Cancelling/Moving Pre-Ordered Games

It seems to me that the obvious anwer to this question is yes...but are you able to cancel your paid-in-full pre-order at EB/Gamestop?

I pre-ordered Halo 3 and paid in full, but then a few months later I moved about 45 minutes away. Is it possible for me to get a full refund if I cancel, or move it to a closer store?

I don't think either is possible.

You can move the money to a different game, but not get a cash refund, and you can't move it to another store (I've looked into pre-ordering Eternal Sonata but am trying to move to WI).

I've got my gamestop manager to transfer my pre-order to another store before. However, this was a few years ago and they may have changed their policy. It certainly can't hurt to ask.

They may give you a gift card instead of cash.

How can they not give you cash back?

No goods = money back

Isn't that a law or something? I would be surprised if they didn't give you a full refund. When I pre-ordered NCAA and Madden, the clerk never said, "Are you sure? We do not give refunds if you don't want it later on."

Yea....it wouldn't make sense. I could at least understand if it they didn't give you cash a week, maybe two weeks before the game comes out, but two months???

I'll be going to ask them soon, hopefully they say yes.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting EBgames.com. You can return to the store and
ask for your reserve money back, and then make a new reserve at your
new
location. Another option would be to locate a store in the new area
beforehand, and request the current store to contact them and see if a
transfer is an option.

Best Regards,
William

Sweet!

Yep...make a scene if they try to refuse your $$$ back. They'll probably try to talk you into keeping the $$$ there, but they'll eventually give you your money back. It's all about selling reservations at Gamestop and cancelling one counts against the store's numbers.

Well, to be fair, and I'm not saying this is how it is, but there is a store's side to this, I think. The store presumably has to reserve an equal number of games from the game company as they have pre-orders for and I'm guessing they have to buy them beforehand. So, if you cancel it after they've already paid for it from the company, they're left holding the bag after you've already made a "contract" to pay for said pre-sold game that you paid ahead of time to guarantee a copy.

Again, I don't know how this works but I think that's a reasonable way to look at it.

Yeah, but I don't see anything in the store that reads, "Pre-ordering a game counts as a "verbal" contract and we reserve the right to keep your deposit or give you a gift card instead of cash."

I could see if they had you sign something or gave you a piece of paper with "pre-order" rules. It just wouldn't be worth the hassle of pissing people off. Plus it's different than special ordering a game, they are getting X amount of copies with or without pre-orders. Lets say they get 20 copies in and you are #19, with your pre-order they hold it for you instead of selling it.
