The Story of the Marathon Monk
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19092915/
1,000 Double-Marathons. 1 per Day. Taking a rope and a sword with you, because if you're unable to finish your double-marathon for the day, you're supposed to kill yourself? Chant mantras for nine days without food, water or sleep? I can see why only 48 people in 122 years were able to complete the journey.

That's not an accurate description. It's only a total of 25,000 miles, with some 18-mile hikes, some 53-mile hikes, and other tests, with long stretches off. Not 1,000 double-marathons on 1,000 consecutive days.
Not that it makes the accomplishment any less stunning.
