Chavez-Meldrick Taylor fight with 2 seconds left in the 12th round, giving Chavez a TKO victory - sabotai
7 - "No mas! No Mas!" Roberto Duran quits in the midst of 8th round of his 2nd bout versus Sugar Ray Leonard - Schmidty
8 - Ben Johnson destroys the field in the 100-meter final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics - Maple Leafs
9 - George Brett Pine Tar incident - digamma
10 - The 2003 ALCS - Grady Little leaving Pedro Martinez in - Crapshoot

Not really one of the biggest controversial sports moments ever for me, it sure would win if a category had been called "Funniest foreign sports moments to imitate" To this day I still love calling out "No mas, no mas" if losing badly at a video game, sporting activity, cards, board game, or whatever.

So with all of the categories judged, I ended up with the following score sheet:

Lathum - 31
Sabotai - 38
Radii - 48
Bsak16 - 52.5
Larrymcg421 - 54
Digamma - 59.5
Maple Leafs - 60
Schmidty - 63
Tanglewood - 66
Crapshoot - 78
(points = bad)

I think those who ended up getting the most points at the end had more to say about myself than their choices. Unfortunatly I just don't know much about soccer, or international sporting events. I did enjoy reading everyone's draft picks and reasons, and in many cases learned alot that I didn't know about some sports.

I'll wait breathlessly for Sean's FOFC curling moments draft which I know is destined to come any day.

That's what you were saying when we use to kick your ass in NCAA football online. Now it all makes sense

Great breakdown Alan.
