Supermarket tabloid Weekly World News calls it quits after 28 years

MIAMI (AP) -- A supermarket tabloid is calling it quits. Weekly World News is the tabloid that for 28 years has chronicled sightings of Elvis, extraterrestrial activity and the exploits of Bat Boy. Its publisher, American Media Incorporated, is based in Boca Raton and New York. It says it'll put out its last issue next month, maintaining only a Web presence. It called the closure necessary due to the challenges in the marketplace.

For all the headlines the tabloid has penned it has also made headlines of its own. In 2001's anthrax scare, A-M-I's office in Boca Raton was targeted and a photo editor was killed.

The August 27th issue will be Weekly World News' last.
