What's the proper way to dispose of old license plates?

Can I just toss them in the trash, or is there some other way that I'm supposed to get rid of the things?

I would find an empty spot on one of those novelty license keychain displays in a convenience store and hang it there, between "Jim" and "John".

The previous owners of the house I used to own in Mississippi used a license plate to hide a hole in the main sewer line.

In MD, you're supposed to take them back to the motor vehicle admin/dept of motor vehicles.

No idea about TX, though, or for that matter, VA, which I may leave come September.

In CA, it is the same. My car got vandalized, we got the car cleaned up/fixed and then we get pulled over by the Highway Patrol because he couldnt see our license plate (due to the black spray paint). We explained what happened and he informed us to return the plates to the Calif. DMV.

Pretty sure you return them to the DMV.

Maybe you should have called them instead of asking a bunch of strangers on an internet message board.

I've been to hell, and I spell it -- spell it DMV. Everyone who's been there knows precisely what I mean.

Texas probably hands out the death penalty for not turning them in, like they do for jay walking, littering or tearing that tag off mattresses...

It seems like they when they handed me my new ones they would have told me if I had to return the old ones to them.

A preliminary Google search didn't really give me any info on Texas laws...

This is the right idea!

The other thing you can do is find a 1966 Chevy Blazer with a rusted out hole just under the gas pedal and weld that sucker there to cover the hole.

In New York they'll suspend your license if you don't return your plates in a timely.

Maybe I should ask on the Rockets board since there should be folks there who would know the specifics for Texas...

I look at about 5,000 license plate images everyday and some of the ones that made me laugh: a BMW with the license plate "HISMNY", a truck that has "COBOYS" (not sure if it was supposed to be Cowboys or what), a CA SUV with "POORMPG", and one that made me gag: "PRNNCSS".

About your license plate issue, dunno Jeebs. We still have our CA ones too.

Sharpen the leading edges, and fling it at evildoers real hard.

I think back to this one fondly every once in a while...

The most useful thing the guys on the Rockets board said was to hang them in the garage, so I guess in Texas there's no requirement to turn them in. Thank goodness, because they've been in my trunk for over a year now...

I've been carrying my TX plates around for something like two years now. State Farm didn't care about it when I switched my insurance, and I didn't think to inquire with the Texas DMV about it. Then again, I'm better off not knowing, as it would have been a PITA to return them (as I maintained my TX registration until after I had moved to IN), I probably would have wound up sending them through the mail.
