What we knew about Iraq in 1943

Link to the US Army pamphlet called A Short Guide to Iraq published in 1943. Pretty neat reading, but it sort of makes you wonder how we could have known so little about the people 60 years later. Maybe that's the assumption that people reflect their government?

Interesting stuff.

My favorite line so far:

"If you should see grown men walking hand and hand, ignore it. They are not queer"

Ya, I love the casual tone of the writing. I guess that's a necessity when your drafting tens of thousands of 17-year olds from a variety of backgrounds.

I'd love to read these for other countries.
